Good Liniment (The Hat Book 5) Kindle Edition
A religious zealot might be a monster, but is still a human being. This task isn't the same as staking vampires or shooting zombies. It isn't the usual project Lizzie takes on for her night work.
This all takes place during a recovery period for Lizzie. She needs to keep her cover band together and find a new way of getting them gigs. More bands and less venues are making finances tight. The hat didn't make things easier during her absence, by spreading rumors about why she took her sabbatical.
Someone killing others over a point of view insults Lizzie's sensibilities. She has secrets to keep. Her employers have secrets, too. It doesn't make for a comfortable working environment, but she agrees to do what she can.
Convincing her strong willed employers to stay indoors during all this poses another problem. Can she keep them alive long enough to finish her task?
Good Liniment is full of magic, magical creatures, and an entire underground community living amongst us.
The Hat Series consists of short novels that can be read in a single afternoon. They're full of snarky, dark humor and can be easily read out of order.

About the author

I was born in a town called Elko, Nevada. I like to tell everyone I was born in a small town in the 1940s. I'm not quite that old, but Elko has always been a little behind the times. This gives me a unique perspective of earlier times, and other ways of getting by. Some of this bleeds through into my fiction.
I moved to Idaho right after the turn of the century, and never looked back. My writing career was born here, with access to other writers and critique groups I jumped in with both feet.
I like to write about things that have something unusual. My works are in the realm of science fiction, paranormal, and fantasy. The goal is to entertain you for a few hours. I hope you enjoy the ride.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2022“Good Liniment” brings back all my favorite characters, especially the hat. Lizzie went home to regroup, so the hat made his way to her in an interesting way. When their issues are resolved, it’s time to bring the band back together. During this, Lizzie gets a case where she needs to find out why someone wants the witches in a coven killed. I always enjoy the humor and depth of the world created, including the radio show Night Bump. It’s nice when individuals from other books pay a visit too. This can be a standalone read, but having been there from the start it sure added more complexity to the story. Another great addition to the Hat Series, and I can’t wait for more.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2022Lizzie and the hat – they’re among my favorite characters this author has created, so I always look forward to accompanying them on their supernatural adventures. This time someone is murdering witches.
The end of the last book saw Lizzie needing to get away for a while, and she’s now staying with her parents. But the hat isn’t with her. How he makes his way to her is both amusing and creative. It also gives Kevin the vampire an opportunity to make an appearance, and any time he shows up chuckles are guaranteed. Officer Joe Yoder also makes a welcome appearance. A new character, Noodles, easily made my list of favorites. He’s not exactly your typical pet, and it’s hard to describe exactly what he is – you’ll just have to read the book and discover for yourself.
During Lizzie’s absence the band had to take on other jobs to pay the bills. The hat had to come up with a reason for her time away – which isn’t true, but to her credit she goes with the flow. During the course of their investigation, Lizzie experiences something that had me on edge for several pages – I was worried, folks. But no spoilers here. They’ve hunted all sorts of supernatural creatures in the past, but this time is different – their target is human.
As with all the books in this series, the banter between Lizzie and the hat is amusing and snarky. Sometimes they’re like an old married couple. If you’re looking for an entertaining, quick read, paranormal mysteries, and quirky characters (human and supernatural alike) that stick with you long after reading, add this series to your list. The books work fine as standalones, but starting from the beginning allows a broader understanding of this world and its characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2023This is my favourite The Hat book so far. Lizzie is at home with her parents recovering from a mental breakdown following an unexpected death. The Hat has to perform some interesting antics to keep things going at the flat he shares with her during this absence, and also to get to Lizzie's parents house and persuade her to come home. I enjoyed this unexpected introduction.
Lizzie is requested to meet with a coven of local witches following the murder of one of their members. Lizzie knows the dead member and is determined to help. She learns about the witches meeting place, a local pub and restaurant called Good Liniment, and gets to meet several new witches, all of whom are interesting and have their own quirks.
My favourite of the witches was the young Dash, a sixteen year old trainee witch who has recently been taken under the wing of the highly accomplished Cyrus.
This novella retains the dark humour of the other Hat books, but I found it's subject matter to be scarier. Some of the events, and the reasons these events occur, reached deeper into the blackness of some peoples hearts, especially people who have fanatical beliefs. This aspect of the book was most relatable given the current state of the world.
A most enjoyable and entertaining read.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2022Another good entry into The Hat series, Good Liniment has Lizzie and the hat coming to the aid of a coven of witches… more precisely, they’re hired to find a killer who murdered one of the coven and is looking to up the score.
The first order of business is getting Lizzie and the Hat together again, given the way the previous novella ended. Boyack does that quickly and efficiently, while providing a glimpse into Lizzie’s family background. There are also several new characters, most of the supernatural variety.
My favorite is “Noodles” a quasi pet-like creature belonging to Cyrus Yoder, a witch and key player in this story. As usual, Boyack’s imagination runs wild with the variety of witches he dreams up, and an amusing foray to a comic con.
There’s plenty of adventure, cameos from past characters (Kevin the vampire, Joe Yoder the cop, and a surprise guest). More music from Lizzie and the Pythons, snark from the Hat, sightings of Hellpox, and a personal favorite of mine—forays into Night Bump Radio. But there are also tense moments, and a hard hit for Lizzie (you’ll have to read the book to discover what that’s all about).
These novellas are written to be read as standalones, but it does help to have some glimmer of the Hat universe going into this one, if only the previous entry. A fun and imaginative tale with a universe that just keeps growing!
