4.3 out of 5 stars 6,856 ratings

A BRAND NEW STANDALONE DETECTIVE MYSTERY FROM #1 BEST-SELLING AUTHOR HELEN H. DURRANT

A man is shot dead and his body is dumped on the moors. His arm is stamped with the Chinese symbol for sorry.

There have been
five unsolved murders with the same hallmark. The police can’t find any motive or connection between the victims.

Bella Richards was close to the murdered man. She lives with her five-year-old son and has begun a new life in the local area. But although clearly grief-stricken, she is not telling the police everything she knows.

Detective Talbot Dyson wants his most trusted inspector on the case. But DI Matt Brindle is out of action. He was badly injured and his sergeant was killed in a criminal ambush. He is drawn into the investigation and must decide whether he wants to go to back to his old life.

What is the real connection between the victims and who will be next?

This is a detective mystery
full of twists and turns, with a stunning edge-of-your-seat ending.

If you like Angela Marsons, Rachel Abbott, Mel Sherratt, Ruth Rendell, or Mark Billingham you will enjoy this exciting new crime fiction writer.

About the Author

Helen sets her books in the area she has lived in for many years. The towns and villages that sit in the shelter of the Pennine hills. This is an area between two counties, Lancashire and Yorkshire, and between the city and the hills. It offers a rich mix of the industrial and the countryside and all the character therein.

Helen always planned to write crime novels. But until she retired from full-time work in a local further education college, it had to go on the back burner. Once she did retire - there was no excuse. She now writes full-time. Retirement proper will have to wait!

A really engrossing mystery where the danger slowly increases as the days/pages pass. Bella is a believable character right down to the things that made me angry. She is a woman with a dark backstory, hiding a life of secrets. Yet she expects the police to be able to solve a crime with no information (or false information). Matt is a great character because he is battling PTSD and pressures at home, yet his intuitive mind draws him back to solving mysteries even though he may not want to go back to work yet. His keen mind and investigative style are really what crack the case. At first I wanted to complain that there was no foundation laid for the perpetrator's identity to be known or guessed, but that's not really the case. There is more than one character in this story with a dual identity - making the ending more surprising! Very well written!y

This is a taut mystery from Ms Durant and the second one I read featuring detective Matt Brindle, of Brindle Hall. While Matt is the author’s only “aristocratic” hero I’ve seen so far, American readers will not only be bewildered by the British slang (some of it regional too) but they might also have to learn that the peerage isn’t the way Jane Austen would describe it and therefore mr. Brindle knows he’s not going to be Lord Brindle when his mother dies. He’s rather self conscious about living in a rambling mansion that I imagine looking like Downton Abbey but without its army of servants.
The other remarkable feature of the book is the villain. Every mystery, especially, must have a good villain and this one is suitably obsessive and understandable in a psychological way. His wife couldn’t live up to his standards of feminine perfection so he killed her. But still looking for the perfect woman he goes through several others who resembled her physically and tortures and kills them — frightfully believable for the reader. How he gets away with it so many times rings true. Suspicion falls on several suspects before Brindle knows his identity and readers don’t find out till the last chapter.

This is my one disappointment with the book — since we don’t know which suspect is the perp we lack an imaginative visual notion of the crimes. The book is exceptional in that we get to see the perp doing his dirty work but the author faced a tough choice in how much detail she could provide without giving the game away.

Just love these kind of stories , it will make you .want to get to the end, just to find out . Bella has her own set of problems losing Alan, than her son Olly, goes missing. Her world just stopped. She hides knowing things but she has to tells the police what she can, the police know she is lying, and they want to know why. Durrant gave just enough information to make one suspicious of a couple of characters but if you, like me, suspect them, you', too, will be wrong. She leads the reader on a merry chase. I wonder if she plans additional novels featuring Brindle, etal? I would definitely read them if she does. Brindle is a very sympathetic protagonist. He's smart, and capable, even though he carries baggage from both his personal and professional past. My only complaint is that Durrant didn't include a chapter letting us know how things turned out for Bella and Olly--the mother and child who were at the center of the story. Since she didn't seem to feel it was necessary to do so, I guess I'll just assume that all turned out well for them.

DI Matt Brindle is recovering from an explosion in which a fellow officer was killed. He suffers from PTSD and gets panic attacks. He has sworn, with his mother’s blessing, to not go back to the force. But then someone he knows is randomly murdered. A mark on the body links to several previous murders, but what is the connection? Matt is intrigued and go back to the job for a trial period.
This has the making of a good detective series.

Ex DI Matt has a privileged background but just wants to be a police He was blown up with his partner who did not survive.. A series killer gives his boss the opportunity to drag him back. He is teamed with Lily, young but smart.

The story is well written as expected of Helen Durrant. I'm over serial killers ans the gory details. The ending is sudden and the big reveal isn't the twist it could have been better.
