Hard to Handle: An enemies to lovers, second chance, hockey romance (The Play Hard Series (The Kincade Sisters) Book 1) Kindle Edition
At first, the request seemed simple—sign a new athlete to the agency.
Then I found out the new athlete was none other than the most wanted man in hockey today: Hunter Maddox.
Gifted. Sexy. At the top of his game. And the only man who has ever broken my heart.
If signing him will help save our family business, I’ll swallow my pride and do what’s asked.
But when it becomes clear his uncharacteristic antics off the ice are a hint of something deeper, keeping things strictly professional between us becomes more than complicated. But I know better than to cross that line.
I’ll never date a client. Not even for him.
***
Win the Stanley Cup and do it before time runs out.
Not a small feat, but it’s what’s motivated me since the start of my career.
And time is running out.
Enter Dekker Kincade.
Feisty. Dogged. Damn gorgeous. The one I let get away.
I have no idea why she’s traveling with the team, but hell if resisting her is going to be easy.
But I have a job to do, and I refuse to lose sight of that end game. Even if she confuses me. Even if she sees parts of me I’ve hidden from the world.
I can’t lose focus. Not even for her.

About the author

New York Times Bestselling author K. Bromberg writes contemporary romance novels that contain a mixture of sweet, emotional, a whole lot of sexy, and a little bit of real. She likes to write strong heroines and damaged heroes, who we love to hate but can’t help to love.
A mom of three, she plots her novels in between school runs, sports practices, and figuring out how to navigate parenting teenagers (send more wine!). More often than not, she does all of this with her laptop in tow, and her mind daydreaming of the current hero she is writing.
Since publishing her first book on a whim in 2013, Kristy has sold over two million copies of her books across twenty different countries and has landed on the New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal Bestsellers lists over thirty times. Her Driven trilogy has been adapted for film and is available on the streaming platform Passionflix as well as Amazon.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHard to Handle is a moving love story between two characters who are both very vulnerable and strong. Dekker and Hunter each lost someone very important as teens. Dekker's mother died suddenly and Hunter's brother was paralyzed in an accident. Both are still in a lot of pain and frightened about opening up to getting hurt. The story kicks off when Dekker, a sports agent, is sent to recruit Hunter, an NFL player, as a new client. As a result of an explosive affair previously, the couple already know each other. While Dekker's surface goal is to win a contract, she sees that Hunter is troubled and helps the human he is before the athlete everyone wants. This book balances a pro hockey storyline with touching moments as Dekker helps a burned out player rediscover his joy in the sport and in life. There is also sensitive treatment of the ongoing grief and guilt experienced by the people responsible for the ongoing care of a severely disabled person. Plus, there's a very hot romance.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI was so excited for another Bromberg book. I really loved Hunter and Dekker's stories. Dekker's especially. Loved the relationship she had with her father and her sisters. LOVED the updates/statuses.
I'm never very articulate when it comes to in depth reviews. The character build up and depth-I love it. I always love seeing the relationships they form with their families, their friends, co-workers, teammates, etc. You really feel a connection with the characters in Kristy's books. There's always something relatable that you can say, hey-they could totally hang with me and my friends. I love that about her books.
The ONLY reason I didn't give this 5 stars--THE NAMES!!! I know Kristy is always on the lookout for some cool, good names, which is fine. I don't have any issues with the names independently. But there were times where I really had to think who was who. Dekker kept throwing me as a guy. That was just me I'm sure, but it bothered me through the beginning of the characters being established (in mind). I just felt she was trying too hard to be unique (SORRY KRISTY!! I LOVE YOU!!!)
And yet again, another of her books brought tears to my eyes. I hate you/love you for that.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchasePERFECTION, from beginning to end!!
Once again Kristy has left me in total awe of her ability to weave a story that not only captures your heart but leaves a little piece of the story with you!! Hard to Handle will not only steal your breath but leave you needing more! The feels. The emotions. The angst! Heartbreaking at times but just so quintessential Bromberg that you know you will feel sated and your heart full!
Hard to Handle is a sports romance with a bit of a twist. It starts with the Kincade sisters meeting with their dad to discuss the family business, or lack thereof. After having the competition steal clients from Kincade Sports Management it is time to act to save the business. Divvying up the prospective new clients everything is rolling along until it gets to Dekker. When Dekker has a bomb dropped in her lap. Her Dad assigns her to recruit Hunter Maddox!! The same Hunter Maddox she has history with. The man that broke her heart 3 years earlier that left her walking away from him. But Dekker pulls on her big girl panties and reluctantly accepts the assignment.
There is so much I loved Dekker’s character! She is the oldest of four Kincade sisters, gorgeous, full of sass, could give as good as she gets and dedicated to the family business. Even with the tough exterior at times she at times wears her heart on her sleeve. So how she will she protect her heart when she is around Hunter?
Now let us talk Hunter Maddox. Cocky, alpha, chiseled, with a smirky smile that melts panties. He is a hockey god on ice, two-time MVP, at the top of his game, Captain of his team, breaking records, leading his team on their way to win the Stanley Cup. Yet, in spite of all of his accolades, he is a man with a temper, a man who is losing focus, a man who has the weight of the world on his shoulders. Problem is he that while it is evident to teammates and staff that something is going on, he does not see it.
Hunter:
“All man. All arrogance, with a hint of boy beneath the surface who’s living out his dream.”
Then Dekker shows up to travel with the team. She there to check up on her other client and figure out what is going on with Hunter. To break through the barrier that has him spinning so out of control and how to reel him in. Needless to say, it leaves Hunter not only confused but stumped why she is there. And you know it is not going to take long for Hunter to find her. And find her he does at the aftergame hangout. Sitting at the far end of the bar from him talking with one of her clients. Yep, you know exactly how this is going down. Cornering Dekker for a little tit for tat...
the fun begins.
Dekker:
“She’s elegant but feisty, gorgeous but unassuming, composed but so damn infuriating…
and nothing if not all business.”
Now that the inevitable has happened Dekker struggles with being present and professional while dealing with unresolved feeling she has for Hunter. What makes it harder is the aura that surrounds Hunter with sadness. Though the sexual tension is obvious neither let their guard down… at least not until they are back at the hotel. When a quick tryst on the way up the elevator ends with a sudden rebuff of Dekker with Hunter walking away this time. Payback’s a biotch!
Still reeling from the elevator incident Dekker continues her plan to befriend Hunter. Attempting to figure out how she can get through to him so he can find some peace again. Making this even more difficult was the conflict between her true feelings and being professional. How could she help Hunter but still maintain her role as a recruiting sports agent? Especial when they are like freaking dynamite together!!
This is an absolute smoking hot second chance romance. Filled with lots of heat and surprises.
Plus a super satisfying and emotional double Epilogue.
#Sorrynotsorry #Colton #Jack but Hunter is my #1 Bromberg BBF!!
Definitely ONE CLICK this one!!
“Giving half a heart is akin to giving someone a broken heart…so give them your whole one instead.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Coup de coeur

