Joanne Larner was born in London and moved to Rayleigh in Essex (UK) in 2001. She has wanted to write a novel since the age of thirteen and finally managed it in 2015. She was helped by two things: National Novel Writing Month and Richard III. Richard was her inspiration and she became fascinated by him when she saw the Channel 4 documentary 'The King in the Car Park' in February 2013. She researched his life and times and read countless novels, but became fed up because they all ended the same way - with his death at the Battle of Bosworth.
So she decided to write a different type of Richard story and added a time travel element. The rest is (literally) history. She found his character seemed to write itself and with NaNoWriMo giving her the impetus to actually DO it, she succeeded.
Then came two sequels, making 'Richard Liveth Yet' a trilogy - a kind of 'Back to the Future' with Richard III!
She was asked by Susan Lamb, another Ricardian author, to collaborate on a humorous book about Richard, 'Dickon's Diaries', where Richard (aka Dickon) narrates in Olde Englishe the escapades of his household at his castle of 'Muddleham'. You can see the type of humour used on our Facebook page, Dickon for his Dames: https://www.facebook.com/Dickiethird/
In 2017 one of her Ricardian short stories was accepted for inclusion in an anthology of scary stories edited by Dan Alatorre: The Box Under the Bed
Jennifer has been stalking dead monarchs since she was a child. It started with Mary, Queen of Scots, then moved onto Richard III. At least now it results in a story!
She won North Tyneside Libraries' Story Tyne short story competition in 2014 (no dead monarchs, but still not a cheerful read), and has been filling notebooks and hard-drives ever since. Her Kindred Spirits series, following the 'lives' of some very interesting ghostly communities, is published by Darkstroke, and her historical romances by Ocelot Press.
Jennifer is currently exploring some new ideas for historical romance, and hoping to visit Kindred Spirit friends old and new, north of the border...

Born and raised in the rolling Surrey downs, and following stints as in archaeology and publishing in London, Stirling and Gloucester, I now live and write surrounded by moors in King Richard III’s northern heartland.
My first novel, 'Time out of Time' (published June 2021), won the 2012 Chapter One Children’s Book Award and my second was put to one side in 2013 when the rediscovery of King Richard’s grave in a car park in Leicester was announced. A Ricardian since my teens, it prompted me at last to write a novel about the real Richard III for older children. So 'The Order of the White Boar' and its sequel 'The King’s Man' were born.
A third novel in the sequence, 'King in Waiting', was published in 2021, with 'Sons of York; to follow in June 2022. Together the four books explore the life and legacy of the real King Richard III, not the fictionalized villain of Shakespeare's play and 'traditional' history. They have been called 'A wonderful work of historical fiction for both children and adults' by the Bulletin of the Richard III Society.
I've also edited two anthologies of short fiction by authors inspired by King Richard: 'Grant Me the Carving of My Name' and 'Right Trusty and Well Beloved...' Both are sold in support of Scoliosis Association UK (SAUK), helping people today who have the same spinal condition as King Richard.
Marla Skidmore grew up in a small medieval city in the Yorkshire Dales. After living in Europe for a number of years she returned home and became a mature student, emerging with a Dual Honours Degree in History and English and a Masters degree in English Literture. On completion of her studies she became a College Lecturer. A History enthusiast, she is fascinated by the events and people of the past and this is reflected in much of her writing.
Her award-winning novel 'Renaissance - The Fall and Rise of a King,' is inspired by the rediscovery of King Richard III's remains and gives an entirely new perspective on this controversial king. She is a contributing author of 'A Chorus of Seven,' a collection of short stories and poems and 'Grant Me the Carving of My Name,' an anthology of short stories inspired by King Richard III - both of which are available on Amazon.
She is presently involved in two projects - researching and writing a sequel to 'Renaissance, and a romantic murder mystery set during the Peninsula Wars.
