A Gift of Time Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 157 ratings

Be careful what you wish for... it just might come true. Jack Taylor learns this the hard way. He's a workaholic who wants that highly sought after corner office at the advertising agency he works for, and he'll do anything to get it—even if that means constantly disappointing his fiance, Caden.

On his way home one Christmas Eve night, he's dreading the argument he knows will happen once he walks through the door. To make matters worse, he forgot to get a gift for Caden, so he makes a quick stop at a Christmas shop he's never seen before. Inside, he meets a mysterious man who sells him an antique clock. When he gets home, he and Caden fight, just as he expected, and he ends up sleeping on the couch.

Fuming from their fight, Jack makes a wish to have never met Caden. And it comes true.

Waking up in an alternate reality around Christmas, Jack has everything he's ever wanted: the perfect job, fancy car, and luxurious apartment. But he soon realizes it means nothing without the man he loves.
There's only one way to reverse the wish: get Caden to fall in love with him before Christmas Eve... or lose him forever.

I came across a recommendation for this book in a reading group and I’m so glad I downloaded it to read. Such a beautiful and loving story about a man who learns to appreciate all that true love can bring. Jack and Caden’s story of love lost and found again really touched my heart and kept a smile on my face. I literally read this in one sitting and will definitely read it again.

Jaclyn does such a wonderful job capturing the essence and magic that comes this time of year. Jack becomes consumed with a goal and material things leading him to become more and more unhappy with his current situation including his fiancee Caden. After a foolish wish right before falling asleep he wakes up with everything materialistic he's ever wanted, and no Caden.

This story takes us on Jack's discovery of his selfishness to selflessness with all the gritty, self loathing, and steamy sex in between.

If you’re struggling to get into the spirit Jaclyn Osborn’s Christmas novella 'A Gift of Time' will tug at your heart in all the right places warming your soul and leave you yearning to believe.

Thirty-year old Jack Taylor’s devotion to making a name for himself by climbing the corporate ladder for the past seven years has taken a toll on his relationship with his fiancé, Caden. Adding insult to injury he comes home late again on Christmas Eve with a last minute gift for their heartfelt exchange. But after a terrible fight with hurtful words that can’t be taken back, and one terrible wish uttered from Jack, “’I wish I’d never met him,’” he’s about to discover wishes may in fact come true.

As the gift shop owner says, “’Sometimes a man needs to be given exactly what he asked for in order for him to realize that what he really needed was what he had all along.’”

'A Gift of Time' is a love story within a love story as Jack wakes up to the “perfect life” and the more his deepest desires keep coming true he soon realizes they mean nothing without the greatest gift of all – love. But it may be too late.

What lengths would you go to make your partner fall in love with you again…What would you give up?

The build-up for Jack to get what his heart truly desires literally makes you ache and you can’t wait for “that moment”, “those words”. But Osborn puts you through the ringer first from fear to hope, desire to rejection and defeat to acceptance.

Jack’s wish truly ends up being a “gift of time” allowing him to savor precious memories from a whole new perspective and bestowing on him the ability to see his love for Caden in an entirely new light. Osborn creatively uses the traditions of the holiday season, from decorating the tree to family recipes and Christmas Eve gift exchanges, to showcase customs aren’t merely something we do every year, but a treasure we cherish within our hearts of those we hold dear.

A tale of redemption reminiscent of 'A Christmas Carol' mixed with 'It’s a Wonderful Life', 'A Gift of Time' literally caused a lump in my throat and had me weeping in sorrow and joy right to the very end, reminding me to treasure what’s right before me. And hopeful a charming side character named Logan may get his own little gift…maybe a New Year’s proposal?

If possible, I'd give this book a 3.5 because this light read would be a good TV movie. Recognizing that, I shouldn't be disappointed but I am. Don't get me wrong, I like books wherein a character gets to experience the road not taken and learns to value and treasure what he already has. But for me, there was something missing, like a dish that needs more seasoning. Maybe some witty dialogue and a little of Caden's POV would have done the trick. But hey, it's good as what it is, an m/m Hallmark Christmas movie.

I really liked this retelling of the "It's a Wonderful Life" story. I liked that Jack had to really work to get Cayden to fall in love with him again. Jack realized his life would be bleak without all the 'boring and mundane' things that Cayden brings to their home. Lovely story.

If this was a movie I think I would have hated it for being way too sweet and predictable. But as it is I loved it. I even cried a little. At first I hated Jack and his attitude and I couldn't quite see how the author would manage to change him into a likeable character you would want Caden to be with. But well, she managed just fine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Christmassy Do-over/Second Chances story.....
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 23, 2017
3.5 stars rounded up from me. A Christmassy do-over/second chance story, with Jack being a selfish, driven workaholic who is never satisfied with what he's got, and kind of a moron to be honest, and Caden who just has to put up with Jack's grumpy moods and selfish behaviour. I've never seen it [or read any of the books it has to be said], but I would guess this is all loosely based [very loosely based] on 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' with Caden being Cindy Lou's character....maybe??

One Christmas Eve, Jack is leaving the office late as usual, without having even bought Caden a present [and considering they were engaged and supposedly getting married, this part infuriated me]. All the other shops are closed, and he spies a hut in the distance selling presents for discerning customers. The owner [and I suspect this was Santa himself] gives Jack a little telling off and points him in the direct of a beautiful clock, which Jack knows that Caden will love but which also comes with a warning.....

Yes, it's all very familiar and has no doubt been done a hundred times before, but I got invested in the characters and wanted to get my HEA. Enjoy!!
