Getting Published: How to hook an agent, get a deal & build a career you love (Jericho Writers Guide) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 162 ratings

Your complete guide to getting published in 2021. Includes absolutely everything you need to know about how to prepare your manuscript, get an agent, sign a contract, manage the publishing process - and market your work.

"This is a book written by someone who knows what he's talking about. Even better, it's written by someone who enjoys what he's writing about and it shows. It is simply and clearly written, with an underlying sense of fun throughout."-- Amazon reader review.

So: you’ve written a book and you want to get it published.

That means you need to know about getting your manuscript prepped for submissions. You need to know about
literary agents, and query letters, and synopses, and book proposals.

You need to know what happens if an agent comes back with an acceptance - and what happens if they say, ‘I liked it, but …’

You need to know about
agent contracts as well as publishing contracts. And you need to know about the market for books, because that’s the market which will determine your future as a writer.

But that’s not all. You need to know about
how to work with publishers though editing, design, marketing and publicity. What publishers want from those processes isn’t always the same as what YOU want and you have to know when to play nice and when to insist on changes. You have to understand what you can do to market your books effectively – and in a way that works for the person you are.

All of that in a publishing market that’s been changing faster than any time in history.

And look: you’re a reader as well and you don’t want a tedious textbook crammed with wholesome but indigestible facts. You want a book that feels like
a friendly, authoritative and humorous companion on your journey.

Finally, you want (and need) the
voice of experience. The voice of an author who has been much published himself – and someone who (as boss of Jericho Writers) has helped thousands of writers on their journey to publication.

On your side from start to finish, this book has been written for you - and with your goal of publication in mind. From one writer to another – good luck.

I'm Harry Bingham. I write crime novels and love it. When I'm not doing that, I'm heavily involved in Jericho Writers, a pretty amazing company that does all kinds of amazing things with writers.

I live in Oxfordshire, England, but I spent a lot of my childhood in Wales, where my crime novels are set. Things I love apart from writing: wild swimming, rock-climbing, walking, & dogs. I have an absurdly large number of kids and I love my life.

Finally! A how-to book on getting published that is a not a total waste of my time and money. If only I had acquired this one book before the thousands of dollars I spent on workshops, conferences, and useless publications, I'd by now be not only a happier writer but very probably a published one. I was so demoralized when I finally found Getting Published that only Harry Bingham's giftedness as an author (I've deeply enjoyed his Fiona Griffiths series) persuaded me to buy yet one more book - one that I was sure would follow the 20 others into the rubbish bin. I'm so glad that Harry proved me wrong! Practical, clear, well-organized guidance through the complexities of the publishing world: that is exactly what Getting Published offers. The fact that it is amusing and encouraging is an added benefit, not one to be under-estimated. So many authors are discouraged by 'the system', but Harry extends a helping hand; take hold and let him guide you to your publishing goal. Harry can't guarantee you'll be published, but if you read this book and follow his advice (and, if you can, sign on to Jericho Writers, Harry's super online tutorials) then at least you'll know you didn't fail because no one bothered to show you the right things to do.

Jericho Writers has another winner with this exhaustive look at the life of a published author. Anything you'd like to know about the writing business is covered in this book - and probably a great deal you didn't realize existed. From finishing your manuscript to writing a query letter; from finding an agent to your launch day; and from marketing your book to paying your taxes - everything's covered. Plus, Harry has a wicked sense of humor! Definitely recommend this for any author looking to publish.

Read this publilcation in detail - if you already have mastered the craft of writing a great book, that is! This is basically a book on the business of writing. The writer is highly experienced, convincing, and knows how to keep the reader involved and engaged. He also has a certain integrity or honesty, and the details provided on how to avoid scams and other shortcomings are very useful, even though dispersed through different parts of the book. (A separate chapter devoted to scams would be useful.)

This book is a great resource for how to present a completed manuscript to agents and publishers, including how to write a synopsis and query letter, and how to navigate the entire complex publication process, including the contract and advertising, written with gusto by someone who has the skills to pull through even the shiest and most incompetent at public relations, or at how to sell oneself.

