Shatter (Hard Hit Book 4) Kindle Edition
One man’s trash…
He’s hockey’s bad boy. Alex’s reputation as one of the meanest defensemen in the league is nothing compared to his notoriety off the ice. After spending too much time and energy chasing someone who’d never feel the same, Alex is through playing games. He’s content with his self-indulgent nights of alcohol and strange men.
Is another man’s treasure.
His entire life Gannon has toed the line, doing his best to keep from becoming a burden to his older brother who ended up saddled with him way too young. Now Gannon has his sights set on Alex, and he’ll stop at nothing to have him. Including offering Alex something he can’t resist. One night. No strings.
Alex is exactly the brand of crazy Gannon’s been searching for.
From the beginning, nothing goes as planned between Alex and Gannon, but neither man can stay away. When a secret from Gannon’s past floats to the surface, Alex has to choose. Will he fight one last time or let life shatter him again?

- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2016Alex and Gannon are so great! I absolutely loved them, from the very beginning when Alex meets Gannon and 'needs' to leave immediately. Gannon offers to give him a ride, since he is going out anyway. Only to confess he was not actually going anywhere!
Alex is the perfect kind of possessive. He is actually afraid of his possessiveness because in his past it has led him into stalker territory. I felt myself hoping that Alex would feel safe and trusting of Gannon and not need the stalker thing, but...that's not Alex. He is more of a 'trust but verify' kind of guy. But he makes it seem so HOT!
Gannon is protected by those around him, but he actually doesn't need protection. He can certainly protect himself, and has done so in the past. I loved the mystery surrounding Gannon, and enjoyed the way the story concluded. Charity Parkerson is a great storyteller, and these characters in this series have all been interesting and multi-faceted. Could not wait for the next book, read it immediately.

I love this series, and I think it's getting better with each book.
This is a series of novellas, therefore the books are short. Given the length of the books, the character development is great, but there's only so much that can be fitted into a novella.
If you don't enjoy messed up, in some instances downright crazy (*cough* Alex) characters, or novellas, then these books probably won't be for you.
I loved Gannon, and by the end of Shatter I began to like Alex too. At first I struggled to understand why Gannon would want to be with someone who had acted with his ex (Ryker) just like Gannon's ex (Seb), but it became apparent that the motivation/reasons for Alex's previous behaviour were not relevant to his relationship with Gannon. Doesn't excuse it, but did explain it somewhat.
I can't wait for Andrei's story next. I loved him in this story and I'm really excited to get to know him better in Crush.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2015Loved this book. Gannon and Alex were so hot together. I've read every book in this series and I've loved them all. Can't wait for the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2015I'm loving this series more with each installment. In Shatter we have Alex and Gannon's story. Alex is the bad boy of the hockey scene and seems to be more than a little crazy. Gannon is the sweet and innocent younger brother of mega-agent Kieran Steele. But things are not always what they seem. Both of these men know it's so hard to find someone to love that will look beyond the surface to see the truth of the person deep inside.
I always love Charity's work. At the beginning of this series I truly thought Ryker was going to be my favorite character. Gannon has me questioning that now. As always, Charity weaves a tale that has it all... Strong, but flawed, men struggling to find that one person to love and be loved by, hot & sexy scenes, characters that are real enough you may find yourself wondering "What would Alex do?" in your daily life, a bit of mystery, and well.... let's just say that I laughed, I cursed, and I cried...
So far, Shatter is my favorite of the series and I can't wait to see what happens next in the Hard Hit series!
Here are two of my favorite lines in the book.
"Beautiful innocence was his biggest weakness." & "You smell like dreams. Like the kind I hate waking up from."
I was a beta-reader for this title. I also purchased it myself for my personal collection. All opinions are true, honest, and completely my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2015I bought this book for free because of a holiday promotion. I figured since it was being offered as a standalone, it was fine if I hadn't read the others. Boy was I wrong! You know that horrible nightmare where you're onstage in a play but you don't know your lines or any of the other characters or the plot -- yeah, this book. I seriously had no context most of the time and finally gave up at 70%. Ack, they're so tortured ALL THE TIME, but I had no idea why!
I'm giving it three stars, because I'm the one who tried a Book 4 as a standalone, so I'm partly to blame. Okay, so Alex plays professional hockey. He's supposed to be a bad ass although he doesn't come across that way in the book. He's gentle and loving and lost. But not a real bad ass. Anyway, it seems like maybe he stalked his former boyfriend? I get the sense that's the case from other reviews, but honestly I had no idea what his damage was. Then there's Gannon who's twenty and has a stalker ex-boyfriend Seb. I think. And maybe he was abusive? I dunno. There's random threatening texts that seem over the top, so I get that Seb is bad news. Gannon never feels twenty to me or like a Harvard student at all. He seems the same age as Alex, and this kind of drove me nuts. I couldn't really get a sense of other of them other than they felt damaged. And they never seemed to get to know each other much before being in love.
The opening chapter confused me too. It said "Five months earlier..." but then we never catch up to present day. It just keeps going chronologically. Alex and Gannon meet through Gannon's brother, but there's no real dialogue between them; they're just suddenly in a car together for a one night stand. The next thing I know, even though they've only hooked up a few times, they're in love and in a committed relationship via text. Huh? And why would a professional hockey player think this kid has way more money and status than him? He's a professional, famous athlete. Nevermind that he's an openly gay hockey player and that seems to have no ramifications at all. Hell, I didn't even know if he was openly gay until 50%.
Sigh. I finally just stopped reading at 70%. I guess these characters and their scenarios were set up in other books? But without that, I felt totally lost. Honestly, so little of it felt believable, I'm not sure it would have worked even if I had read the others. I never, ever understood their relationship or why they were with each other (besides them both being hot.) Oh well. My advice to fellow readers, start at the beginning of this series. These books aren't standalone novels.

These characters seemed too feminine for me. The first 3 books in the series were better. Disappointing!!
