- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2024My mum evacuated from Hastings in 1941 or 1942. She never talked much about her experiences during her time in Hastings and then Bath during the war. I was born in Bath but my mum wanted to go back to Hastings as soon as it was safe. The pictures and stories of the bombed areas are still in my mind as my mates and I used to play in the bombed out buildings. St Leonard's Parish Church was my mums church andI was baptized in the temporary church hall just up the hill from the bombed out one. Got to see the rebuilt church on one of my wife's and my visits to St. Leonard's.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you love Hastings and are interested in its past
Well researched, well written. An insight into a town getting by under appalling circumstances and food for thought regarding what's going on in some regions of the world today. If you love Hastings and are interested in its past, this book, and its sequel are essential reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting read for a local
Having lived in Hastings as a very young child during the war, I found the book interesting and well written but it does draw heavily on previously published material and in some cases almost word for word from 'Hastings and St Leonards in the Front Line', published just after the war, and of which I have a copy so, to me, only worth three stars.
