About the author

My first book birthed the writer in me, prompting me to write my next book, in under four months, solidifying my commitment to write about how transforming adversity into gifts has taken me from the depths of depression and drugs to a life filled with joy and creativity.
As the mother of four incredibly passionate kids who lifeschool, I am blessed to have an extremely supportive and loving partner who is an elementary school teacher and relaxes by cooking. Our family enjoys to learn how to do things on our own, including hacking alternative medicine, recycling computers, and figuring out the mystery of how our lives unfold. I love interacting with my readers, so reach out to me at jen@spiritualgiftinstitute.com and share your favorite parenting moment or healing technique.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2017Format: KindleVerified Purchase4.5 stars HG (Hyperemesis Gravidurum), or medically severe pregnancy sickness, is no joke. The author recounts her journey through multiple pregnancies suffering from this illness, as well as a happy-ending pregnancy without it.
Disclaimer: I'm acquainted with the author via on social media.
The cure for HG? There isn't one, and by that, I mean, there isn't ONE. There were medical treatments, both effective and ineffective. There was the support and tips from midwives and doulas. There was working through psychological issues, including ending a relationship that included domestic violence. There was acupuncture and bed rest and Mayan abdominal massage and a host of other strategies that worked for some pregnancies, and not for others.
If you or someone you love suffers from HG, I highly recommend this book. There are also 52 tips, one per week, for dealing with pregnancy sickness that in and of themselves are worth the cost of this book, never mind the other chapters. Wishing all pregnant people an easy pregnancy and childbirth experience.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGriffin is one of the most emotionally brave and honest people I know of. She goes where most writers will not when writing about their personal lives and she never indulges in self-pity, despite the horrific suffering she has undergone. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who is plagued with a disorder that is not widely acknowledged, in the hope that they may find the strength and courage--as Griffin has done--to treat themselves and to seek what little help often exists from professionals. Enlightening and ultimately hopeful. Fantastic work!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNot an enjoyable read, whatsoever. The author almost seems to glorify her use of drugs while pregnant, and writes from an incredibly negative viewpoint. Would NOT recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI liked that the author elaborated on the emotional, spiritual, psychological factors that may affect HG. I like the hope that this book brings with the idea that HG can be healed or, at least, managed. The author provides a lot of resources. Reading her personal experiences was both interesting and helpful. I especially appreciated that the author was respectful about setting boundaries and talking about people's shortcomings. Admittedly, I've never personally been challenged with HG, but I have had friends who were. I will suggest this book in hopes that it might help them.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a useful book for all women! Whether you have experienced severe pregnancy sickness or not, Understanding Morning Sickness as a Gift can help you gain considerable insight into your own life that can lead to significant healing in many ways. In this engaging and personal story, the consistent theme that your emotional state manifests itself in your physical body can convince even those who have never suffered through HG that perfectionism, negative thoughts and unhealthy patterns of behavior may be affecting your quality of life right now.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI’ve seen a few reviews mentioned the negative place this author is coming from. If you knew HG for what it is, the suffering you endure, you would understand why she is coming from this place. Beautiful book and truly a glimpse into the life of someone who lived through HG (I suffered my entire pregnancy). Would recommend to anyone suffering from the PTSD of it or just simply wanting to feel less alone.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis powerful story of ups and down's struggling with HG is a MUST READ!! Jennifer has the incredible ability of processing, and turning a journey that would otherwise normally be doomed as a curse-into recognizing The "Perfect Gifts" in the midst of a storm

Format: KindleI wanted to read this book as I had Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) when I was pregnant with my daughter. Griffin’s book about HG brought back a lot of feelings, not just my memories but the somatic effects that I experienced. I wish I had this book when I was pregnant 9 years ago when the only information I could find were medical definitions about HG and message boards filled with women who were suffering. Ms. Griffin not only writes about her symptoms of HG, but also how HG affected her on a personal level with family, friends, and health professionals. The book reads like a memoir with the self-help aspect intertwined within her story. She repeats the healing modalities again at the end of her book so the reader can sit back and read the book without writing down the author’s experience of what helped her heal. This helped me, as a reader, to thoroughly immerse myself in the author’s experience.
Without getting into my own story I never had another child after having HG. The memories were too painful and I did not think I had the strength to do it again. After reading this book, I realized I did not have the supports that I needed at the right time. For instance, I did not think about having Doula until right before the birth. The thought of having a Doula whilst I was laying in bed all day from nausea seemed embarrassing to me. Knowing that I could have had support from my Doula early on would have been a tremendous help to me. Unfortunately a flaw of mine is that I do not like to ask others for help.
I think the biggest gift this book has given me was the realization that I have never told my story about surviving HG. I’ve told people bits and pieces. My husband witnessed some of it, and I had some eastern and western intervention who knew some of what I was going through. But as far as my whole story one long fluid story, I have never spoken it aloud nor have I written it down. Ms. Griffin’s book has shown me that even though I may not have been able to “heal” HG during my pregnancy, my body is craving to heal my relationship to HG, which may entail telling my story either to a friend, therapist, or my own personal journal. I’ve held unto it for too long.
I highly recommend this book to women who have HG, their friends and family, and even medical professionals who may not understand what women with HG go through. I also recommend it to women like me, who have been through it and may realize their healing journey is not over.
