- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2018Kate finally has a job at the aquarium, it’s not ideal but she’s using it to get where she wants, her fiancé, Simon, still gives her tingle, so everything is where she wants it. Kate wonders how she’s going to go as she won’t know anyone there and doesn’t make friends easily.
Lincoln knows his boss Arthur Cowan and Kate’s father, Harold Fletcher, have been at war, in between times of truces but that all stopped when Arthur’s son ended up in their crossfire, now Arthur wanted Harold’s child hurt.
Kate never expected to be attacked, or wake up to find her fiancé, was in fact a hired killer that lets her know things, that make her question what she’s been told her whole life. Wondering if anything they had before was real, Lincoln lets her know he doesn’t know.
He knows what is at risk, he’s taking on two of the biggest name in crime in Europe. He wants to tell Kate that she’s precious and he’ll keep her safe, when she looks so hurt and crushed, but he doesn’t know if he will choose her if it destroys his goal. He had no problem getting Kate to fall in love with him, but now she knows who he is he has no idea how to get her to trust him.
The twist and turns that follow leave them fighting for their lives.
Kate knows she loved Simon, but can she trust Lincoln after the way he betrayed her even when her life depends on it. Lincoln has never trusted anyone, never believed in love, but for Kate is he willing to try.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2018I haven't read Romantic Suspense in a long while so I was looking forward to starting Goodbye Kate. It was also my first book by Nicola Haken - she is well known for her MM Romance which are very popular.
Kate's rude wake-up from being a gullible young woman to being part of a mafia family she didn't know she she belonged to, has her growing up fast. I saw some reviews mention that she was so naive but I actually thought that her growth was believable with all she experienced and endured. Not only did she have to come to terms with the knowledge that her father was a mobster but also grieve her fiance who she'd loved deeply. Kate was pretty resilient and I could see why Lincoln loved her.
Lincoln was a little harder to fall in love with but I fell deeper when he started to actually let himself feel. Up to that moment he was a cold bastard but when he realized what a remarkable, strong woman Kate had become he was completely devoted to her.
The plot has a lot of twists, some of which I could guess but some where whiplash inducing...I definitely didn't see the twist with Kate's fiance. That one gripped me and had me reading on giddily. As much as I enjoyed the storyline I thought there were some parts that were a little slow. Both Kate and Lincoln spent a lot of time inside their heads. While some of those inner monologues helped me to understand the characters better others made the story feel a little dragged out.
I'm pleased that I got to read GOODBYE, KATE. Nicola Haken definitely made it on my "authors to watch for" list and I will pick up one of her MM books to see how they compare. She certainly has a beautiful writing voice. As for this story, it is a wild ride with some lulls in between that has a little bit of everything: suspense, romance, mobsters and some sort of a second-chance romance trope. If any of this appeals to you give this author a shot!

Goodbye, Kate by Nicola Haken is the story of two worlds colliding, the right side of the law and the underground where the criminals rule. Knowing this book was dark and contained monsters totally caught my attention and I was so eager to get to reading. This was also another story where the author was new to me so I was perfectly content to go in not knowing what to expect. Sadly though Goodbye, Kate quickly became not for me and many times lost my interest in the process.
I will keep this review short so as not to seem I'm bringing down the story. That in itself did have much potential but too many times it stalled out where not much was happening. This is written in dual POV but focused more on Kate, who didn't know anything, so a lot of action was missed because of not staying on Lincoln. He was also the only character I really liked and respected how much he grew throughout. Kate to me was just a naive person and felt no connection to her. The last few chapters did keep me intrigued and is what saved the story, I just wish more of that was written throughout. I don't consider Goodbye, Kate dark or disturbing really, it's an interesting storyline that I see others enjoying very much, unfortunately though not me.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2018I'm not really much of an MF reader these days. I turned an MM corner a few years back and for the most part, I stayed there. Every once in awhile, I'll venture out and gander a read. In this case I did so because I've really enjoyed Nicola's MM books. Imagine my surprise when this turned out to be my favorite Nicola read thus far!
I loved Lincoln and Kate and their story, with all its twists and turns. A combination of action-adventure, suspense, and romance, this book was a nail-biter. I started off having read the blurb and waiting to see what would happen. Smooth sailing and then just like that, it became an instant page-turner. And the best thing about it? Though coddled in many ways, Kate was so NOT a damsel in distress (my biggest MF pet peeve). She stepped up, owned her situation, and kicked ass. She went from victim to heroine, and I loved her for it.
Once that happened, well, let's just add sexiness and heat to the mix, and I was won the rest of the way over. She and Lincoln just about set my kindle on fire with their heat, but they also kept me on my toes with the intrigue. I really didn't know what would happen next between them or in the world around them.
Full of drama, angst, emotion, and tons of action, this book and its MCs are unforgettable, as is its author. Big kudos to Nicola Haken, who is now part of the very short list of auto-buys for me in the MF book world.

5.0 out of 5 stars MUST READ
Goodbye, Kate is the first of Nicola Haken's books that I've read. And I have to say it absolutely captured my imagination.
Without wanting to give the plot away, let me just say...this lady is the mistress of red herrings...certain things seem so cut and dried, but they weren't. Plots had twists and the twists had further twists!
Kate and Lincoln are great characters, the plot is excellent and the book is very well written.

A very nicely written story. Turns out this author writes MF just as well as she writes MM. The romance aspect of the storyline did feel a little cliché at times but I guess there's only so many ways a story of this kind can go. But that won't take away from your enjoyment of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I loved this book. It kept me gripped from the beginning and I couldn’t wait to see where it ended. And boy did it take you on a rollercoaster ride of twists to get there. It kept me guessing. It kept me on the edge of my seat. It was brilliant.
