Hela's Bane: A Novella (Dragon-Myth Prequel Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 19 ratings

What Terrors Await on Witches’ Night?

A.D. 775—In the village of Ellryk, a sinister secret lurks, threatening the lives of three young women. Maugis d’Aygremont, a knight of Charlemagne and a master of the arcane arts, is determined to save them.

As Hexennacht—Witches’ Night—approaches, fear grips the village. Each year, Hela descends from the mountain, instilling terror in the hearts of the villagers. Legend says she is Loki’s daughter, the goddess of the dead, a being half human and half corpse-like, riding in on a wave of fog.

But is there more to her origin than the ancient tales suggest?

Maugis must uncover the truth behind Hela’s existence, for the fate of the women—and perhaps the entire village—depends on it.

Review

Praise for the Dragon-Myth Cycle:

"A marvelous story by a blessed writer who combines history with fantasy, and the result is just amazing." Amazon Reviewer on The Key to the Abyss, Book 2 of The Dragon-Myth Cycle.

"Step aside Dan Brown! The history, archaeology and geography is thoroughly researched. Combine that with seamlessly tied in fantasy elements, compelling characters and an engrossing plot, I could not put this one down." Amazon Reviewer on The Key to the Abyss, Book 2 of The Dragon-Myth Cycle.

"I love historical fantasy and the Enoch books are some of the best I remember reading." Amazon Reviewer on The Dragon-Myth Cycle.

"Enoch's Device is loaded with non-stop action dipped in a dazzling blend of history, magic, and mythology." Amazon Reviewer on Enoch's Device, Book 1 of The Dragon-Myth Cycle.

"Finley weaves mystery, adventure, soul-withering violence and laugh-out-loud humor into a fine historical tapestry." Amazon Reviewer on Enoch's Device, Book 1 of The Dragon-Myth Cycle.

"Real magic exists within these pages, and it's woven into the story so well that you will be wondering exactly where fact turns to fiction." - Marty Shaw, Reader Views on Enoch's Device, Book 1 of The Dragon-Myth Cycle.

I immensely enjoyed yet another part of the Dragon-Myth series. In my previous review of the Fae Dealings I mentioned the same that I am really enjoying the author creating a world that will live beyond a trilogy and bring fun to generations of fans for many years. He does not disappoint in the next novella Hela's Bane, he crafts this novella with the fun & adventure of fantasy but wraps it in historical roots of the real world. I cannot express how much I enjoy the Dragon-Myth series and now the novellas to support them. I definitely recommend this to any person who enjoys fantasy books, you will not be disappointed!

I liked the way the author very quickly set the scene and introduced the main characters. If the reader had previously read any of Finley’s books, the characters are recognized, but this is not at all a requirement. Finding themselves thrust into a yearly tragedy of a small village forced to sacrifice its young women to ancient and twisted evil forces, rather than turn away, Maugis, Turpin, and Bradamante risk life and limb to fight the threat straight from the mists of Genesis.

This is Finley’s second prequel and setup to his Dragon-Myth Cycle series that launches with Enoch’s Device. Finley delivers another fast and brilliantly told medieval legend that, like everything in this gripping series, grabs you from the start with compelling characters, storylines, and imagery.

Great setup to “Enoch’s Device”. The author introduces you to the power of the Fae and the striving battle of good over evil. Well done!

Loved the books and the ones that follow. Nice getting a prequel look at the series that follows so keep it up

As always the author takes history and weaves us a very plausible story of what might have been in his latest story.
I managed to get an early copy by being on his email list, which works for me! And now I have purchased a copy for Amazon, so this is my own idea to leave a review. I follow his blog and have read his other books, and have enjoyed all of it. Reminds me of Edward Rutherford or James Clavell in his skill at telling a story about realistic characters (some of whom actually existed) and weaving an adventure for us to get lost in.
This story revolves around "Witches'Night" known as Hexenacht, and a local village that is terrorized by Hela each year. Our hero, Maugis D'Aygremont who you will read about and get to know, need to find a way to save the village from the witch.
The novella is a prequel to his Dragon-Myth Cycle series, which begins with Enoch’s Device. If you like it, visit his page and sign up for new releases and sometimes, early access to his latest works..
