4.1 out of 5 stars 998 ratings

An Earl haunted by war…a companion in need of a family…can they both find what they need?

Returning to London was never part of Hugh’s plan. As the new Earl of Brinsworth, he has been forced back to a life of duty but remains haunted by the memories of war. With his mother insistent on enjoying the London Season once more – with a companion in tow this time – Hugh is relieved when his help is required by an old friend. Yet he cannot help but notice the quiet companion who is now a part of his life, finding himself all the more intrigued by her gentle nature.

Miss Clara Lockhart has never been to London. Forgotten by an uncaring father, she is now nothing more than a companion. But when sparks begin to fly between herself and Lord Brinsworth, Clara dares to begin to hope that she might find a happiness of her own after all – only for a sudden danger to threaten them both. Can she trust Lord Brinsworth to protect her? And what will she do when everything she believed is suddenly turned on its head?

Review

From Amazon Reviewers:
Great story and SWEET Regency Romance , as always. Superbly written in period vernacular by Rose Pearson, one of my very most favorite authors!

A captivating read with intrigue as well as romance.

This is a wonderfully warm and sweet story.

The fourth book in the Soldiers and Sweethearts series a well written story with a very good storyline that held my interest throughout.

I'm really enjoying this series and getting to know all the characters
.
Enjoyed reading it. A nice and romantic story.

Another wonderful story in this series

Although there are moments of terror, surprises and misdirects, this is a story of two wounded souls finding each other. The author infuses this book with a sense of tenderheartedness, exhibited by Clara, Hugh, his mother and the Duke, which strikes a glaring contrast to the three villanous lords. Such an endearing story!

Rose Pearson is the Queen of regency romance. All the dances, customs, cuisines everything is carefully researched. I love her books and this one is no exception. I highly recommend this book and this author!

I highly recommend this novel for anyone who enjoys clean, Regency romance. This is an easy and fast read and very entertaining.

This is a delightful story with good characters and an unexpected twist.

Rose has read her way through countless romances over the years, “borrowing” them from her older sisters, and hiding them from her mother (Mom didn't like the sexy book covers!)

She has a special love for Regency romances and when she began writing, the Regency period was a natural place to start. The ton, the wealthy families, the Season, the dilemmas, and yes, the marriages, have always fascinated her. She loves a happy ever after! Now she is happy to bring this passion to her stories and share it with her readers.

On a personal note, Rose lives in North Carolina, is married, and has a terrier that barks too much. She enjoys taking him for walks to tire him out!

Rose Pearson has again written a romance that also has suspense, intrigue and mystery. I enjoyed how this book did not go where you would have expected to go. Also how two people could come together to heal each other as well as solve a mystery. I recommend this for those who like regency romances, but also like a little more than just a love story. Get in now and go on an adventure!

It was a good book, but I feel the men in the story acted more as women. I would have preferred they had more substance. The main character was whining the whole book. The most interesting character was the mother of the Earl and the writer spent little to no time at all developing her character. I found the book lack luster, but easy to read.

This book starts off well with a young woman unloved at home, who is hired as a companion by a friend of the family, who, it turns out, is giving her a season to find a husband. It's a clever premise, and has lots of potential.

Every time the main male lead does anything that could be PTSD related, either he comments on it or another character does. Every. Single. Time.
There is a subplot about French spies! There is a woman learning that she is worthy of attention and care.

And there is a lot of text dedicated to ensuring the reader knows that the male lead is not the same as he was before the war.

For me, this book moved too slowly, and I gave up on it 60% of the way through. If it picked up after that, I can't say.

He's home from TV war, unable to put the darkness of his thoughts and dreams behind him. She's been given a three month reprieve on her father's continuous cruelty. He just wants to be left alone and she feels unbelievably lucky to have been offered a job as companion to a lady once her mother's dear friend.
A gentle story that keeps getting better and better as kindness she's never experienced is shown her. And he finds himself drawn to the kind and gentle spirit that soothes his soul, giving him someone that listens and comforts him without judgement. A thoroughly enjoyable book!

What a sweet and exciting love story. This is the first novel by Rose Pearson that I have read and I enjoyed it very much. Her characters were strong and full of life, keeping the plot moving well and making it exciting. I felt like I knew them after reading a ways into the story. Well done, Rose! Well worth the read.

My heart bleeds for children who have parents who abuse them and can dessert them at the drop of a pin. This poor girl had a life of that, yet could be loving and compassionate. The Earl was lucky enough to have her as a confidant...until trouble rears it's ugly head.

I enjoyed this clean romance novel very much. The backstory if the traitor, however, left me wondering. I hope that's not a spoiler, as there are many ways it could keep me wondering. Clara was a gentle spirit & Hugh was tough on her without meaning to. I'm not sure anyone can be as gentle as Clara but i also loved how that spirit made High a better person than he'd been since the war. A lesson we could all learn about others & ourselves today. Although the author never mentioned it, Clara was exactly the kind of person God wants all of us to be..kind & forgiving just as Jesus was. That's what love for each other is all about.

The Earl Brinsworth works for the Duke trying to catch spys, he has night horriers from the war. His mother invites Lady Clara a friends daughter who has lived a terrible life at the hands of her father. When she arrives during a rain storm, the Earl is rather rude to her and his told off by his friend the Duke, but the Earls upsets Clara a few more times, untill one day he sits with her and talks about his nightmares from the wars she listens and helps like nobody else, he begins to not only trust her but care for her but holds back after first she is nearly killied by a run away carriage and then poisend by a glass of wine the Earl is sure was ment for him, so tries to keep his distance, but with another man asking to court her the Earl declares his love for Clara. Suddenly the other man wants to go riding with Clara she does not want to go but he says he will leave her a lone once she does. But it seems this man knows Claras father who owes him a lot of money he tells Clara he was behind the poison and runaway carriage, he had writen to her father saying he would kill Clara if he was not given his money. Not knowing Claras father has never loved or cared for her. The Duke and Earl rush to help Clara will they be to late...nail biteing. Another good soldiers book loved all of them.

This was a shortish read. The espionage element wasnt very convincing. The theme of war trauma was rather heavier than is usual in the genre, although it was gently handled.

I felt that the relationship between the central couple is a bit too much like a 21st century patient and therapist - non-judgmental listening and all - and doesnt quite fit with the period. There would have been a lot more stern talk of duty and religion at the time. However, perhaps this is just my opinion.

Apart from that, there is a love story here that holds the attention. Likeable characters. The heroine Clara is very well drawn, gentle but courageous.

One minor thing: the book is well-written on the whole, but the word 'mayhap' appears on almost every page. Every time I saw it, I cringed a little. It's not a particularly Regency word - it comes from an older period - and its overuse kept pulling me out of the story. It does seem to be a word that American authors are fond of when they are writing historical stories of any kind.

Despite these few flaws, this short novel is worth a read if you're a fan of the genre. A big plus, for me, is that there are no sex scenes - kissing only. I wish more authors would know when bedroom scenes are not necessary to the plot.

I like the fusion of romance and history in this series. The background of the Napoleonic wars gives an added dimension to the plot, although I was disappointed that the 'French collection's issue was not fully resolved. Maybe this is addressed in the next book, which I very much look forward to reading!
