Hat Trick: A Reverse Grumpy/Sunshine Hockey Romance (Blades Hockey Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 1,771 ratings

The NHL's most charming player is ready to score a hat trick on and off the ice...

As the star forward for the Boston Blades, I’ve earned a reputation for no-strings attached hookups and a mean slapshot that has all the ladies purring -- but it’s never been the one woman I want to see all fired up and ready to score.

Boston’s own Ice Queen Gwen James has had my emotions all tangled up for years. I’ve played the games. I’ve sat on the sidelines.

No matter her reasons, I’m done being benched.

When she approaches me for a second chance, I accept on one condition: she’s got to prove she’s all in.

No kissing. No hooking up.

It just might kill me to keep my hands to myself, but it’s time Gwen knows what it’s like to beg.

At the end of the day, I play to win, and I want what no other man has ever had…her heart.

HAT TRICK is a reverse age gap/grumpy sunshine romance with major he falls first vibes. It's the third book in the Blades Hockey series but can be read as a complete standalone. If you like hot as puck heroes who are all in, then Hat Trick will definitely be your jam.

Maria Luis does it in spades or should I say hockey sticks and goalie masks and penalty boxes and blue lines!! I love the Blades Hockey series just as much as I love her other beloved series NOLA Heart.

Marshall Hunt and Gwen James have been dancing around each other for quite a while now but Gwen is pricklier than a porcupine or has been in the previous books but is trying to mend her ways a little but not for Marshall. It finally comes to a head and that is when Marshall finally calls it, "I'm done, Gwen. We've been doing this for years now. Me chasing you, you pullin' away....I done watching you flit from douchebag to douchebag without ever once looking at me. Really looking at me." It is a raw moment in the story and that is in chapter 3 and it just gets better and better from there. These characters are familiar but yet not because now they have the spotlight shown on them and it is wonderful. Maria knows how to build a story around characters that drive the plot and make you feel compelled to read on and on into the wee hours of the morning to finish the book (ok, that's what I did) but it was so worth it because the story is engaging and enthralling and captivating! There is a little bit of funny banter and steam but also moments that you just want to tell Gwen's mother to shut up and go sit in a corner (she has done a number on Gwen's mind). It is because of Gwen's mother that she has never wanted to settle down and keeps flitting from douchebag to douchebag. But in the end it is about two wonderful characters finding their HEA and yes, they do, BIG time! I won't tell you how it happens or how they reach each other in the end but it glorious!!

I highly recommend this book to anyone whether you have read Maria Luis' stories in the past or not, this is a great read!!

I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.

    Bravo Maria! Bravo!!

I’ve been very impressed with the Boston Blades series so far. The stories are well written with good character development and they read at a great pace. Marshall & Gwen were a fun couple, easy to like, with great flaws even though they appeared to have it all. Would recommend

Marshall Hunt has been pursuing Gwen James for years, from all the way back in college and into his NHL career with the Blades, seeing past her cold, hard exterior to the real Gwen beneath. But it’s not until he finally gives up and tells Gwen he's done that Gwen shows interest in him. She’s made great strides in becoming a “new and improved” Gwen and has cultivated a couple of terrific female friendships, but it's relationships with men that are still an issue. And really, it’s no wonder, with her mother’s brainwashing that women are out to steal your man and your man will always leave. Gwen doesn’t have a problem with men, per se, because she’s had lots of surface relationships (the Ice Queen could just as easily earn the title of One Night Stand Queen) yet she's never let a man anywhere near her heart. But Hunt won’t settle for anything less. Yes, he wants Gwen, but what he wants above all else is her heart.

After reading the other books in the Blades series, I was tickled to read Hunt and Gwen’s story. We saw a good bit of Gwen in the previous books and, well, she wasn’t the nicest person. Okay, truthfully, she was a cold-hearted witch with a capital B. A heroine in need of redemption is a rare thing in romance novels, but Gwen has to be the worst in need of redeeming that I’ve ever seen. Her desire to change and become a better person was refreshing, and she gets her redemption in spectacular fashion, gorging on crow along the way. Ms. Luis flips the romance stereotype on its head with the heroine doing the pursuing and wooing after the hero finally gives up. This, of course, makes for some poignant but hilarious reading!

It was clear that Gwen and Hunt had a history and there was a lot of tension just below the surface, especially at the beginning of this story. And the middle of the story. And up until the end of the story. Yeah, so there’s all kinds of tension between these two and at times I felt sorry for one or the other, then I wanted to shake somebody, then I was laughing out loud, then my heart would feel a tug, and the cycle repeated. The push and pull of their relationship was delicious fun and their story was an exquisite treat to read. I completely adored these characters and was all in, desperate to see their relationship finally work out. Ms. Luis granted my wish, giving Gwen and Hunt their happily ever after, and it was glorious! With just the right amounts of humor, angst and smexy, Ms. Luis scored her own literary hat trick with this book! Gwen and Hunt's story is a phenomenal read, so run to the 1-Click Button without delay.

3.5 Short review. Third book in the series but the first book that I have read. Marshall is a very well written book boyfriend, he wants a relationship with Gwen and has been pursuing her for six years. He finally decides after being reject by her again that he's done pursuing her and plans on moving on with his life this jolts Gwen into realizing that she has been taking Marshall for grant all this time.

*mini spoiler*My favorite part was when Gwen asks Marshall out and he rejects her after years of being rejected it would have been wrong if Marshall had said yes. I liked that Marshall made Gwen prove that she wanted a relationship with him and didn't just want him because he was done chasing her. *end of spoiler*

I felt the ending was rushed and would have liked if it was fleshed out a little bit more.

My perception of Gwen has changed since book 1. I no longer see her as the mean girl and can relate to her. That’s one thing that I love about Maria’s characters, they are so relatable. We learn so much about Gwen and Marshall and what their childhood’s were like. These two have such great chemistry and it was fun to listen to their story unfold. I can’t wait to listen to the next book.

Another great read for an amazing series. Love these characters, and I tell you they are characters. Full of laughter, friendships and love. You gotta feel for Gwen with her screwed up family. Marshall is full of feels too. He is funny, empathetic to Gwen and loves like no other. Those sexy times are hot. Can't wait for the next installment of Blades Hockey.

I have wanted to read Gwen’s story from the very beginning and then adding Hunt into the mix - genius!

Gwen is the ultimate sweetheart hiding behind an icy facade and I loved watching her journey throughout the book.

Hunt was everything I hoped for and more. His background makes a lot of sense as to why he acted the way he did.

Excited to read Holly’s story now

This book was heartbreaking with the missed opportunities in life for both of them. Both had sad pasts even though one was well off & the other not. They sizzled every time they were around one another & their drama increases as outside interference plays against them. I enjoyed their passion.
