4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 32 ratings

Seventeen-year-old Hannah Atwell met Lieutenant Jake Burdock at a Fort Riley dance at the end of the Civil War. In spite their instant attraction, they are separated for long periods of time since Jake is assigned to duty at the frontier forts of western Kansas. Seldom able to visit with Hannah in person, they connect through letters. She knows he offers her his highest regard, but is that the same as love?

Two years later, she still harbors the desire to be an officer’s wife. While visiting Fort Riley with her father, she meets another lieutenant, Andrew Call. Personable and charming, she is flattered that he pursues her. Soon, she is convinced he loves her—and she has lost her heart to him. With his assurance that he desires for her to forever be a part of his life, she is sure a marriage proposal is imminent, and he will be able to fulfill her dreams.

An unexpected visitor at Fort Riley turns Hannah’s world upside-down. Her plans crumble around her. She must decide how to respond to what she learns, even if she is left heartbroken. Must she give up her dream, or will she end up with the man who will fulfill them?

repare to be taken back in time when the west was still immersed in trying to be tamed but not always successfully. Zina always pulls history into her stories which make them so interesting.

Hannah met and has been corresponding with Lt Jake Burdock and it built the attraction between the two. Unfortunately with all the unrest with the Indians and trying to settle them on the reservations, Jake was tied up a lot with his duties and was not able to visit Hannah as much as he wanted.

But when Lt Andrew Call steps in and tries to woo Hannah, it seems her affections may change.
You just never know what will happen!

A wonderful story that warms the heart and leaves you with a sigh!

The author has penned a sweet and heartwarming story filled with lots of interesting historical facts. While visiting one of the western forts, Hannah met Lt. Jake Burdock and they were instantly attracted to each other. Due to ongoing friction between the Army and the plains Indians, Jake was kept busy and had had little time to personally visit with Hannah so the couple had to be satisfied with writing to each other. Thus, enters Lt. Andrew Call who charms Hannah and tries to win her heart and devotion and succeeds for a time until his true nature shows itself. Now Hannah must choose between the two men. Who, oh Who will win her heart. Be sure to read this story to find out who she chooses to find her HEA. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

I’m excited to finally read the rest of Hannah’s story. The first installment is in Hannah’s Handkerchief. Jake and Hannah’s friendship is mostly by letter. I enjoyed the twist the author put into her story line.
It was nice to get a better inside look at the settling of Indian unrest. Looking back on history gives us a much fuller view of what happened. But settling free, independent, and often warring tribes was not an easy task. Many mistakes and broken promises took place on both sides. The author provides a lot of historical background, something I enjoy. There is mention of George Custer in this story, a name that many readers should recognize.

Hannah's Highest Regard is a very intersting read; full of historical information and facts. I loved how the title was incorporated into the story.
Hannah is smitten with Lt. Jake Burdock, a quartermaster dealing with the dissatisfied plains Indians. Their relationship is what we would call today a long distance one. Hannah had to settle for letters. Jake let it be known if someone garners her attention, he would step aside. This is exactly what seems to happen when Lt. Andrew Call enters the picture. So as to not spoil the ending of this delightful story, I will not divulge any more details but only reccommend this as a must read.

This is the 1st book I've read from Zina. I've seen her other books and I have some of them on my TBR pile, but I just haven't gotten around to them...yet!

I received this book as an ARC and was not persuaded to leave a positive review and with that being said: I am not a big fan of Civil War books, but I absolutely loved this book and the cover also held my interest! Zina writes beautiful and I felt like I was there with the characters.

I can't wait to start reading her Mail Order Brides books.

At first, I was bored with this book! I'm not into history or wars, but, it got very exciting when 2nd Lt. Andrew Call came in the picture! I'm afraid Hannah was very naive! I loved her and Jake, though! I highly recommend this book!

I've been excited to read more of of Hannah and Jake’s story. I always enjoy Zina's books and the way she is able to weave history into the story. You'll enjoy this sweet romance set in the West during the time of General Custer. You'll also enjoy the ups and downs of the relationship between Hannah and Jake.
