About the author
Hello, and welcome to my author page. In it, you will learn a little about the background to my stories.
GREAT NEWS!
THE BUTTERFLY GIRL, Book 11 in my Devonshire series, is now available to pre-order! It's another heart-wrenching tale based on true events during the Plymouth Blitz. This story is particularly close to my heart as it is partly inspired by the many stories my mother related about when she trained as a nurse in London during the war.
For those of you who are new to my books, each is a stand-alone, but you will enjoy them most if they are read in order as there are threads that link them together. The first in the series is THE HARBOUR MASTER'S DAUGHTER, based on the history of Morwellham Quay, once the greatest copper port in the whole of Queen Victoria's Empire. Four more Victorian tales follow, mainly set on the wilds of Dartmoor, illustrating different aspects of the harsh life on the moor, from farming, mining and quarrying, to the little known gunpowder factory and the infamous prison. A Box Set is available to download of Books 1-5, the Victorian tales.
A second Box Set of Books 6-10 is also now available to download, covering both world wars and into the 1950s, in which we see how the ugly tentacles of war reach way beyond the end of the conflicts. There are two WW1 titles, showing how sleepy Devon was just as involved as anywhere. Then we jump forward to the 1950s with two stories of the legacy of war, before popping back to the WW2 years with Book 10, THE CONVENT GIRL. The action actually begins in a convent in Ireland, based on my own mother's childhood there - and yes, she led a fascinating life - before moving to Plymouth where we see the build-up to hostilities through the eyes of the heroine. What will happen to her when war breaks out and Plymouth is devastated by the Blitz?
And don't forget my four London and Kent sagas, of which THE STREET OF BROKEN DREAMS won SAGA OF THE YEAR in the prestigious RNA Awards 2020, so I can officially call myself an award-winning author! It’s the summer of 1945 and WW2 is drawing to a close. But for some it can never end. Set in Battersea, London, where I myself lived as a small child, it's another gripping, powerful drama, quite dark in places. I believe that, like all my novels, it will tug at your heartstrings.
Whichever of my books you choose to read, I do hope you enjoy them! So why not take a look at my website for more details? I'm sure you will discover many hours of engrossing reading!

- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2021I thought that the story was well thought out and presented clearly with multiple examples given as to how conclusions were developed. This made the story a bit longer which possibly seemed too long for some readers. Every time that I thought that the author gave us more examples than needed, the story twisted in a way that made all the examples quite relevant. A couple of times I found it very difficult to continue reading because you could see the Harbor Master's Daughter was probably going to find herself in another difficult situation that was probably going to make her and her family's situation even worse. This was an excellent story with multiple morals contained within the storyline which I found very well done.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2023After finally reading through the whole book (almost stopped after a few chapters) for which I kept on based on the glowing reviews (and hoping things would get better), my thoughts are this: It was well-written in terms of lack of errors and quality grammar. Had to skim over some of the descriptions that went on and on, particularly of the characters' emotional responses. I mean, after awhile, it was same old same old. Basically it is a higher class Harlequin romance. However, obviously a lot of people are really in to this genre based on the reviews. Just not my bag. For anyone who feels the same, would not recommend.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2023I very much enjoyed reading this book. I learned a lot about the various vessels and their importance in days long past. I was unfamiliar with many words, but enjoyed learning their meanings. All this in addition to reading a very interesting story with unexpected turns and twists.

Absolutely brilliantly written with clever twists and turns. A beautiful story with a not so predictable plot. Will read the next one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A perfectly wonderful historical saga
I love a strong heroine, and Rebecca Westbrook is exactly that. Compulsive, maybe foolhardy even, but with a courage that was unusual for its time and I really enjoyed her story.
As with any historical saga, life throws blow after blow at Rebecca, but there is light too, in the love of family and the support of good friends. The first tragedy strikes when she is waiting to turn twenty-one so she can marry her sweetheart Tom, and life throws her into the path of ship owner and captain, Adam Bradley.
It is hard to say much more about the story without introducing spoilers, but it is perfectly woven, and mid Victorian Morwellham portrayed so wonderfully I felt I was there. The sense of community, the privations, the warmth, all perfectly placed within the social history of the time. A wonderful read for fans of historical fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moving and Emotional
I love Tania's books; you always know you're going to get richly drawn characters, full of depth and shade, and The Harbour Master's Daughter didn't disappoint. Having lived close to the area almost all my life, and spent a lot of time at Morwellham, it was lovely to read the descriptions and picture it all as I read... And if I hadn't, I'd want to go there! The story is by turns heart-breaking and spirit-lifting, and the descriptions of the poverty and danger are as poignant as ever - you're under no illusions as to the hardships and the struggle of the people who lived and worked in the harbour and the mines. Beautiful romantic touches bring light and life to the tale, and I look forward to continuing with the series.