5.0 out of 5 stars Crikey! This is one great read. Wish I could give it more than 5.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHunter is the star ice hockey captain known for his fantastic talent but for some reason he seems to have gone off the boil and he is getting a lot of stick from his team, the press and his agent. Dekker is an agent for her fathers company and she and Hunter had a secret affair that was explosive and when she started to feel more she broke off with him. He didnt try to chase her. She is now tasked with trying to sign him up and follows the teams matches with the cover she is seeing her own sign ups. Hunter is a mess, he is sick of his fathers text telling him he is no good after a game, the stress of his brother close to dying and he feels lost. Dekker starts to build him up and tries to understand whats wrong but he is a hard nut to crack. They have a night together and afterwards he is quite sharp with her. She walks away knowing that she is in love with him. Hunter for all his fame is lonely and when things get to much he goes to her. Lovely, lovely story. One of the best romances I have read in a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for Hard to Handle by K. Bromberg
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt was an amazing read for the first book in a series. It's such an amazing storyline. It reads beautifully. Lots of feels in this book. Issues of survivor's guilt, loss of a parent guilt, guilt of not performing at your best, and just being so hard on yourself. Love the trope of lovers to friends but more importantly second chance at love. Dekker is such a badass agent but has so many feelings for Hunter. Hunter is just a mess of feelings. Love that Dekker was able to get the stick out his you know what. They are perfect for each other. Can't wait for the next installment of the Kincade sisters.

Review:
Hard to Handle is a enemies to lovers and second chance romance in one. There is great banter, hot and steamy moments, and lots of depth and character development. Everything you know we'll have in a K. Bromberg novel.
What is this book about:
This book is about hockey star Hunter, and sport agent Dekker. They had a fling in the past that ended abruptly when Dekker walked away. Forward a few years later Dekker's father, the owner of the agency asks Dekker to bring in a client. And ofcourse that client just had to be Hunter. Dekkers hopes that this time she will be able to keep things professional and not fall for him, perhaps that their attraction towards each other has died out. That ofcourse isn't the case. Their attractions and spark is as alive as ever.
Both Hunter and Dekkers are struggling to overcome their anxieties and past. The question is if by doing that they can grow together or grow even further apart.
What did I like/love:
I love the depth Kristy infuses into her stories. I love how she shows that it's not just woman that struggle with anxiety and stuff but men as well. She all handles is very realistically and while Hunter could be a real *sshole, I couldn't help but feel for him. My heart broke over how he was ( and is being) treated and how he thinks and feels about himself. When he showed what drove him to his decisions and what made him who he is, just broke my heart.
Dekker annoyed me at times because I felt like allot could have been avoided. She caused most of her pain herself by her actions and assumptions. The reason I think it hit me most is because I am like that as well. It was great for her to realize that and grow from there. The fear of being hurt shouldn't keep you from living and loving. I loved that message.
As always the world building was good and there where great supporting characters.
