- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was an intense story about a boy, his village and the witch. The main character Charles spends his whole life being terrified of the Fen Witch and the evil deeds that she had done in his village. Any and all bad things that happened were attributed to the witch and Charles believes in her entirely, especially once he has a face to face encounter.
Not only does that scar him for life but his homo-hating father lashes out and his kids and Charles’ mentor Mick the barber every opportunity he gets.
Now, years later Mick goes missing Charles returns to the village for an ultimate throw-down with his father, missing mother and of course, the witch.
The story is really entwined and has good characterization. I enjoyed reading this story and the mystery that unfolded.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe Fen Witch of Goosefeather Split has haunted Charlie's dreams ever since he watched her rise from the marsh. When his dear friend and mentor goes missing, Charlie must confront his past and his fears to uncover an evil deeper than he ever imagined.
This was a great story. As much as the horror, I loved reading about Charlie and Mick's history. I felt very invested in the characters and their relationships. Well done!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBenjamin Langley is at it again. This work is both chilling and melancholy, dealing with trauma and a haunted past. It's a short, very personal story that'll leave you breathless.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2021Format: KindleJust finished reading Benjamin Langley's new novella, THE FEN WITCH OF GOOSEFEATHER SPLIT. This quick read features a quietly lurking terror from an equally quiet, seemingly harmless, sleepy-town & proves that, often, the source of evil is almost as scary as the monster itself. 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sinister and Atmospheric Tale
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIn The Fen Witch of Goosefeather Split Benjamin Langley takes us back once more to the East Anglian fens, whose vile foggy, noxious, malodorous, atmospheric ‘mush-scape’ he describes better than any other writer I know of, (though secretly he obviously loves it!). But the sinisterness of the natural surroundings is nothing compared to the evil of some of the inhabitants. This is the story of how Charlie, the protagonist, learns to stop running away from his fear of the past, of the fens and the secrets it holds, and to confront the truth about the death of his mother and his best friend. A gripping and beautifully told tale.

5.0 out of 5 stars gripping and scary!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseVery easy to get into and love (and hate!) the characters in the story. I grimaced a lot, mage “urgh” noises aloud and cupped my mouth, and swallowed back a tear or two. I also chuckled at times and reminisced about the Prodigy. I read it in one session/day. Thoroughly enjoyed this! Ben is a fab writer!

5.0 out of 5 stars Visceral Horror Done Well
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI'll be honest, I don't read as much horror fiction as I used to but this novella is just the thing that could draw me back in again. This is a tale with a visceral, claustrophobic feel to it. I will certainly be following this read with more from Benjamin Langley - on this showing he is a talent to watch

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA gripping story of a necessary return to a small village full of painful memories, shot through with grim & muddy English folklore made real. Incredibly tense & effective.