The downside of this book is that it is not for someone who is struggling with writer's block, or who may have a great plot but difficulty on how to craft a narrator. Someone in that position would be overwhelmed by the details and, frankly, by the author's enthusiasm, and would be best advised to search for a book that teaches stictly the art of writing. And the author does admit as much when he states the great wisdom, several times, that the reason most books don't get published is because they just are not good enough.

This is an extremely informative book written in a lively and entertaining way. However, I think after you read it, you’ll decide to skip the traditional publishing route and go with self-pub.

My first comment having just finished reading this book is that it is fun to read. Fun in a book about publishing and all the gloom and doom as well as the occasional exciting and amazing moments, is good!
My second comment is that it is very helpful, even for a writer who has already been studying this whole publishing lark for years and years.
My third comment is that it tells the truth, even though the truth is not always what a writer wants to hear.
My fourth comment is that it makes a writer feel better about all the downs they may have had and may well still get, because it makes it clear that we writers are not alone, everyone else has had the same damn issues, and almost all of us can still learn from books like this, and especially this book on how to do it better from now on.
My fifth comment is that Harry Bingham knows what he is talking about because he is probably the top guy in the UK on all the complex topics around publishing. He has been there himself and he was the instigator of Jericho Writers, an amazingly helpful and friendly and down-to-earth association for writers from anywhere. They are BIG now and have lots of people working for and with them, including outstanding editors, to help writers write, then revise, then publish and market their books, whether it be traditionally or via the self-publishing route. And they are not the least bit snobbish or precious, and believe that with dedication, a lot of hard work, and some luck, you can write a good book and make some money as well, without compromising your values, your self-esteem, or your ability to eat.
My last comment is that if you are a writer who wants readers, this book is a good investment, and a very cheap one! Although it may be primarily written from the perspective of the UK market, having published in the US market, I think it is useful here as well. The publishing process in the UK and US have more in common than not.
This is a totally honest review written after I read an Advanced Reader Copy of the book. If you buy it and read it, one excellent thing you can do is review it as well! Writers need to be kind and helpful to their fellow writers as it turns out that the writer community is the best part of the whole author/writer thing.

I love Harry Bingham's style of writing - he tells it like it is but always with humour.
There is so much helpful information in this book. The best bit for me personally was not only how to get an agent but also what to do when you get one!
I must confess that reading this book is an eye-opener for me. As an (unpublished as yet) author, I had no real concept of how the publishing world works and the obstacles an author might face (and it seems there are many).
This is a book I shall be re-reading as I journey along the pitted path to publication. (I live in hope!)
    Thank you Harry.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant tips and an enjoyable read - worth the money and time to read

Enjoyable read (written with a dry wit) with generous insights and tips on how to get published by traditional publishing houses. A read of this book will assist authors negotiate the wild ride of traditional publishing, while warning of the terrors that may lurk on the journey. Also asks insightful questions as to the 'why' behind the 'do'. Thoroughly enjoyed the humour, and the self deprecating yet honest and transparent promotion of other services available through the author's 'other' business - Jerichco Writers (which y the way is a generous hearted and transparent organisation that really does assist authors with all sorts of struggles and challenges.

Definitely worth the time to read.

I found the information useful as a good all-rounder in the path to getting and I think, more particularly, being a published author. Perhaps a few literary examples used would be considered a little out of date now. It's good stuff, but more 'large picture' publishing sensibility, than let's get down to the nitty-gritty of a stellar manuscript submission package which is what i was hoping for.

I saw the previous version of this book, and had it in my wish list for a long time. When I wanted to buy it I was confused as to why it was unavailable, but I guess I know why now. If you are looking to become traditionally published, this book features a lot of useful information to help you on your way. I'm still undecided on whether I want to take the traditional or indie route, but I am glad that I've picked this up so I bit more understanding of the publishing world.
