Gift Horse Kindle Edition
Caroline Walker’s daughter suffers a horrific riding accident. Her distraught parents wonder if she’ll ever walk again, let alone ride. And when Mollie’s blood group is discovered as rare, her husband offers to donate blood. Except Ian is not a match. In fact, it’s unlikely he’s Mollie's father. Eighteen years previously, Caroline had a one-night stand with Irish rock star, Rory O’Connor. Caroline fell pregnant. Deeply flawed boyfriend, Ian, was overjoyed. And Caroline’s parents were simply grateful that their daughter was to marry into the rich, influential Walker family. Never look a gift horse in the mouth. Caroline turns to Rory’s friend Connor; and although his almost spiritual connection with his horses appears to be the balm she needs, Caroline cannot forget Rory, or her youth – both lost to a man she never loved. Eighteen years on and after surviving cancer Rory lives as a virtual recluse in the Welsh mountains. Through his well-meaning but interfering sister, he is shocked to discover he has a teenage daughter. Or does he?
As the truth begins to unravel, Caroline finds herself faced with a complex trail of moral dilemma. Someone has made a terrible mistake… someone is going to get hurt…

From the Author
Some years ago we moved from Cheshire to North Wales. Although Cheshire has its history and pretty rural surroundings aplenty, Wales is far more extreme in both aspects. The castles and the rugged hillsides scattered with stone settlements, Druid's circles and Roman roads bring out the historical muse in me. To think that I am treading the same path as someone who lived in the Iron Age, is both fascinating and humbling. Snowdonia kick-started my stalled obsession with writing in a very positive way.
All this whimsical talk of the past makes me sound as if I write historical based fiction. Far from it. Much as I admire many other genres I tend to be very much rooted in current times and my work reflects a lot of my own life experiences. But this is where I find the two ideas merge a little because I am most certainly inspired by this Ice Age landscape and the idea that what has gone before, shapes what we see today, but does it shape what we feel, too?
I write contemporary fiction set in North Wales. It falls very loosely into the romantic genre but it isn't hearts and flowers fiction. You may find the odd spot of arson, adultery and manslaughter laced with black humour and of course, the big landscapes of Snowdonia.

About the author

Jan Ruth lives a mountainous area of North Wales, UK. Jan writes contemporary fiction about the darker side of the family dynamic, often blending life in rural Wales with a touch of city business. Her style is best described as fast-paced and realistic, with a sprinkling of dry humour.
The real story began at school, with prizes for short stories and poetry. She failed all things mathematical and scientific, and to this day struggles to make sense of anything numerical.
Her first novel – written in 1986 – attracted the attention of editor Anne Dewe, Andrew Mann Literary Agency, London. Dewe’s own company, Love Stories Ltd, was a project aiming to champion those books of substance which contained a romantic element but were perhaps directed towards the more mature reader and consistently fell through the net in traditional publishing. Summer in October was contracted immediately but sadly, the project failed to get the right financial backing and the company dissolved.
Many years later Jan’s second novel, Wild Water, was taken on by Jane C Judd Literary Agency, London. Despite Judd’s enthusiasm, the book failed to find the right niche with a publisher – one brave enough to expand on those established, traditional genre stereotypes. And then Amazon changed the face of the industry with the advent of self-publishing and Jan went on to successfully publish several works of fiction under her own imprint, Celtic Connections. After a brief partnership with Accent Press in 2015, Jan chose to return to the freedom of independent publishing.
Wild Water won the Cornerstones competition for the most popular self-published book in 2011, and Midnight Sky won the Romantic Review Magazine Award (2013). Silver Rain (2015) and Wild Water (2016) were both finalists in the Wishing Shelf Awards. Jan’s books are available globally via Amazon as ebooks or paperbacks and locally, you’ll find them in North Wales libraries.
When she’s not reading or writing – Jan loves walk or ride the Welsh hills; a constant source of inspiration.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2019When I started this book, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it. I found myself irritated with the young Caroline and Ian story, and wondered where it was going and even if I wanted to finish it. However, as it moved on, it really gripped me. It developed into the real in-depth family relationship novel that Jan Ruth is supremely good at. Set between England and north Wales, the sense of place is strong and of course, there are always dogs and horses involved, which gets me every time. The story line is real; the family situations resulting from spilled secrets are devastating; and Ms Ruth writes with so much empathy for the dilemmas that result that I felt Caroline’s anguish every step of the way. In my opinion Jan Ruth is one of the best writers about relationships there is. Her characters are so real it is easy to recognise them in people we know or even in ourselves. She is particularly good at sulky teenagers. In the end I became totally absorbed in the book and ended up loving it! Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2019Once again, Jan Ruth blows me away. I needed this, reading it on the heels of a lackluster double romance. I'm always looking for emotion and grit along with entertainment, and this author never fails me.
Caroline slips up at the tender age of 19, no different than most at that age who are still growing up and learning about life. But mistakes have consequences, though so do safe choices. Her problems mount and things go from bad to worse.
There are certainly some surprises here, and I love a story that keeps me guessing. There's so much realism involved, and morality is at times a bit hazy. There's never a clear cut answer as to who's good and who's bad or who's right and who's wrong- just like life.
Wow! I hope this author continues to write or I'll have to keep rereading her old stuff!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2019I keep hoping for more emphasis on horses but though there were no glaring horse-related errors, this was more drama than horse. I had trouble relating to any of the characters and found the very numerous flash-backs overdone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great story, well told.
I wasn’t sure about this book when I started reading it, but persevered as I am a fan of the author.
I’m so glad I stayed with it...to the point where I could hardly put it down.
The characters are so well drawn, some you love, some you loathe, some you’d like to give a good talking too, but all real.
As usual for this author, the settings of the story are characters too. I am very familiar with the areas described and so much loving attention has gone into the detailed descriptions of them.
Reading the storyline itself was like riding a rollercoaster of emotions, and I couldn’t wait to get to the end, but didn’t want to finish it either.
All in all, a wonderful read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gift of a read
This was such an enjoyable read. I was already a fan of Jan Ruth so my expectations were high - and they were more than met.
The plot was clever, convincing and unpredictable. The ending was particularly well done. And the characters were brilliant – complex, engaging and all too human. I was hooked from the start – and keen to know how the dilemmas and questions would play out. The love story element was subtly done which made it all the more beguiling.
This is a real binge read of a book – a great one to curl up with on winter's afternoon and to keep reading well past bedtime.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book! A great read.
I have always enjoyed Jan Ruth's books and this one was no exception. She has a talent for creating memorable characters, a lovely setting and a great storyline. Gift Horse has a lovely Welsh setting, and lots of conflict including an horrific riding accident and an unhappy marriage. And some gorgeous Irishmen! I really loved this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read but...
This is the first fictional work of Jan Ruth’s that I’ve read. It is not as beautifully written as her autobiographical book but it is well written. It is not the author’s fault that I could not get to grips with any of the characters nor the storyline. I would still recommend it as a good read.
