4.6 out of 5 stars 178 ratings

An emotional rockstar and military romance that can be read as a standalone.

Her demon stalks her.
His demons haunt the shadows of his head.

Internet star turned rocker Quinn Wylder never asked to be famous. So when she starts receiving disturbing messages while on tour with her new band, her reluctant dream quickly becomes a nightmare.

Army veteran Tanner Clarke never asked to be medically retired. But when an injury and PTSD diagnosis force him out of service, he’s left lost and alone in a civilian world that doesn’t seem to have a place for him.

It was the perfect solution: the compassionate angel who needs security hiring the haunted warrior trained to protect. But the biggest battle they face may be one they never saw coming—guarding a body is nothing compared to protecting a heart.

GUARDING SHADOWS is a standalone Save Me novel from rockstar romance author Aly Stiles and military romance author Hazel James.

First let me say that I absolutely love this series. This book was everything that I hoped it would be. After reading it, I needed to sit back and absorb it all before I could write this. The fact that I absolutely adore both Hazel and Aly, and have had the pleasure of meeting them both at a signing a few years ago, I really was able to see the depths of their story and how much of themselves they put into it. The delivery hit the bullseye. Tanner and Quinn were so relatable, there were no rose colored glasses and clear paved roads for them. Watching the love for each other grow and build even with internal turmoil was absolutely beautiful Seeing bits of both authors blend so perfectly and deliver such a perfect storyline was just the best feeling. I learned from this book about things so did not know happened in society today. Stigmas that should not happen and how they can truly affect people in ways that should be criminal because of the way it negatively affected their lives. This is one of those books that stay with you and will come to mind a random moments. During those moments, it reminds us to have empathy, not judgement, because no two people are alike. So well written and executed ladies. I am so thankful for the opportunity to have read this and learned something. This and the entire series is a absolute must read!!!

Okay, so first of all WOW!!!

Let's just sit with that for a moment. Whew! This story, about Tanner & Quinn, is just amazeballs. From page one - no, even before page one, when I read Aly's note in the beginning - I was gripped & intrigued & wanted to know all the things! I wanted to see into Tanner's heart & Quinn's light. I wanted to get to know these characters, and the story does an excellent job of letting that happen.

Their story is emotional, oh so very emotional! I shed tears, but they weren't all aching. Some were tears of pure merriment because the banter here is STRONG! Their little jokes with each other. The way they REACH each other... Pure joy. The mystery of Quinn's stalker & the supporting cast of characters (Davies & Colt are hilaaaarious, btw) are written wonderfully, as well. <3

Highly recommend this, it's one of my top 2021 reads!! 10++ stars!!

    ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5

This rock princess meets military veteran romance is stunningly honest and extremely relevant. The approach taken by these two authors regarding real issues facing career military members who are transitioning to civilian life is intelligent and impactful. The glimpses of the lives of members of a rock band rising in the music world are insightful and intriguing.

Quinn and Tanner are polar opposite on the spectrum of personalities. Their connection is critical and central to their existence. They intersect in that place where hearts meet and beat in synchronicity. Neither can conquer their fears individually. However, there is no force that can withstand this fierce duo.

The collaboration between Aly Stiles and Hazel James is tightly written. These authors provide a frank look into the worlds of music and the military, respectively. Their no-holds-barred observations are emotional, humorous, and thought-provoking. The story is uniquely and gracefully written.

Guarding Shadows is a beautiful addition to the Save Me Series. It kept me awake into the early morning hours and challenged my positions on several social issues with its informative offerings. I hope that these two authors will reconvene to write books in the future. Their creative chemistry is all one could hope for in a literary collaboration.

Guarding Shadows is a phenomenal read. After binge reading the entire series up until this point I had a hard time deciding who stole my heart more. The final answer is Tanner and Quinn. Tanner and Quinn will win your heart over the minute they meet up state side. You feel the pull and their connection. You feel every emotion Tanner fights when it comes down to his family and his PTSD. Tanner is stronger then he gives himself credit for when it comes down to everything. Quinn is amazing. I love how she just soothes Tanner when he needs it the most. There are so many emotions swirling in this book that you will not want to put it down for even a few minutes. I'm just in awe with what Aly Stiles and Hazel James bring to these pages with Tanner and Quinn. Guarding Shadows is everything I wanted it to be and more in this rocker romance. I just could not get enough of this one.

Wow - this writer duo made sure the Save Me series didn't skip a beat. I expected it from Aly Stiles, it's her series after all, but it was positively seamless with Hazel James who I will be checking out her other books for sure.

Tanner and Quinn are imperfectly perfect together. Tanner - wow - what a story and such a testament to how far we still have to go to treat our veterans fairly. Quinn - her heart is in the right place, she just needs to have the confidence to go for it. The way these two met and then fate brings them back together - thank goodness! I just adored their story and watching/reading them fall in love!! Sigh!

"You're safe. And loved and so very cared for." Oh my heart!
"You didn't just help me face my shadows, you helped me find the light..." Tears!

There are so many facets to this story. The connections from Afghanistan, the band that is its own dysfunctional family, Tanner's most definitely dysfunctional family and watching him fight through the shadows while Quinn is pulling him into the light.

Gah! This story was just so wonderful. It was inspiring, heartful, and tragic all wrapped into page after page. Thank you Aly and Hazel for such a beautiful story and we are all better for knowing Tanner and what he represents. Great job!

Tears, laughter, anger, love... all of the feelings packed into this one little book, and to know that one of the authors is so close to someone who lives Tanner's reality. I can't even.

This story is by far, my favourite of the series. I didn't even guess the who dunnit!

I was given an ARC copy of this book for an honest review.

This is the longest i have waited to review a book before but i just did not have the words to ecplain it....but here goes...

Another amazing read from Aly, this was my first book from Hazel but i was not dissapointed.

Its the story or Quinn and Tanner a rockstar who is afraid she is not ready for where her career has taken her and Tanner who had been discharged from the military which is all he has ever known and is not sure where he fits in the world.

They meet on a German Military base and have a comnection from the start but go their separate ways.

A few months later Tanner has bren discharged with an injury and PTSD he is at the lowest point he could be at sleeping in his car with no where to go.

He ends up working for Quinn as her personal securtiy on her tour with her band......i wont say too much more i dont want to give anything away!!.

This book deals with the issue of PTSD im a way i have never read before and i have read a few....its heart wrenching and beautiful at the same time, i had to put it down a couple of times as as my heart couldnt take it!!.

This is the 3rd book in this series and they just keep getting better and better.

If you want to read about two broken souls who slowly start to heal each other to become an amazing force then this is for you.

Everyone needs to experience this at some point you will not regret it i can assure you.

If i could give this 10 i would...

A beautiful story that shines a light on the plight of veterans and their fight to fit back into society, with too little help and understanding. The epilogue gave me goosebumps, highlighting the ripple effect, kindness can have. Be kind and do no damage.

This is the fifth book of a wonderful series. Whilst it didn't quite move me to tears the same as a couple of the previous novels it was still an emotional read.

I hope this isn't the last Aly. More please.

Alyson Santos has always been a go to author for me - but I’m not sure what’s happening with Aly Styles? This book was very different to the others in this (renamed) series. The main characters were too sickly sweet Im/perfect, just unrealistic. The stalker drama was lame though I’m glad it gave the mh a job. Hope the author can find her edge again.
