Greed: A Dark Contemporary Romance, Rumpelstiltskin Retelling Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 161 ratings

I thought they’d be my salvation, but they look at me like I'm theirs.

Beaten, starved, broken. With nowhere else to go, my only hope to survive is to sell my soul to the devil. After all, when you have nothing, even poison starts to look tempting. But the brutal men that work beneath him are just as trapped as I am, and now it's too late for me to back out. They’re forced to make me into one of them, but I'll use those skills to be King's downfall.
I'll set them free, or die trying.
But with bodies piling up, and secrets coming to light, what once seemed like the lesser of two evils is proving just how blind desperation can make a person. If even these vicious men can't stop him, what hope do I have? I can’t even save myself, so how can I be expected to save anyone? Even if I’m doomed to fail, I have to at least try. Because if I can't pull this off? Mom’s screams echo through my mind, a haunting reminder that there are many fates worse than death.

This is a dark contemporary romance where our leading lady gets all of her men, and the fourth book of the Sinners Fairytale Retellings series. Each installment can be read independently and each retelling is intended for mature audiences, since they may contain triggers. Every author contributing to this series guarantees a HEA.

Fourth book in the series and told in multiple POV’s, I thoroughly enjoyed Greed. I will be reading more from this author!

Elysium starts off as a semi meek and timid woman who’s been abused by her father. When Grave is out on a job by his boss, Elysium’s father ends up offering a trade to Grave…. His daughter in exchange for his debt wiped clean. Normally he wouldn’t have taken the deal, but realizing Elysium needed help he took it and brought her home with him. We get to watch as the boys realize their obsession over her and as Elysium grows a backbone, with the help of her guys of course!

Greed is a dark and gritty retelling of Rumpelstiltskin and I am totally here for it! It is filled with secrets, lie, mystery and of course steam, Greed is an outstanding and imaginative retelling of Rumpelstiltskin.

Please read trigger warnings as it does have sensitive subjects for some readers.

The story was great. I loved how it was Rumplestiltskin esked but far from the fairy tell that it wasn't predictable. The characters were also intriguing and relateable. However, at certain parts of the story I got a bit confused on who said what to whom and who was speaking and who was doing a certain action. This by no means had anything to do with grammar but the assumption that the reader knew what was going on and at times it was unclear. Also, I felt that one of the men was almost a last thought because he really didn't come into play until the last half of the story. I think that this could have been redefined a bit to bring him more in line to the story.

This definitely has trigger warnings listed by the author on page 3 and are easy to find but a quick run down for those who don't have KU and aren't comfortable purchasing without knowing what they are: h is abused by father and boss but not the harem although they treat her well they aren't heroes and are steeped in violence and blood.

I really enjoyed this quick read and thought the author did a great job with only 200 pages to not only bring the characters to life but she also gave them depth and their own voice with each growing as a character throughout the book.

While I've only read this author one other time it was just as good and I'll definitely be checking more of her work out.

If like me you love a good psycho alpha male then you'll fall in love with Grave and his charming ways. I seriously would have been happy to read another two hundred pages of this story, add in Everett and Maverick and they just made the icing on that alpha cake even more delicious.

Need the cherry on top? Well, Elys makes a great h and I loved watching her go from just trying to survive the abuse and mine field of her daily life to blossoming in a safer environment and opening her heart up to realizing how precarious her new life truly is not just for her but also the guys to deciding she was going to save them even if she couldn't save herself if it was the last thing she did.

You won't want to miss this one so go enjoy reading!

Story was great until the random time jumps ruined it. FMC was rescued and then she met everyone. Great. Things were slowly building, she was a broken character with real potential, the guys were mysterious. Awesome. I was intrigued. Then.. time jump to week later. We miss her settling in, getting comfortable, and the start of the relationships building. There’s a single scene where she’s learning to cook with Ev and then… time jump again!!! This time to weeks later!! WEEKS! You can’t do that to your readers and expect them to stay interested. We don’t get to go on the journey with Elysium at all! Significant time jumps this early are 100% a mistake because it completely stunts the reader’s connection to the story. The next scene we have with Elysium (after the cooking) is a scene where she’s pondering whether it’s ok to sleep next to Grave and Everett, and the guys later discuss the merits of a three way relationship. I’m sorry what? They have all clearly started to form feelings for each other but I felt disconnected from that because… again, you have to take your readers along for the journey! Otherwise it’s like being dropped into the beginning of a relationship with no context or knowledge of how things developed. I was not invested at all because I didn’t know any of them.
Elysium already experienced so much, to the point where she was starting to like them. It felt strange. I didn’t feel connected to any character. It ruined the story.

Ok, I love J Kearston's writing but I held off on this book for a long time because I didn't love the blurb. Fairy tale retellings are not my cup of tea. I was wrong though, so very very wrong. At it's heart, this book is about some unhinged psychos who fall for a woman with a traumatic past who is equal parts heaven and hell. She's sweet and loving and sees them for who they are but she has a dark side that can hang with their brand of crazy. I absolutely adore this book and am so happy I have the physical trophy copy of it now too!

I loved this story and was hooked from the beginning.
Elysium lives with her abusive father, with no current way of escaping. Until she makes a deal with a stranger, but it looks like she may have swapped one monster for another.
Elyse has survived so far by using her wits, and as she tries to fit into her new life, she realises that they are all trapped.
I loved that Elyse was determined to make her life better and was wiling to bide her time and plan it out carefully so that she wouldn't have to constantly looking over her shoulder.
The guys were dark, gritty and dangerous, but I loved how they softened around her.
The plot was brilliant, the way everyone underestimates Elyse helps them in their work . I couldn't have predicted the ending, but it was perfect for Elyse and the guys.

I keep looking forward to each new release of this series. I love that they are all standalones and each tells a perfect story.

I really enjoyed this take on the classic Rumpelstillskin tale. Like the previous books in the series, it’s a very loose retelling of the story but it does hint at a few key elements. I didn’t know which direction the story would be going and I found I was quite surprised with the ending. I wish there was a follow up book to know what was going to happen and I wouldn’t mind a bit more of these characters.

The author did a great job with this book.

What a telling of a story from times past. A bunch of guys working for a tyrant who controls their lives with an iron fist. One man makes a decision which will change everything and lead them all to the truth. But the path it takes to get there is a road less traveled and is incredibly hard work. The truth will set you free.
