I don’t always care for age gap stories as they often devolve into glorified sexscapades of men seeking trophies to help keep them young or “daddy” stories, which in and of themselves are fine, they are just not my thing. However this one caught my eye, and while I will admit, when I read the description I was skeptical, I was intrigued enough to start reading it. After the first few pages I remained unconvinced as “Hypocritically Yours” by Hailey Faiman is so layered, so convoluted in its set-up I was unable to get past my own preconceived notions about what it was all about. Yet a few chapters in it magnetized me, like a fried Oreo stand to a child, so unavoidable was this book's pull it quickly became un-put-down-able.
Here, Faiman writes the story of Landry Aster and Tennessee Bradley, Landry being a sixty-two year old owner of an extremely successful investment firm. A highly respected and sought after businessman known as much for his family friendly company, and devotion to and care of his employees as his business acumen. A man however, whose home life sadly does not match his professional one. A man who is grappling with a disastrous marriage to a volatile and contemptuous woman, a situation he struggles to come to terms with knowing just how out of control his personal life has become.
And as he endeavours to make decisions about his future, decisions that he fears will greatly affect his three adult children, he encounters Tennessee, a young woman of twenty-three who reminds him of what he truly wants and who turns his life upside-down in ways he never before could have fathomed.
Tennessee on the otherhand, is a young single mother with a dark past, a past she has worked hard to move forward from. A woman determined to make a better life for herself and her toddler, and looking to become a part of the Aster Investments intern pool as a way to start a career and create the life she so desperately wants for her and her son.
What follows is an absolutely beautiful story. A soul touching tale of a deeply unhappy man longing for a second chance to find the love he has never really known but dreams of. And of a woman of quiet strength trying her best to overcome fear and uncertainty. Determined to make the best of an unexpected situation when the internship she expects turns into the job she hadn't dare hope for. All the while completely unaware of the chaos working for Landry has in store for her.
It is a heartwarming exploration of how love can strike when you least expect it and appear in forms you never before fathomed. Here, Faiman writes an exquisite story world, one full of extraordinarily complex and thoughtful characters. Here she pens a love story so unexpectedly raw and passionate, so intensely suspenseful and jolting, you will find yourself run through the gamut of emotions with every passing page, every passing chapter, leaving you breathless and deeply desiring more.
More importantly, this story will make you realize just how important it is to never let things go unchallenged out of fear or because it is easier than dealing with the fallout. Landry and Tennesse's soul connection is a tumultuous journey. One that will envelop you, bind you tightly in its emotional embrace until you lose your breath, terrified at what fate may befall them both. It is a rollercoaster of nail biting, heart pounding discord that will have you absolutely hating some characters while falling deeply in love with others.
Yes there is a forty year age gap between Landry and Tennessee. Yes there's is a future far more difficult and filled with far more uncertainty than a traditional couple. Yet you will nonetheless root for this couple fiercely. And you will fall, just as I have, irrevocably in love with this book, with these characters, with the honest and surprisingly poignant connection between Landry, Tennessee, Holden, and everyone else within. It is just. that. good. And is an easy 5-star, "must read" rating for me. And one of only two books this year I bought a hard copy of in addition to my kindle version.
