Seven years ago, I made the life changing decision to leave my corporate job as Human Resources Manager and go round the world backpacking for a year. Coming back home to friends and family was wonderful but it was clear to me and my partner we couldn't go back to the way we were: overweight, unhealthy and miserable. We made some radical changes to our diet and made a conscious decision to live a healthier and greener life.

I am an advocate for GREEN living nowadays. Anything that can help maintain optimum Health and Help the Planet is always a good thing.

My personal experiences have lead me to research and write a series of books about Green Living to help spread the word why it is so vitally important that we adopt a more responsible attitude towards our own Health and that of our Planet.

My first book series GREEN up your LIFE aims to get you started on the green path to a healthier you. You will find that it is EASY, SIMPLE AND CHEAP to go Green.

All my books are published by VIDDA Publishing, a company my partner John Hodges and I set up specialising in books on the subjects of Health & Nutrition, Education & Natural History. Feel free to contact / follow us at:

I purchased this book for two reason. First is mainly out of curiosity- how in the world you can green up your period?- a question that popped in my head after reading the title. Secondly, because I might find something relevant for my wife and my sister. As I checked out this book, I learned something that is very unusual to my knowledge about a woman's monthly period and what are the typical products out there are being commonly used. The information are written in a way that even men like me could easily understand. I amazed about the products mentioned by the author, form organic item to cups. This is something that I would recommend to all the women out there. There are FAQs -like portions that would totally give you the PROS and CONS of each item, why or why not should you consider it. A very eco friendly way to deal with menstruation.

This book is easy to read and pretty comprehensive. It goes over the main tools women use to manage their periods, both in the modern tradition and the greener alternatives. I deducted a star because it could have used a few more references to back up some of the claims made (I looked up a few of them and they seemed legitimate, but the author should make it easy for us to verify what she's telling us by already including references or links to studies etc.) and it needed a bit of copy-editing, nothing too bad but there were a few typos I noticed, as well as for a few bits that seemed slightly in the vein of scare-mongering to me.

The section on menstrual cups needs to be updated and more in-depth, as TSS has now been associated with their use as well, although in MUCH lower rates of incidence than those associated with modern tampons (which is already extremely low, but still a concern). I understand this is a primer but a brief paragraph on fitting (every woman is different inside, after all, and what works for one might not for another) would have also been a nice addition. I'm also concerned by the fact that two of the cups linked to (Comfycup and Lady Cup/Rainbow Cup) appear not to be legitimate brands but knock-off brands made in China and thus probably not medical-grade silicone or made to consumer safety standards. (There are a lot of these knock-off cups for sale on websites like Am*zon or Eb*y, most of them made to look like legitimate brands and many of their listings claiming to be made in the USA and of medical-grade silicone despite being made in China and of food-grade silicone or worse. These cups are often in the same price range as legitimate, quality cups and at first glance appear no different. Do your research before buying any brand, don't assume it's legitimate just because it has a nice name and a lot of positive reviews!)

Overall a good resource, but I wouldn't recommend it as a sole source of information when switching to reusables, especially menstrual cups, as there are a lot more factors and variables involved than mentioned here. Still, I hope this book gets around, as the information inside it could help a lot of people, both young and old, make more informed choices about their body and planet.

I wish I had known this information when I still had "my monthlies". Ok, I had heard about some of these options but was uncertain and never tried reusable options. In her book, Green Up Your Period, Pilar Bueno explains the benefits and drawbacks of conventional and alternative menstrual products. She explains why these products are good, even better options for women than the disposable products we have been programmed to use by marketers. They are better for us and for the environment. She goes a step further and explains how to use them, especially the cup, which many women understandably be hesitant about otherwise (like I was). I will be passing the link to this book on to my female family members for sure.

I would have given this book another star, but the language is informal British English and some isn't as clear as it could be for American readers.

I am, however, thankful that somebody is addressing this topic.

A few years ago, out of necessity, I began using washable pads and haven't missed the discomfort of disposables one bit. In the last few months, out of another necessity, I learned how to use the menustral cups -- and I can't recommend them too strongly.

This book helps hand women the keys, and offers them the driver's seat when it comes to their time of the month.

We are all on varying journeys, so not everyone will rush out and try the newer alternatives to disposables...but this book can help give you informed options.

A good, concise, read. It took me about an hour to get through it.

This is an outstanding resource for women who are health/eco-conscious or wanting to become “greener” in their lives. As a biomedical instructor I can assure you that Pilar Bueno does a fabulous job of discussing the health risks such as toxic shock syndrome as well as the chemicals associated with the commercial products that could cause cancer, hormone disturbances and infections. She points out that a woman will over 15,500 products in her lifetime and add 3kg of waste to the landfill every year. That is a lot of waste of which a good percentage has ended up in certain areas of our oceans (24,000 plastic applicators in 2009 according to oceanconservancy.org).

I absolutely love how the author goes into great detail discussing the alternatives (organic sanitary towels, cup, reusable towels, reusable tampons, sea sponges, and making your own pads). She answers many questions including where to purchase these alternative items!! I also loved the bonus at the end of eating healthy and taking care of you to minimize PMS! It is a wealth of knowledge for any woman wanting Eco-friendly alternatives to improve their health during their menstruation cycle! Excellent!

This is a must read for every woman who has periods. I never even considered alternative sanitary products until reading this. The book is nicely paced, informative and relatable. There are no lectures just options for women to consider. Can't believe the amount of plastic in a sanitary towel. I've already ordered my alternative. So pleased I read this book.
