God's Maidservant: The story of Adelaide of Italy (Women of the Dark Ages) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 256 ratings

How do you escape the shadow of the perfect wife?

"I am queen merely in name, just as Lothair is king merely in name. He does nothing to challenge this."

The daughter of the King of Burgundy, Adelheid’s destiny was decided at the age of two. She will marry the son of her father’s rival, the King of Italy, taking her place one day as its queen.

As Adelheid grows up, she dreads her impending marriage, longing instead for a life of contemplation and devotion in an abbey. But aware it is her duty, she and King Lothair of Italy are wed.

The marriage is as unhappy as it is brief, their lives dominated by Berengar, the true ruler of Italy and his vicious wife, Willa. When Lothair meets a brutal end, Adelheid hopes she can at last take up the religious life she has always dreamed of.

But tenth-century Italy proves to be a treacherous land for the beautiful young queen. Berengar, now the King of Italy, is jealous of Adelheid’s popularity. He plots to marry her to his own son, the odious Adalbert and he will not take no for an answer.

Only one man can help her - Otto, the King of Germany and the most powerful man in Christendom. But Otto’s help will come at a price. A widower, whose heart lies in the grave with his beloved wife, he demands Adelheid’s lands and her beauty for his own…

Anna was born in Essex in 1974. She loved reading from an early age, enjoying books such as the Chronicles of Narnia and Watership Down. She discovered historical fiction in her teens and this soon became a favourite genre, with 'Katherine' by Anya Seton one of her most read books.

After a completing a degree in history, Anna lived in Germany for a year before training as a teacher. She currently lives in Devon with her husband and three sons.

Anna has always enjoyed writing and has experimented over the years with various genres including thrillers, children's and science fiction. In 2015 she started work on a book inspired by her love of history and her Scots ancestry. The result was 'Kenneth's Queen', a tale of the nameless wife of Kenneth mac Alpin, his rise to power and the birth of Scotland.

Anna has fallen in love with the medieval era and particularly the lesser known people and events. She plans to tell the story of as many as possible!

Finally found an author who writes what my heart longs to feel…in the setting of historical fiction, I appreciate the “education” of ACTUAL history in such a pleasant manner, and the discretion of her portrayal of intimate/romantic scenarios. Although I would like a little more HUMOR integrated through the sorrowful times, I found myself tearing up a couple of times along with the characters wearing, because of how she painted the characters with such “aliveness.” I couldn’t help to be drawn in! And, I LOVE that she focuses on the women, since that perspective is what I enjoy. Finally, I love a Happy Ending!

This book helped me understand some of the intricacies of the German rule. I didn't know that there had been an Emperor Otro, for instance. O wish she kept going, but that's life.

What a fascinating story. This is the first book I have read about the dark ages I think. It will not be the last!

Women's lives were not their own back then--Men ruled--women had to scheme and hope for the best. Adelheid only wanted to live in an abbey--but it was not to be. She made many mistakes along the way until she learned how to trust and be a "good" wife.

You really don't hear or read too much about the woman back in the dark ages--they were non entities. I am happy to see that Anna Chant is going to try to bring as many to our attention as she can! Their stories should be told.

This is almost a continuation of the Saxon marriage book as it is about Adelaide who becomes King Otto's second wife. Coming back to Otto's family again felt like coming home. The book was amazing which didn't come as a surprise to me but what did was I found that I didn't like Adelaide. Certainly not the fault of the author but first time that has happened with her books. Excellent and recommended read.

I truly enjoyed the characters in this book. Very little is known about these women, and so it's completely fair to take some literary liberties. I did find the continual misuse of the word "born" for "borne" to be annoying. Oh, and it's not the "Crown of the Lombard's."

The dark ages is not an easy period to write about, many facts and details are lost in the mists of time. Anna Chant paints a fascinating portrait of a queen, wife, mother and empress. She brings to life a time when royal women were married to form alliences rather than for love. Adelheid is an interesting character and the writer describes here as the complex character she must have been. Good read for history fans.
