CANDYMAN: Series Prequel (The Grid Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 101 ratings

Can the dark half of a secret split personality win the girl?

You don't know I exist. Don't feel bad. No one knows I exist. I'm Reno Sundown and I live only in his head. Yeah, you read that right. I'm the dark side of a hero's personality. His big, bad, dark secret. And that was fine, for two-hundred years. From the days of being an Old West outlaw to being a badass Breaker on the Grid hero. I was cool with it all. Only getting the bad. Doing the dirtiest of deeds while he kept his handsome hands clean.

Until her. Emma Sundown. And of course, I fell for her first. But the Cowboy used my one night to win her. The bastard. And now he's gone and broken her heart. He's going to pay for that.

Even if it means we're both going to die.

The thrilling fanfiction prequel that began the wildly popular Grid Series! Read how it all began!

USA Today Bestselling Author Jas T. Ward is a born and raised Texan residing in the Austin area. A mixed bag of creativity spinning tales of paranormal, urban fantasy with a touch of darkness and horror wrapped within a love story. Diving into contemporary romance (after being dared to do so by her readers) she created characters both real and uniquely twisted like the author herself. She publishes titles as a hybrid author. Her contemporary romances are published by Hot Tree Publishing. A mother of three diverse and independent grown children and fur mom to foster fails fondly called The Ward Herd. She prides being known as the “Queen Niche’ Bitch” which is a fun way of saying she sucks at writing to market.

But her readers don’t seem to mind.

“Why the Ward Way? Because I believe in writing books that take a reader on a thrill-ride. Action, danger, drama, sure. But also, laughter, tears of joy and moments that make you want to stop just to scream. My books are twisted, complex and full of heroes and heroines full of flaws and heart, but you can’t deny–total badasses. Welcome to my worlds, take a seat, get to know me and the characters and I assure you… You’ll be glad you did.” - Jas T Ward

Welcome to the Grid. I highly recommend reading this before Book 1 'Madness'

Welcome to the Grid. I highly recommend reading this before Book 1 'Madness'
This is a short story that is great to introduce 'The Shadow-Keeper' series I found it rather confusing to start with but once I got inside the head of little Jess and worked out what was going on I just had to keep turning the pages. No child should have to experience what Jess and Sundown had to go through. It is advisable to read this short before 'The Madness ~ Book 1', because from what I can gather it makes the whole reading experience more pleasurable, and will help you understand the true madness that fills the pages of the first full book in the series'

I first discovered Reno Sundown and the Shadow-Keepers series by Jas T. Ward through fan fiction online. I fell in love with Reno & the Shadow-Keepers' world, and wanted more. Reno Sundown is the keeper of Madness (the first book in the series). Candyman tells Reno's back story - every heart-wrenching detail. Reno begins his life as just a passenger in Jess Brady's head - developed to deal with all the bad stuff that Jess went through during his childhood. Reno has thoughts & feelings, but since he doesn't have his own body, must live through Jess. Once the bad is over, Reno is relegated back to the dark recesses of Jess's mind until he is needed again. This continues until Jess is well into adulthood. As you can imagine, this can't last forever, and doesn't. Once Reno falls in love, he is forced to choose the path that is best for him - to be his own man, with his own life, his own body. This book is a journey filled with heartbreak, growth, laughter & love.

One of the things that I liked most about this book - and since I've read the others - this series, is how complex the characters are. Good guys, bad guys, in-between guys - Jas T. Ward shows us all aspects of all the characters. No one is all good or all bad, but a mixture of both, which gives the book a full-bodied flavor that's sorely lacking in much of today's writing. If you are looking for a series that will keep you on the edge of your seat & leave you wanting more, this is the one for you! So sit back, grab a bag of candy & get ready for a wild ride. Welcome to THE GRID!

I don't think I have ever read a book like this before. Totally unique world building and characters and I'm dying to know more about this world! I have to say I'm totally in love with Reno! He just hits all my buttons. I find it so interesting that what should be the bad guy in this situation is the good guy. I was so intrigues by Reno and hoping for him to win his battle. As for Jess... the good guy.. the hero in this book... I totally despised him. I found him to be cruel and petty and that makes for no hero in any book!

I can't wait to dive into the next book in the series and learn more about Reno and Emma

Wow, just wow. This is the very first book I have read by this author and am I ever grateful I picked it up. It was a straight through read for me, as I needed to know more and more about what made the characters tick.
One is the fact that one is really the main character, Jess, and that poor boy went through things no kid should ever have to go through. Poor baby.
Two is that he (Jess) shares head space with Reno. OMG, does that ever get deep.
The things they go through are intense and it's just incredible how it all plays out. The ending, loved it and am not one to give spoilers, but let me just say this. I just bought Madness, the next story in the line, because that need to know more is crawling all over me.

Great and amazing job to the author, Jas Ward. You have yourself a new fan.

I loved the POV this story was told in. At first, it was a tad confusing but it all became clear about halfway through the book. The battle of wills between these two was electric. Neither compromising on how to coexist as one and ultimately each getting what they wanted but at a steep price. Wonderful adventure!

Delightful read. As someone who studies psychology, I really enjoyed reading this. A well written piece with a split personality with an alter who gains more and more independence and will.

There's a lot, a lot going on in Jess', I mean Sundown's. I mean ... I don't know what I mean, but there is a lot going on behind those eyes. I am so excited about this series...let the games begin!

I didn't really know what to expect from this book after reading the shadow keeps series, but wow what a book.
It was great learning Sundown's (Jess's name for him) side of it, he was the bad side or split personality of Jess that had helped him from when his mum died he was the voice in his head that kept him from going mad, he could do everything except he didn't have a body, he would talk to Jess but he needed to feed the madness by hurting others and he helped Jess right through to him dying and being given a 2nd chance of going to heaven after proving that he was worthy at being a breaker and doing good rather than evil but for how long no one knew, they had already been doing it for 150 years.
Jess and Sundown fell out and Sundown refused to talk to Jess or help him, this book explains why and what happened in the run up to Sundown getting his own life, name of Reno, and body.
It was well written and showed from when Sundown was first in existence and his destiny started although the only people that knew about him were Jess and eventually Bounce. It was great to read Sundown's side of it. Well worth a read even if you haven't read the series yet.

“I was sent to handle the bad, the painful, and the most horrible that might come back this kid’s way.”

Ms. Ward has a very clever way with words, bringing Reno Sundown’s personality split to life.

Well written and edited, fast paced, this intro to The Grid Series was witty and entertaining. The world with Breakers and supernatural beings is very easy to dive into.
