Get It Together (The Undead Detective Agency Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,065 ratings

Hello, there! I’m Octavius Evander. And this is the beginning of my story—well…sort of. It’s not the very beginning. As a vampire, that story would be way too long to write down—think, before the Romans. Rather, this story is about how I met the love of my unlife. Okay, it will be mostly about the cool and fancy detective agency I opened and solving mysteries, but also a little about love too.

So, what does one need to open a detective agency, you may ask? Well, for one, a detective. As it was my idea, and I paid for everything, I, of course, filled that role. Next, I needed a secretary. My beautiful and marginally dangerous best friend Scarlett filled that role. Now, I will admit, at that time, I had not thought further than that, and simply skipped to getting my detective license, an office, and some other necessities.

My mind might have been too full of the fun adventures I was about to have. My hope was that those in and out of the paranormal communities would keep me entertained for a very long time. I quickly realized I still needed a driver, a tech person, and a witch that was good with ghosts. This is the story of how I found those people. And who would have thought the first to walk through the door would be human, with no knowledge of the paranormal—my precious Turney.

I want to go read the second book now, but first I have to tell you that this one is fantastic. It's funny and sweet, a touch of mystery, lots of fun paranormal beings, and a bit of steam. This author is brand new to me, but I feel a binge session coming of all of her books. Happy reading!

At first I wasn't sure about Octavius, he seemed a little immature but he grew on me. Turney and he seem like they compliment each other well. I thought the way the agency was set up was super fun. The case of the disappearing house had me in suspense.

I feel like now that their team is set up it's going to keep the series fun and suspenseful.

I love that there was a lot of story and less on gratuitous on page sex that so many series have now. I want to be immersed in stories!!! Thus definitely fit the bill. On to the next one!

I live this series so far. I'm so curious to see how these two work out their relationship and if Turney some how will change his mind about being a vampire.

A cute read, but the MC and love interest don’t come off as likeable. While I enjoy a great paradox, there is way too much giggling/pouting/glitter, so you can’t take the bloodthirsty paranormal aspects seriously.

It was a whiplash-like experience to read about vampire crying over a sucker and then having a glitter-themed corpse-ridden scrapbook in the next scene.

I saw this book as something of a pilot episode to a series, with a fairly new director (author in this case) that was still finding their footing and I read it as such. I don't mean to be patronizing to the author, more to give context for the comments I have about the book that I see stemming more from a limited experience versus being a poor author. Because the story and the world both have potential! There are many things that I believe the author does very well, but there are also many bumps and foibles. I hope as the author continues to improve and address some of the things others have mentioned in the reviews, but for those who are about to read this book it will help you to enjoy it if you come with the expectations of it being a work by more of a disciple than a seasoned veteran. Also I think it warrants mentioning as a content warning that while the author does provide a warning for blood and violence it will likely be a higher level than you would expect given the otherwise lighthearted nature of the book. So to reiterate, there are graphic descriptions of gore and blood (which actually I think that author did a great job with as I was legitimately disturbed) that may catch you off guard. Just an additional warning because the story does take an abrupt turn into horrorville and it could be pretty disturbing for some.

    Criticism (and some minor spoilers)

As I said, my comments will not be original since many of them have been pointed out by other reviews. Overall the editing quality needs some work. Not just to fix grammatical and type mistakes, but also as a second voice to validate what works and tell you what does not work. What does not work for example: the author curiously chooses to frequently refer to characters as "the male". I initially gave them the benefit of the doubt that this choice would be relevant to the story or maybe somehow be a critique on how we separate ourselves and "other" certain groups. But there is no evidence that was the case, and this was rather just how the author writes. It isn't incorrect per se, but it is quite strange and makes the story read as if the speakers are third party documentarians observing what is happening very academically vs being part of the story.

While I believe most of the characters are the author's strong point, (although I did roll my eyes at the red-haired zombie being named Scarlett. A bit on the nose.) some of the aspects of the characters could use some polish though. I don't know if it is a limitation of the english language that we don't have enough words to describe laughter, but the main character Octavius giggles far more than is reasonable for an ancient vampire....or really any mature creature. Don't get me wrong, I think his silliness and humor is a selling point, however, the character seems to vacillate wildly between maturity and complete infantile immaturity too quickly. Overall it makes the character seem a bit unhinged which would be an interesting element for a creature so old, but I don't think this was the author's intention.

Also this was noted as being a slow burn romance, which I think is an inaccurate description at least by my assumptions of what "slow" means. If the intent is for this to be a series, and therefore covering a longer amount of in-story time, you would expect a slow burn romance to take place over a few books as the characters learn more about each other and grow in fondness overtime. This is not the case here. While sex, love, and romance, are not all the same, the main characters do hook up quite early in what presumably will be a longer story and there really isn't anything "slow" about it. On that subject, and this is not on the author alone but much of mlm romance authors, but many seem to be under the mistaken impression that someone in the relationship *must* be well-endowed for it to be worthwhile. Which frankly for written media is a little silly. It is a very very tired trope, we can do better.

    Praise

Like I said the characters are fun and I think a strong point of the author. Turney, the main human character, behaves *mostly* rationally given the circumstances and is a nice foil to Octavius. I do ding the author some points though for perhaps bringing in more characters in the first book than perhaps was achievable or necessary.

Also I found the world building of the paranormal to be quite intriguing. Yes some things that we've seen before if you read paranormal fiction, but also some interesting takes that come from the author (deliberately vague to avoid spoilers).

I generally want to praise the author for the idea. This story immediately got my attention and sounded like a lot fun. I hope they aren't discouraged by the reviews because I genuinely think this was an enjoyable book and I believe the author has the capacity to make improvements that come with writing more and taking criticism.

I loved Get It Together by Shelby Rhodes. It's the first book in The Undead Detective Agency series. I loved Octavius and how he decided to open a detective agency to indulge his hobby of being a detective. I loved how impulsive he is, like buying black copy paper that then requires a special printer that uses white ink so the words can be seen. I also loved watching him hire the rest of his employees. I especially loved Turney, the driver. I also had a good chuckle over who the IT specialist turned out to be. I also loved the illustrations throughout the book. Octavius in bat for is too adorable. Okay, I'm off to read the next book in the series.

A highly amusing start to what promises to be a very interesting series. What do you get when a bored ancient vampire decides to open shop? The Undead Detective Agency is the result advertising for a driver, a witch and an IT specialist to complement his zombie friend Secretary Octavius hires Tunney as the aforementioned driver and it doesn’t take long for their mutual attraction to blossom.
This first book sets the grounding for Shelby Rhodes ‘The Undead Detective Agency’ a series that walks the line between humorous paranormal fantasy and horror.
Looking forward to reading further in the series.
