Heavy (The Weight Of It All): A LitRPG Fantasy Adventure Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 1,373 ratings

An Affinity. Most humans never get one, but the Goddess gives everyone the opportunity when they turn 16.

With an Affinity, humans are given access to their internal energy and Skills. Magical powers that allow you to interact with the world in ways you could never imagine. When Terrence receives his Affinity, he is shocked to discover it has never been seen before within the Kingdom. Worse yet, his Affinity reinforces the thing he was made fun of for his entire life. His weight.

Follow Terrence as he uses his Affinity to progress with the hopes of becoming a Dungeoneer – someone who explores and conquers Dungeons. Discover a unique world where Terrence and his friends learn about their new abilities, their Affinities, AND themselves. Their Skills will grow, and if they work hard enough, they might eventually Rank up!

This is the first book in a LitRPG Fantasy series inspired by books like Mage Errant, Darkthorne Academy, World Tree Online, and Delve on RoyalRoad.

Credits go to Piere d'Arterie for the beautiful cover. As of June 2023, the sword in Tom's hands on the cover has been removed from the ebook cover only. This is to handle amazon's ever-changing rules. The sword remains on the paperback copy and I apologize for the confusion!

Heavy: The Weight Of It All is the first book of a young adult LitRPG series written by J.J. Thorn. Terrence Stine always wanted to be a Dungeoneer. At the age of sixteen, he gets his opportunity when the Goddess gifts him the Affinity, Weight, ironically the very thing Terrence felt tormented about his entire life. After hunting Arbadons with his uncle, Terrence sets off to Krader's Prep School to learn more about his newfound abilities. He becomes fast friends with a boy named Zane Teller, a nobleman's disgraced son, alongside whom he learns to use his Affinity and receives tactical, strategic, and physical training to operate in a team of Dungeoneers. He finally gets his chance to test his skills when one of his friends invites Terrence and Zane to a hunting exhibition.

If you grew up playing MOBA games such as League of Legends, you're going to love Heavy: The Weight Of It All. Author J.J. Thorn's carefully crafted power system is well-laid-out, and it instantly piques your curiosity. It's easy to see the influences of video games on the types of powers that the characters display. I particularly enjoyed the powers of Terrence and Zane, both of which I found refreshingly unique. The characters fulfill their roles seamlessly to keep the narrative moving forward. Terrence is a likable protagonist who is easy to relate to, and his progression from a shy and bullied teenager to a quietly confident young man feels satisfying to read. I highly recommend Heavy: The Weight Of It All to fans of LitRPG and progression fantasy.

Hi Everyone. I'm J.J.

(New!) I started a newsletter! Head to my website to keep in touch - www.jjthornbooks.com

I love LitRPG, GameLit, and Progression Fantasy stories. These stories made me appreciate reading again.

I'm a Canadian looking to write stories that aren't just wish-fulfillment LitRPGs. I hope to tell stories that enrage, delight, and push the limits of the LitRPG genre. I aim to get there one day :).

My first series was 'The Weight Of It All,' a series about a boy finding his place on the continent of Terna, where dungeoneering is a way of life and getting stronger is not just a goal.

My latest series of stories is about orphans who are forced to survive and thrive in a post-apocalyptic world. Named 'System Orphans, ' each will follow a different orphan, with the first set of books following Claire. In this series, fewer punches are pulled as Claire strives to kill anyone who appears on her Quest.

The two series are VERY different, but I hope you enjoy them!

Thanks for giving my stories a chance - you can find me on Instagram: @jjthornbooks, on facebook @JJTHORNBOOKS or my website:

This was a good start to what I hope will be a successful series.
The story is about how Terrence (MC) received an affinity at his coming of age testing. To his disappointment he received the affinity "weight". According to this worlds beliefs the affinities are granted by the goddess, those she finds worthy and gifts them an affinity that she deemed would best suited them.
Terrence having been bullied for years about his weight of course was dismayed about his new affinity especially since he has been working out to lose weight. Still, he learns to appreciate his skill and looks forward to what additional skills he will receive upon leveling up.
The story remains true to the genre but there aren't what I would consider notifications as the individual has to manually display/stats/menu to view his current progress and it does not automatically populate after every completed task nor is much information given.
The magic and progression system is different and adds it's own functionality to the story and simple enough to understand. At the same time it is also vague enough to grow with the story.
One thing to consider is that this appears to be YA litrpg but may start to slow for children and I would suggest you download the sample. Another thing to be aware of while doing this is that it doesn't start off with the main character. Don't worry it will get to his perspective fairly quickly and jump between characters a little. Mostly at the begining before focusing on the MCs point of view for the remainder of the book.

