Narrator Nicol Zanzarella clearly gives voice to Aubrey Ellis, a medium. Through Zanzarella’s soft tones and inflections, one comes not only to know the character but also to feel her emotions, positive and negative, as one is drawn into Aubrey’s world. With fellow reporter Levi St. John, Aubrey delves into both her ghostly gifts and the murder of young woman in her New England town of Surrey. Characters are easily identifiable by their varying vocal styles. The author clearly identifies the setting and strongly indicates place, as well. However, those familiar with New England may find Zanzarella’s accent inauthentic to the point of distraction. For those outside of New England, her accent most likely will go unnoticed.
