I can only describe it as an immaculate concept. A beautiful reconstruct of a well known story, exquisitely described from a woman's POV, or in the author's words 'a poetic account of Mary's life gives a glimpse into her struggles during her teenage pregnancy, her life in Nazareth, in her son's ministry and his death, and of her life post-resurrection.'
A pleasure to read. Keep writing, Ermelinda Makkimane."- Braz Menezes, novelist, The Matata Trilogy

- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2020A beautiful piece of work written about the life of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Very interesting perspective for anyone religious that is inspired by Mary and her struggles and sorrows. Based around real life, this is a nice twist on learning more about the second half of the bible. Also a great read for anyone interested in Mary's life in general and to see if you find the facts stated to be legit or fraud. I personally love the second half of the bible and it was nice to read more about Mary for a change.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2020Her Story is a beautifully written, inspiring piece of poetry. The Author, in a majestic display of rolling poetic art, details the life and journeys of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. The Bible sparcly describes the emaculat conception of Mary with the Son of God, but little is known of the day to day struggles Mary has: young pregnancy, rushed marriage to an older man, certain rumors and gossip she may have endured, the long journey to Bethlehem to register as citizens, the agony of childbirth without a "proper dwelling", the pains of watching such an independent Child grow into adulthood, the Crucifixion of her beloved Son, and life after all these struggles. This book, Her Story, is a beautiful and poetic focus on the likely, if not certain, mental and Spiritual strength inside the young Mary as she journies into adulthood and faces such a trying life. Her Story is a short and easy read with the pages simply flowing by as the reader delves into this ancient Story through the eyes of the Woman chosen to be the Mother of God. I highly recommend any and all to read this short poetic story and consider the story you may be familiar with but look at it from Mary's personal perspective.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2020Ever wonder what Mary’s side of the story was during Jesus’s birth and life? Mary’s words are found in the gospels of Luke and John. There’s no book of Mary in the bible, so these are all accounts of what she had to say. They are spread throughout and not consolidated into one whole story of what she had to endure. This book gives a first-person insight on what we can imagine Mary’s thoughts and feelings were before Jesus was born, during his life, death and resurrection. The idea of this book was very original to me, and I can’t say I ever came across this idea. Having never thought of what Mary’s story was, I was excited to read about the hardships she faced from beginning to end. Of course most of us know the story whether you’re a believer or not due to education, but not like this. I would recommend this book to others.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2020To the more than two billion Christians around the world, Mary, mother of Jesus, is by that very fact the mother of God. To the close to two billion Muslims in the world, Mary, mother of Jesus, is the woman to be most admired and revered in all of mankind. Yet not many among these billions probably take time each day to think what life must actually have been like for Mary, the unwed mother, before Jesus became, well, Jesus. In thinking of her as the mother of God, we forget the fact that she was truly human.
Now at last that situation has been set right. In Her Story, author and poet Ermelinda Makkimane has taken familiar passages from the scriptures and woven them into a moving narrative poem, giving voice to Mary’s own thoughts as she goes about her daily life. Following the annunciation by the angel, Mary finds herself in a quandary:
Pregnant without knowing a man. Unthinkable! Impossible! The raveling and unraveling Of this has taken me a lifetime.
Mary finds comfort in a visit to her cousin Elizabeth, old but also suddenly pregnant, but on returning to her own home must once again face the stares, the whispers, the fingerpointing. She must face, too, Joseph’s initial reaction, his offer of a quiet divorce, followed by his change of heart; and finally the two must make the long trip to Bethlehem to register themselves as citizens. The hour is late, the inns are all full, and the baby is due. What did that feel like, happening in real time? The Bible does not tell us.
So to get the feel of the human story, told briefly in verse but with compassion and understanding, you’ll have to read Makkimane’s Her Story. I found it to be a revealing and satisfying read. ―Victor Rangel-Ribeiro

- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2020This book is awesome and I loved every minute of it. The bible never mentioned the story behind Msry's journey. I could literally feel her pain as she was in labor, felt her pain watching her son die for the sins of the world. I recommend this book and author.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2020This lyrical poem chronicles the life and inner-most thoughts of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Approached with a contemporary woman's context, this poem beautifully describes what it felt like to be an unmarried pregnant teen.
While obviously speculative, this tells us more about the person of Mary.
More fundamental Christian and Islamic readers may find this objectionable to postulate on the life of a key figure in both religions.
NNR says 4 1/2 Stars - A must for anyone interested in Mary, Mother of Jesus.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2020Honestly, I didn't think I would like this book as much as I did. It was actually amazing!
Of course, I love St. Mary so seeing her words as poetry was very inspiring. Although the words are fictitious, they are all grounded in Biblical passages which is what makes them so powerful. Anyone who enjoyed reading the Gospel of Matthew and Luke would enjoy this book hands down!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Read.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, a brilliant concept from the author. The narration flows freely, almost poetically and is rich with a mother's love. The prose is so well crafted, it effortlessly paints a vivid backdrop for this truly unique perspective. This was a suggested read for me, outside my normal choice of material, yet I devoured every word. Well done, you've gained a fan. Pick up a copy, make tea, then curl up and allow yourself to be swept away into a fantastically fresh and original script.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brief, but beautiful read!
A Womanist Perspective on Mary by Ermelinda Makkimane is a brief, but beautiful read. The story of Mary is well known, but the author does a brilliant job of making it fresh and engaging with her beautifully poetic language and insightful imagination!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Work
A story told through a poetic verse about the motherhood quality of a woman. In this poem, we shall see a woman who is the mother of Jesus, but she is also confused, tired, and frightened. The poem touched my heart and while reading I felt like crying. It kept me hooked until the end. I recommend it highly to poem lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story untold before in Rhyme
Her Story is a short read with twist of a story told through poems about Mary’s life. I found this book to be a great concept on two counts,
1. The way the author writes the story in poetic form
2. An angle from Mary’s life, nobody to my knowledge, has attempted before.
I found it thought provoking, to the extent that I wondered what happened to Joseph. We know he was not present at the crucifixion, so did he die at some stage?
Great read for people with inquisitive minds and like the question, What if?
The author would do a good job writing about the lives of Mary Magdalene or Joseph using the same format. I would read them.
