From the Author
Prohibition (1920 -1933) laws were harsh in the United States when compared to Canada. In Canada, it was legal to produce and export spirits but not to drink them. In the U.S., liquor was not allowed to be produced let alone sold, laying the groundwork for the smuggling or "rum-running" of booze. After the WWI, there was a dramatic increase in illegal drinking establishments known as "speakeasies" or "blind pigs" which were often found in hidden sections of legitimate businesses such as the local barbershop. The Ontario Temperance Act was passed in 1916 making the whole province dry. Ontario legalized liquor in 1928, but counties were able to vote to stay "dry" in municipal voting. The town of Uxbridge was dry until 1974. Newmarket and Aurora voted to go dry on January 3rd, 1910 due to the efforts of the local WCTU. It wasn't until the 1950's the Temperance League's influence began to wane, and Newmarket voted to go "wet" in 1957.

About the author

Maighread MacKay is a Canadian Author. The gorgeous Province of Ontario sets the stage for all her novels.
Do you ever wonder about the riddles of our vast universe? Questions. Lots of questions about the reality of our cosmos. What about parallel universes? Do they exist and what if they did? Does the Earth have portals so that we could visit them? What about ghosts and spirits... are they real? Can we communicate with them? Why are they still here?
With a nod to the writings of Robert Schwartz, "Your Soul's Plan" and Neal Donald Walsch, "Conversations with God", I weave tales of Visionary Fiction for both children and adults asking questions such as - How would a person react when something unexpected and out of their comfort zone happens? Whether nine or ninety, I hope readers will join me in diving down the rabbit hole to discover where the white rabbit may lead!
What is Visionary Fiction:
Visionary Fiction is a literary style that weaves threads of fantasy into a depiction of everyday life. Its heroes aren’t fairies or sorcerers, they’re ordinary people — whose lives happen to butt up against the extraordinary.
Besides telling a good story, the genre enlightens and encourages readers to expand their awareness of greater possibilities. It helps them see the world in a new light and recognize dimensions of reality commonly ignored.
Embracing spiritual and esoteric wisdom, it makes it relevant for our modern life. Gems of this spiritual wisdom are brought forth in story form so that readers can experience the wisdom from within themselves. The story oftentimes uses reincarnation, dreams, visions, paranormal events, psychic abilities, and other metaphysical plot devices.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2022First of all, I was immediately invested in the story by the way it started with a unique perspective. A story from the angle of the actual ghost? Brilliant. Not only that, but it was also a unique depiction of a ghost/spirit. It made for some fun, very likeable characters. The mystery was well written, with clues coming back into play in further chapters. It had me invested in the outcome. I read it over multiple plane trips. Perfect cozy mystery to take my mind off things :) Loved it!

The Haunting of Hawk’s Ridge Hall by Maighread MacKay is a delightful mystery that has a 1920s aesthetic with ghosts, charm, and an abandoned house. Eve is excited at the new opportunities coming her way after she and her sister are gifted an abandoned mansion where strange noises and odd lights have been seen during the night. These have given the mansion a reputation for being haunted. Eve is eager to put her contractor know-how to work and bring the house back to its past beauty by converting it into a unique blend of B&B and museum. As she sets her plans for restoration in motion, she quickly becomes frustrated as the site is plagued with one accident after another. Determined to get to the bottom of it and beginning to fear for her safety, Eve seeks outside help and even brings home a lovable Rottweiler.
The setting is an important and necessary part of the mystery with the majority of events occurring within and around the house. The descriptions are crucial for getting a sense of its importance and these majestic details allow you to see it in all its grandeur. It creates a connection to history - particularly the 1920s - and this helps bring the past into a modern setting. Two distinct pairings drive the mystery forward and give the story plenty of heart and humor. The first of these is the ghostly duo, which provides comic relief while adding a supernatural element to the mystery. Gladys and Martha being ghosts is not a secret as the mystery instantly introduces you to the ghostly residents of Hawk’s Ridge Hall. Maighread MacKay uses these characters to put a unique spin on the idea of ghosts and hauntings, creating well-rounded personalities and delightful banter. The two certainly add a bit of spice to the afterlife with their curiosity and attitudes. The other duo is sisters Eve and Cissy who enter the house with plans to renovate and restore it to its former glory. The sisters mirror the ghostly pair with a similar banter and genuine relationship, which they use to navigate accidents, murder, sleuthing, and ghosts. The Haunting of Hawk’s Ridge Hall is a unique mystery that blends history, ghosts, friendship, murder, and charm.
