Grant Me the Carving of My Name: An anthology of short fiction inspired by King Richard III Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 115 ratings

A boyhood mishap in York. A ghostly walking tour of Leicester. A deadly snowstorm on the moors above Middleham. Alien abduction in the very heart of the city of London. Loss of a beloved brother, death of an untrue cousin. Just some of the events recounted in these tales by authors inspired by King Richard III. Much-maligned since his death, the real man has often been lost in the shadow of the scheming villain of Shakespeare’s famous play. Following the rediscovery of his centuries-lost grave in 2012, many people have come to question this evil reputation, and King Richard’s supporters (known as Ricardians) are seizing the chance to bring his real history to a wider audience. The authors collected here have all, in their different ways, sought to cast a light on that story. Elegiac, mystical, brutal, light-hearted, uplifting. Will you find your new favourite author within the pages of this anthology? Sold in support of Scoliosis Association UK (SAUK) with a Foreword by Philippa Gregory (author of The White Queen) and edited by Alex Marchant With contributions from: Narrelle M. Harris Wendy Johnson Susan Lamb Joanne R. Larner Matthew Lewis Máire Martello Frances Quinn J. P. Reedman Marla Skidmore Richard Unwin Jennifer C. Wilson Cover illustration by Riikka Katajisto

A must have!
Such an enjoyable read, and a purchase for a wonderful cause -to help those who, like King Richard, have scoliosis. I found some of my favorite authors here, and some soon to be! They’ve given us a wonderful variety of stories about Richard, in a variety of genres. It’s a must for any Ricardian, or historical fiction fans in general. It will leave you wanting more! ~Kim Deslandes

Grant Me the Carving of My Name: An anthology of short fiction inspired by King Richard III
By Alex Marchant, Narrell M Harris, Susan Lamb, et al

This anthology of short fiction takes its inspiration from King Richard III, and is sold in support of the Scoliosis Association UK, an affliction that Richard suffered from.

The stories included in this collection run the gamut from straightforward historical fiction to fantasy and science fiction (including one of the most original explanations as to what happened to the Princes in the Tower that I’ve ever encountered), and include the humorous as well as the serious. As with any anthology by multiple authors, I found myself liking some stories better than others, but all are good and have introduced me to a number of new authors whose other stories I am now eager to read. The following are two of my favorites, both of which include a touch of fantasy.

The first is “Ave Atque Vale” by Frances Quinn.

The title means Hale and Farewell, and that phrase perfectly describes this story. Henry VII had died, and finds himself in a strange, desolate land, shackled in chains of gold. While trying to figure out what’s going on, he meets someone from his past and receives some disarming news.

The other is “The Beast of Middleham Moor” by Alex Marchant

Set near Middleham in Yorkshire, this is a lovely story about a schoolboy who, after being bullied by his classmates, decides to take a shortcut home from school across the moor top, only to get lost when the weather turns nasty. He seeks shelter from the late season snowstorm in the hollow of an old hawthorn tree, and ends up receiving help from an unexpected source.

A wonderful variety of short stories and chapter selections in tribute to Richard III. Some I have read already but most I had not and it was most entertaining to read each author's concept on Richard.

What an enjoyable, entertaining, and (at times) heartrending collection of short stories. I'm afraid I use that word 'heartrending' in every review of any sort of Ricardian fiction - but that's inevitable, really. That I expected. What I WASn't quite expecting from this collection was how heartWARMing many of these stories turned out to be. The variety among the stories was just right; some were more lighthearted, some more sobering, all thought-provoking in some way. Each took a different perspective on some aspect of King Richard's life, and each was well-executed. Admittedly, at first, my jaw dropped in flabbergastation at some of the scenarios - Aliens! Mischief-making ghosties! - but these too were incredibly creative, fascinating, and (in some cases) side-splittingly funny. Overall: Brilliant. .

Anthologies by several authors are hard to rate. This one has some 5 stars, but also, alas, some big fat zeros.
There is one science fiction tale that I would love to see fleshed out....

Found two new authors in this collection. So happy to have read this collection of Richard III stories. New ideas new perspectives.New interpretations. Enjoyed some...laughed, cried, and more...and was saddened by others discussing his possible treatment by those who were around him when he was young..who made fun o him or attempted to diminish him...or were ashamed of him because of his disabilities. Peers and family alike. Does nothing ever change!?? Anyway ...well worth the read.

You can't help but to experience and live through it all alongside the main characters. At times very emotional and thought provoking this collection of short Ricardian stories delivers...even in a way that's 'out of this world'! Multiple Genres leave choices for everyone. Pure Joy for a good Cause, too!!

I liked most of the stories in here and the ones I didn't like were because they didn't gel with me personally. I particularly liked the various depictions of Richard III. So far I've reread some stories.

If, like me, you devour anything Richard III connected, I vow you will enjoy this great little anthology of short stories about the King. Each is well-written, and there are lots of different angles, viewpoints, imaginings and thoughts on various aspects of Richard's life. All thoroughly enjoyable, and as the anthology raises funds for scoliosis research what's not to like? I recommend you buy this right now. Eagerly awaiting the second anthology due to come early next year I think.

Some interesting stories in the collection. Quality varies, however, and some writers don't seem to know how or where to end their tale. Worth reading - anything that points out Richard III was a good man and a good king is worthwhile. Pity about the usurpers sitting on his throne.
