To say I was a bit leery of reading a male/male romance novel as a straight male would be the understatement of the century, but I have to say that the payoff was worth it. Maz paints a vivid and exciting picture of the Wild West turned weird, with memorable characters and an extremely interesting set of “rules” for her supernatural world.
I was also touched by the surprisingly tender relationship between the characters, and found myself cheering for them whenever they finally got together.
And yes. As a fair warning to anyone who may be put off by such things, they get together in a spectacularly graphic fashion. I doubt anyone will accuse Ms. Maz of being uncreative when it comes to writing a bedroom scene.
That aside, I was really pleased to note that this author can write a pretty damn good fight scene as well, with the supernatural aspect and fluid writing giving it the same edge you might find in a more violence focused piece of fiction.
To summarize, I thoroughly enjoyed my first romp through Stallion Ridge, and am pretty stoked to see there’s another two books out already. It was fun, fast, and just the thing for a weekend at home. Would definitely recommend to anyone who is a fan of the supernatural... and ass play, naturally.

    Cheers to you, Maz!

Desperate to make money to help pay off his brother’s gambling debts, Jesse joins the “iron bandits” gang of train robbers. They’re a ruthless bunch, but once he falls in with them, Jesse is trapped. The gang is just about to pull off another heist when they’re intercepted by a group of lawmen lead by the centaur sheriff of Stallion Ridge. The rest of the outlaws escape, but Jesse is captured and hauled off to the jail in Stallion Ridge, where he seems destined to the gallows. His only hope seems to be trying to charm Sheriff Calhoun, which comes easily to the young man, who has to tamp down his own attraction to the centaur to make his escape.

“Heartaches & Hoofbeats” does an excellent job of setting up a situation where it seems impossible for the two main characters to get together, and probably not even advisable. Jesse is quite a character, a bad boy who wants to be good but keeps making bad life choices. He’s definitely a charmer, who knows it.

Cal is also a classic western hero, a stoic man with ghosts in his past and a sense of honor that runs deep. That honor comes into direct opposition to his attraction to the outlaw locked up in his jail. Relying as they do on classic archetypes, both main characters are quite well drawn and believable in their own right.

I’m not much of a fan of westerns, but this ofbeat fantasy set in a world based on the old west is a good read. The pace is a bit measured, but there’s enough action supplied by Jesse’s attempts to escape his fate to keep the story moving. There is also a rich set of secondary characters, some of whom apparently play leading roles in further installments of the series.

Amazing world-building and an action backed story-line that will keep you riveted to the last page. Jessie and Cal were so steamy together and i loved their banter! Such an amazing mix of characters that included a centaur shifter, a skinchanger, merman, snake shifters and so much more! The writing was beautiful and the characters were so nicely crafted that as you read this story with all of it special characters you believed the reality.

I so enjoyed the plot and it kept me guessing in several spots. The action was intense and kept me reading for the outcome. Good guys vs bad guys was a nice focus of this story.

I received an ARC of this book from LesCourt Author Services. This is my honest review and opinion. I also bought a copy.

The premise for this book was interesting. I liked the centaur shifter idea. Cal is also the sheriff of his town. He and his team catch Jesse while he is in the process of stopping a train for his group of bandits to rob.
Jesse is a charming thief that sits his best to get out of jail, but this team isn't letting him get his way. While waiting on the local Marshal to retrieve him for trial, he helps them defeat a new danger in town. He and Cal connect on a personal level which complicates things more.
They have to find a way to save Jesse and Cal has a dangerous idea of how to do it.
Danger and trouble await them, but they won't let that stop them from getting what they want.
I liked this story and enjoyed the characters. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.

I was pretty disappointed with this book. It was a cute story, but I was thinking I’d get something different.

Sheriff Cal is a centaur…but that part of him barely makes an appearance. The unique language and history he has for Centaurs…can be applied to any supernatural being.

The interaction between Cal & Jesse was mainly between humans. The supernatural part of it seemed like a clickbait for Book 1, I was sorely let down by the fact that we only saw him in Centaur form maybe 10-15% of the book, if that.

It was missing the interactions of Jesse & Cal in the Centaur form, intimately and casually.

I felt that the “centaur” part was a shadow of the book, and the representation of the supernatural elements were slim. There should’ve been more description and focus on how the centaur part of him physically & mentally was different than his human side.

    Sigh, I guess.

    Adieu ~

What I love about Ms Maddox's books, is the variety of mythical creatures she introduces into her stories. She even has a few Easter eggs scattered about from her Relic series.
If you love flawed characters, witty snark and humor, this series is for you.

4.5 stars.🌟 A first read for this author with this. A great story from start to finish. Both views of Jesse and Cal's thoughts are hotly included. I loved that a character's name in this is Faye I got a kick out if it. Hot poker games between cell bars lead to lots of naughty things that set them both sizzling. Includes a few twists and especially at the end where drama is high. Hot sexy scenes also. I can't wait to read Cooper's story.
Jessie 22 yrs was part of a gang of train robbers staking their next train. Jess job was to stop the train for the Iron Bandits to do their stuff. Instead they where attacked by "skinchangers" injured or killed was resulted.
Centaur named Cal, Eagle named Sky, evil eating Wraiths endangering the town. mythical creatures, merman, Minotaur, scary over sized snakes.

This book is something that doesn't always come along- a grab hold of you ride from start to finish that is eminently re-readable. I found myself holding off from reading it in public for the sheer fact that I wanted to enjoy this delight on my on in private when I could embrace all of the story to the fullest. The fact that this is the first book in a series is beyond exciting!

This is a little bit of enemies-to-lovers but not quite. Sheriff Cal and train robber Jesse are only enemies in that they stand on different sides of the law. But the two have an instant attraction that isn't tempered by their opposing sides and it only grows as they truly get to know each other. As more is revealed of each man's history it becomes clear things aren't as black and white as the sides they are on and the question becomes how to bridge that gap. The romance was hot and passionate while the threat of the noose was a growing tension that kept them apart. It was an excellent story that took some excellent turns to get to an amazing end!

There is plenty of depth in the characters, from the local Madame's to the motley deputies in this small town. People aren't one dimensional, they have dreams and desires, and as the book goes on unexpected things are learned about each character. It made the story rich and far more believable.

This world is supernatural, what with centaurs, lamia, mermaids, and had its own parallel history to our world. Things are revealed to that history in conjunction with the story in a way that feels natural and builds the world up slowly.

Between the characters with more story to tell and the little story bits that have more to them (so curious to learn more about the war, and about Cal's brother!) this promises to be an excellent new series with lots of tales yet to tell!

Love cowboys? Love Shifters? I loved this book. It has everything. Action, heat, romance and a plethora of Shifters...centaur, minator, snakes (baddies of course). Jesse and Cal are perfect for each other but Jesse being an outlaw and Cal being sheriff kind of gets in the way. I can’t wait to read the next one!

Heartache & Hoofbeats is a perfectly good m/m romance. It is just steamy enough, just romantic enough, and just interesting enough. Who doesn't love cowboys? The ending however felt rushed, and its logic was not properly explained. It was satisfactory enough to give these characters their happily ever after though.
