About the author

Folks say you should write what you know. That’s damned good advice, so I write about ordinary Midwesterners making an extraordinary mess of things. Hey- if the flannel fits…
Oh, one more thing. “Ordinary” totally includes vampires, werewolves, zombies, witches, shapeshifters, aliens and more!

- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have just finished reading this excellent Anthology. The stories are, each of them, captivating and intriguing. I have to admit I shed a tear or two whilst reading parts, but in a good way, and rather cathartic (again, in a very good way) during this busy (busy) Season. Bravo to you, authors, each and every one of you, for a fine presentation of the written word. There was not a slip up to be had, and not a one of you took the easy way out with sad Holiday scenes or mournful reminisces. It was simply a pleasant, fine collection of stories, with "just enough" of everything (pun intended!). From the first page to the last, there is the sense of the Holiday spirit, and the calm that comes from reading well written stories that really do take you "somewhere else", for just a bit.
I must say, as well, that this book contains the only Forward I know of (and I ALWAYS read the Forward) that is as well thought out as the book itself. Forwards are generally so BLAND, like a grocery list for a dull, uninspiring dinner party one would rather not even attend. But not this one! It spoke to the concept of this Anthology, and how it is that these authors united across time zones, finding time and creative energy despite busy schedules, their dedication being in itself a gift to Literacy, and an example of how people across the globe can work together for the better good. And THAT is what this marvelous little collection of short stories is all about; the better good, that being World Literacy. Inasmuch as proceeds go to support The World Literacy Foundation, this is a book that truly speaks to the meaning of "Peace on Earth", because surely it is by the written word that we can, some day, find that measure of World Peace, and perfect Joy, that we all deserve.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis beautifully conceived and written anthology, edited by Andrew Christie under the auspices of Kwarts Publishers, represents authors from 20 countries throughout the globe. Nonetheless, some of the most fascinating stories are out of Christie's own South Africa, focusing a lens on the daily life of a country that is somewhat unfamiliar to many of us. Many of the stories are served up with generous helpings of Urdu, Afrikaans, Sesotho, and urban slang. Christie points out in his wry preface that the literacy rate in South Africa is "shamefully low," and Happy Holidays packs a double punch against illiteracy by giving space to South African writers and donating the proceeds of the book to the World Literacy Foundation.

My main concern with anthologies is that all the writers are obviously different and so it is difficult to ‘get into’. But the Happy Holidays Anthology was a pleasant read and I liked almost all the stories. I particularly enjoyed reading stories that showed how different countries spend the holiday period.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseTrue Christmas spirit. Love it when so many authors can come together to produce such a fantastic anthology. Well worth a read! Great Christmas present.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2017Format: KindleI was looking forward to reading Happy Holidays, not just because I was a contributing author, and not just because it is in aid of such a worthy cause, but because the anthology included works by some exciting authors.
The content doesn't disappoint. I was particularly looking forward to reading Scott Burtness, whose Monsters in the Midwest series I had recently devoured with much interest (and I highly recommend checking out the series) and Sian B Claven, whose debut Novel Ensnared was a truly chilling read (and another recommendation). There is a whole host of fun and humorous short stories included which will make for fun light reads over Christmas or quite frankly any occasion.
However, by buying and enjoying this book, you'll not only be entertaining yourself, but also helping others to gain the gift of literacy, something that can quite, literally (pun intended) change lives for the better. Literacy is the quickest route out of poverty for many people around the world, so by sharing in the laughter which is abundant in this anthology, you can also brighten up the world, just a little bit.