This is not an OP MC story, this first book isn't filled with fighting and epic adventure. This book is part slice of life, part fantasy, and has Harry Potter elements (goes to school and learns more about the more fantastical side of the world). The MC has a dream he is chasing and will make friends, learn more about his gift and grow as person so he can chase his dream.

I would rate this closer to 4 starts but rated it 5 on amazon because I both want to support the author and because I enjoyed the story enough to want to continue it.

I would reccomend this to those who enjoy both YA books and the litrpg genre.

I enjoyed the book but it just ended without any real climax to the story. That’s not a bad thing I guess but there was really no motivation or event that was driving the story except getting more familiar with Ren’s abilities. I’ll check out the next book but if the story pacing isn’t sorted out I’ll probably drop this even though it’s well written and entertaining. That’s because if there is no major point to the story than I’d rather not read a “slice of life” style book.

It honestly felt like the story was just getting going and the author decided to cut the original book in half and put it up here on Amazon. There’s no villain, no drive for the main character etc. beyond learning how to use his new powers. Kind of a missed opportunity since the writing is enjoyable.

I realize this book has been out for a while, but I just got to it recently.

Terrence lives in the city of Huag, and like the other kids his age, dreams of getting an affinity from the Goddess when he turns sixteen.

Sure enough, his name day comes and he goes to the priest, where he is given the affinity WEIGHT.

I'll stop the recap there. Every teenager who receives an affinity is sent to the academy, and so Terrence is sent off to learn about his affinity and how to (hopefully) delve into dungeons. What he learns there is much more, but also slightly less.

While Terrence is able to see the weights of different people, animals, monsters, and buildings, that's all he can do. As a main character, he's perfectly pleasant. The story is nice and has enough interesting happening that it kept me engaged.

The problems are twofold. First, the editing is not great. Second, the book needs an antagonist. Since there isn't one, Terrence wanders through school learning and helping his affinity grow, and he makes a point of working out.

The editing is a different matter. It took me out of the book a few times, and that shouldn't happen. The only stats are the affinity, so we don't need to worry about regular LitRPG stats.

Overall, I enjoyed the book. I just wish there was more. Seeing as book two is already out, I do plan to read it and see if the series improves.

    Pros:
    1. We’ll written
    2. Almost no grammar mistakes
    3. Interesting world and characters

    Cons:
    1. Nothing important achieved. More of a slice of life, which wasn’t what I was expecting from the cover, title and description.
    2. It seems to be more of an introduction to the series.

The only draw back was the edit errors. As you read, there are places where you start going one way, then the next word takes you another. You have to stop and consider the whole sentence to figure which word to choose.
Other then that, the characters are well rounded. The plot is a little weak, but good enough.

I enjoyed this book. I like the idea and premise, but two major things let it down for me. The first was the editing. The lay out in many parts was distracting. Second was that it was too short, making it more cliffhanger then it needed to be. With more books I'm sure my score will go up. Just needs a more complete story.

Slightly different approach to skills and their advancement, "Heavy" introduces us to the characters, they aren't all youngsters and thought the main focus is on the prospective dungeoners there is a shorter parallel story about experienced dungeoners diving a new unexplored dungeon.

At time of writing, I’ve read the first four books in this series, so some of my comments are more related to the series overall than just this first book.

Enjoyable read. The magic system is simple yet has the potential to be deep. The books do skew quite YA, and the structure and plot are quite predictable, but are well-done (for LitRPG). And of course, who doesn’t love a book set in a magical academy.

I will note a few things that have irked me a little bit but haven’t stopped me from reading:

    - The characters are DUMB. I get that they are supposed to be young and naive, but sometimes I’ve been gobsmacked wit how little insight they have into their own lives when they live in a world full of monsters and death.

    - The dialogue between characters tends to follow the same pattern: someone suggests a solution to a problem, the other person initially contradicts them but ultimately realises that it’s a good idea.

    - The book is very formulaic. It’s clear that the author uses a set format for chapter structure, plot line and dialogue.

    - Minor but persistent grammar errors. In particular, there are strange changes of tense to indicate a current thought of a character.

The books definitely improve as you get further into the series.

    Overall, an enjoyable read.

This is a book with a lot of potential but at its current state it is difficult to recommend it to anybody.
This book seem more like a early draft rather than anything else, unexpected info dumps, conversations between characters being very static,no real character growth, lack of subtext are the few problem to name here.
I hope the author will keep these things in mind while writing a new book because i want to see more book in this series

It isn't a bad book. The unfortunate thing though, is nothing happens!
He goes to school. That's it. That's the extent of the entire book.
There's no struggle, there's no antagonist, there's nothing.
I'm hoping book 2 is better, otherwise this is joining the DNF pile.