When not immersed in her writing, Marla enjoys exploring ancient ruins, tending a very large garden and taking long walks with her West Highland Terrier in the countryside surrounding the Dales village where she now lives.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2019Grant Me the Carving of My Name: An anthology of short fiction inspired by King Richard III
By Alex Marchant, Narrell M Harris, Susan Lamb, et al
This anthology of short fiction takes its inspiration from King Richard III, and is sold in support of the Scoliosis Association UK, an affliction that Richard suffered from.
The stories included in this collection run the gamut from straightforward historical fiction to fantasy and science fiction (including one of the most original explanations as to what happened to the Princes in the Tower that I’ve ever encountered), and include the humorous as well as the serious. As with any anthology by multiple authors, I found myself liking some stories better than others, but all are good and have introduced me to a number of new authors whose other stories I am now eager to read. The following are two of my favorites, both of which include a touch of fantasy.
The first is “Ave Atque Vale” by Frances Quinn.
The title means Hale and Farewell, and that phrase perfectly describes this story. Henry VII had died, and finds himself in a strange, desolate land, shackled in chains of gold. While trying to figure out what’s going on, he meets someone from his past and receives some disarming news.
The other is “The Beast of Middleham Moor” by Alex Marchant
Set near Middleham in Yorkshire, this is a lovely story about a schoolboy who, after being bullied by his classmates, decides to take a shortcut home from school across the moor top, only to get lost when the weather turns nasty. He seeks shelter from the late season snowstorm in the hollow of an old hawthorn tree, and ends up receiving help from an unexpected source.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2020A wonderful variety of short stories and chapter selections in tribute to Richard III. Some I have read already but most I had not and it was most entertaining to read each author's concept on Richard.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2019What an enjoyable, entertaining, and (at times) heartrending collection of short stories. I'm afraid I use that word 'heartrending' in every review of any sort of Ricardian fiction - but that's inevitable, really. That I expected. What I WASn't quite expecting from this collection was how heartWARMing many of these stories turned out to be. The variety among the stories was just right; some were more lighthearted, some more sobering, all thought-provoking in some way. Each took a different perspective on some aspect of King Richard's life, and each was well-executed. Admittedly, at first, my jaw dropped in flabbergastation at some of the scenarios - Aliens! Mischief-making ghosties! - but these too were incredibly creative, fascinating, and (in some cases) side-splittingly funny. Overall: Brilliant. .
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2019Anthologies by several authors are hard to rate. This one has some 5 stars, but also, alas, some big fat zeros.
There is one science fiction tale that I would love to see fleshed out....
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2022Found two new authors in this collection. So happy to have read this collection of Richard III stories. New ideas new perspectives.New interpretations. Enjoyed some...laughed, cried, and more...and was saddened by others discussing his possible treatment by those who were around him when he was young..who made fun o him or attempted to diminish him...or were ashamed of him because of his disabilities. Peers and family alike. Does nothing ever change!?? Anyway ...well worth the read.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2020Short stories about King Richard III.
There is one about the disappearance of the two princes.
If you are a fan of Richard III, you need this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2018You can't help but chuckle.
You can't help but to experience and live through it all alongside the main characters. At times very emotional and thought provoking this collection of short Ricardian stories delivers...even in a way that's 'out of this world'! Multiple Genres leave choices for everyone. Pure Joy for a good Cause, too!!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2019I liked most of the stories in here and the ones I didn't like were because they didn't gel with me personally. I particularly liked the various depictions of Richard III. So far I've reread some stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great collection!
If, like me, you devour anything Richard III connected, I vow you will enjoy this great little anthology of short stories about the King. Each is well-written, and there are lots of different angles, viewpoints, imaginings and thoughts on various aspects of Richard's life. All thoroughly enjoyable, and as the anthology raises funds for scoliosis research what's not to like? I recommend you buy this right now. Eagerly awaiting the second anthology due to come early next year I think.

3.0 out of 5 stars Richard III
Some interesting stories in the collection. Quality varies, however, and some writers don't seem to know how or where to end their tale. Worth reading - anything that points out Richard III was a good man and a good king is worthwhile. Pity about the usurpers sitting on his throne.
