Hannah's Lieutenant: Atwell Kin Boxset Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 7 ratings

A boxset of the two halves of Hannah’s story.

Hannah’s Handkerchief

With her blonde hair and blue eyes, Hannah Atwell knows she is pretty—and she enjoys pretty things. She spent her life striving to be the perfect, obedient daughter of a Kansas farm family. Now she feels she is destined for something more than being a farmer’s wife living in a soddie.

At a party held at Fort Riley, Kansas, to celebrate the end of the Civil War, Hannah meets First Lieutenant Jake Burdock, who captures her heart. She impulsively offers him her handkerchief as a token of her regard. As her parents resist her involvement with the Army officer, she begins to question if always doing what she is told is to her advantage. Demands of Jake’s job and missed connections keep them apart. Only the letters they exchange keep them connected.

Hannah’s Highest Regard

Hannah stays in touch with 1st Lt. Jake Burdock through letters until they stop coming. While visiting the fort, she meets 2nd Lt. Andrew Call, aide to Fort Riley’s commander. She soon becomes intrigued, and he obviously intends to make her his. As Jake Burdock returns to the fort and events unfold, Hannah makes a startling discovery.

Will the warning from Hannah’s mother that Army officers amuse themselves with poor country girls but marry women from high society prove true? Will Hannah end up with one of the lieutenants? If so, which one?

I thoroughly enjoy Ms. Abbott's books and this set that contains two previously published books will not disappoint. The two stories relate events in the life of a young lady, Hannah, and her evolving relationship with Lt. Jake Burdock. As a Civil War history nerd, I thoroughly enjoyed reading the many accurate facts intertwined throughout the books.

    Book 1: Hannah's Handkerchief
Hannah loves all things beautiful. A tough thing for a poor farmer's daughter. You can only imagine how excited she is when invited to a dance celebrating the impending end of the Civil War. To her it doesn't matter that its a fundraider for medical supplies and care for the wounded soldiers. It is a FANCY dance, and she gets to wear a beautiful gown with all the glittery accessories.! Lt. Jake Burdock catches her eye, and after dancing together, both realize their is a strong attraction. She even gives him a beautiful handkerchief she has embroidered. Unfortunately, two problems stand in their way. Hannah is known as the "good daughter.' She almost always obeys her overly strict and rigid parents who believe she is still too young to court. They also do not want their daughter in a relationship with a soldier. Jake is stationed in the far reaches of the Kansas wilderness; an unforgiving and primitive setting. It is not a place to bring a wife, particularly one who wants the finer things of life. Both are tough issues to overcome. Will written correspondence between the two be enough for a relationship to develop?

    Book 2: Hannah's Highest Regard
I thought book one was hard to put down, but this was my favorite of the two. Hannah and Jake continue their correspondence and are now officially courting. He gives her a beautiful locket from a Bavarian jeweler as a tangible remembrance. Jake continues to carry the handkerchief she gave him everywhere. Rarely; however, do they get to spend time together. Jake's orders still have him miles away in the midst of conflicts with the Native Americans. (Ms. Abbott's description of the unrest associated with forcing Native Americans onto reservations and insisting they farm poor soil will grab your attention.) To compound this problem, Hannah has to deal with sibling and parental interference in her realtionship with her beau. Jake soon has competition for Hannah's affections, Lt Andrew Call. He is readily available to truly court her. Does her parents approve of this soldier? Will the bond Hannah and Jake have built over time be strong enough to withstand this intruder?

I loved this set, all of the history mixed with clean romance, Christian surprises, conflicts and solutions and several surprises.

Two wonderful stories published together that will bring a smile to your heart.

    Hannah's Handkerchief
Hannah was so excited. Whe and her cousin Kizzie had been invited to a dance that would celebrate the surrender of General Lee and the virtual end of the war with the Southern States. It would also raise money to help provide medical supplies and trained nurses to help the injured soldiers returning from war. She had just turned seventeen and she felt it was kind of like her coming out!
That is where she met Lt Jake Burdock and danced with him and there was an attraction. But would she see him again?
Zina Abbott has interwoven history into this tale which was so interesting. I don't often hear about what happened after the civil war and as the move west intensified. Hannah had always been the good daughter, trying to obey her parents, who were pretty stern at times. But she and Jake had a journey to take and I could not stop once I started on the first page.
A wonderful story that at times was difficult as these two try to find a love that will endure forever...

    Hannah's Highest Regard
Prepare to be taken back in time when the west was still immersed in trying to be tamed but not always successfully. Zina always pulls history into her stories which make them so interesting.
Hannah met and has been corresponding with Lt Jake Burdock and it built the attraction between the two. Unfortunately with all the unrest with the Indians and trying to settle them on the reservations, Jake was tied up a lot with his duties and was not able to visit Hannah as much as he wanted.
But when Lt Andrew Call steps in and tries to woo Hannah, it seems her affections may change.
You just never know what will happen!
A wonderful story that warms the heart and leaves you with a sigh!

I am never disappointed in Zina's stories. The story of Hannah had me drawn in from the very beginning. I love how Zina does her research on places, people and things. And her characters are always so wonderful. I always feel for them.

I was given an ARC of this set but not required to give an postive review.
