- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2018This is a very nice story, not perfect, but I recommend it. It's a contemporary romance between two men their 50s, which I really enjoyed reading for a change. It's pretty much pure fluff, with no conflict between the main characters and lots of sweet domestic moments.
The first part is about the two of them dating, with a lot of sexual tension. They decide to wait a little while to have sex for the first time. Then there are a lot of sex scenes. They aren't kinky but they're slightly unusual, in terms of what usually happens in m/m romance novels, which is great. I also really like that the characters communicate so clearly about sex.
There's a plot having to do with Mitch's bad retail job which gets resolved partly because of how supportive Karl is, which I thought was very romantic. Karl has two dogs who have their own personalities, and of course I enjoyed everything about them. Both men have had hard times in their lives, but the story doesn't dwell on their pasts. The ending is very happy.
A mild criticism: in general, the dialogue in this book doesn't feel realistic to me. The characters use each other's first names all the time, and they rarely use contractions. I think the book needed a little bit more editing.
Overall, I liked this, and I'll read this author again.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2017This was a short quick sweet read that I liked. Mitch Graham and Karl Hartman are meant for each other. Mitch works as a gardener at Green's Thump and Karl works from home. When Mitch decides to visit a dog park a greyhound takes a liking to him turns out the dog belongs to Karl. Karl hires Mitch to work on his front yard they get closer. I really liked both of these character's they weren't twenty somethings they are both middle age and both knew what they want. They were both going through the motions of the life that they had. This was my first time reading this author and this book did have a few errors in it, but this was a really sweet read with no drama with exs or anything like that it was very real and I am looking forward to reading more from this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2017First, let me say this book was certainly not perfect. It was somewhat cheesy and corny, a few things didn’t really make sense, and had a few spelling/grammatical errors.
So why 5 stars? Because this author gets it. The characters, Mitch and Karl, were real, living real life situations. They were mature men, not twinks; the sexual situations were genuine and realistic, not gratuitously taking up every other page; and these were characters we real live not-so-perfect men could relate to.
The lessons of this story to M/M romance authors: romance happens between men of all ages, not just 20-somethings; most men do not have perfectly sculpted bodies; and yes, you actually have to prepare for certain sexual activities if you don’t want a real mess.
This author has shown that you can present a lovely, genuine and hot romance story without the unrealistic patronization.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2017I'm curious on how one reviewer called this 'well-written'. Perhaps the way Elliott wrote this is a new style, but 'well-written'? Maybe for a first novel, but it could have used an editor (or a better one if there was one) for the layout used. It's written in thick paragraphs, all the speaking included. There is no break between each character speaking. So, in one paragraph you have two or more people having a discussion. Which can make following a conversation tricky sometimes. And the entire story is just a lot of paragraphs filling your screen. I guess the lack of grammar issues and spelling mistakes is the low bar set for 'well-written'.
This did not mean that the story was BAD. Far from it. It was a nice, uncomplicated romp. This is a feel-good short story and it fulfills that need if that's what you want. One will have a high chance of contracting the warm and fuzzies while reading this. If you want a lot of drama, you won't find it here. The wavelets that our characters encountered are relatively easy to navigate. The story, on a whole, is pretty boring, yet short enough that one can get through it in a sitting or two without getting so overwhelmed with boredom. There weren't really any plot twists that one couldn't see coming. The ending was easy to predict, but none of this detracted from the simple charm that is 'Green's Thumb'.
If you want a simple story, this is your book. If you want something with a bit more plot/drama/mystery/suspense, this will not fill your cup.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 20184.75 stars. It was wonderful to read a book about men in their 50s. They're not kids, they know a good thing when they see it and are open and honest about what they want. Mitch and Karl have an instant attraction, but take their relationship and a slow steady pace. They build on that attraction and form a great foundation. Mitch's kids were the best. If you're looking for a sweet, no angst book grab this one.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2023This is sweet story. A chance meeting brings Mitch & Karl together and sparks fly from the start. It is all worth reading to get to their HEA.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2023An quick entertaining love story of love finding you when you least expect it. Uplifting novel and I appreciated the bits of reality that kept this book in the here and now of real life.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2020Green’s Thumb is a sweet story reminding us that it’s never too late to find love or to start anew. The lead characters are in their fifties and neither are looking for love when it finds them. The story is a nicely paced, old fashioned yet very refreshing romance. The characters are relatable and smart and sexy. I saw myself a lot in them. There is a lot of real life in this uplifting, romantic story of second chance love we all wish we could find!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Romantic, sexy and crisp
This is a very cute, heartwarming story about two men who are 50+ and are getting a second chance at romance and companionship.
The writing was easy-flowing, with just enough attention to each main character, the supporting 'cast' and other situational elements of the story. In that sense, I felt the editing was excellent.
But the proofing on the other end - it was dismal. In the first chapter alone, I found 13 errors, most punctuation-related. I had to turn a blind eye to the text in order to enjoy the book. This was unexpected from a 'reedited version July 2020'.
Back to the content itself, I enjoyed the delicate, slow and mature way in which the relationship between Mitch and Karl developed. Both are very likeable characters. Mitch, especially, reminded me of the stepdad from One Mississippi. I didn't want the story to end.
I am waiting for a follow-up book or a series of this type from the author. His other works belong to genres that are simply not my preferred ones. But this book was very nice. I am smiling, smiling, smiling :)
P.S.: Isn't it a trend these days for indie authors to include recipes of dishes mentioned in the story at the end of the book? Well, I want one for the whole-wheat pizza dough. Lol.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple and straightforward
Two older men, one having lived a forced life in an unhappy hetero marriage into he finally couldn't, and one having lost the man of his life to cancer several years earlier.
The pragmatic ways they both go about confronting life, the happy moment they happen to meet at a doggy park, and the quick love that develops between them makes for an easy, rightly optimistic read.

4.0 out of 5 stars For those older in life ...
I am older myself, and it was really good to read a gay romance about guys over 30. I enjoy stories about teens or young adults too (I was one once), but it was nice to become familiar with older male characters for a change. Mitch and Karl, the main characters, are the sort of average guys most of us would be pleased to get to know.
This is a sweet romance that leaves you feeling good. This is not to say that there are no problems to overcome along the way. Life is never really perfect, so of course there are a few problems for Mitch and Karl to sort out. To add more to the sweet mix, there are two adorable dogs, Nike and Blaze, included, so if you like canines this book is for you.
The book is short, and perhaps could be called a long short-story. It is ideal if you are busy and don't have too much time to read.
Green's Thumb gets four stars from me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two strangers with horrible back stories turn out to be perfect for each other
Despite both main characters having had to deal with pain and disaster, they both rapidly know they’ve found ‘the one’, it just takes a while to tell everyone they know. Mitch realises his dream, with support, and Karl finally moves on from a devastating event. It’s almost sickening how perfect they are for each other 🙂

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Job! Two thumbs up!
Really enjoyed Mitch and Karl's story. Not a fluffy puffy story, but a genuine, this how it goes read!
I loved their meeting and growth as a couple. Very sweet read!
