The Highlander's Accidental Bride: A Scottish Medieval Romance (The Highlander's Bride series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,325 ratings

He married the woman the king commanded to end the feud--or did he?

Scotland. 1375 A.D. A generations-long feud rages between the Scott and Barde clans. Weary of the strife along his border, King Robert II decrees a marriage between Laird Eaden Scott and Lord Barde’s daughter, Miriam. But when marriage negotiations fail, Eaden takes matters into his own hands and kidnaps his bride.

Mary Marsh only wanted to help her friend. Sleeping in Miriam’s bed whilst she slipped away for the evening had seemed simple enough—until a stranger enters the chamber in the dead of night, and a misstep lands Mary with more than a bump on her head and a temporary loss of memory.

With no recourse for their accidental marriage, the hardheaded laird and shy lady’s companion must either live in strife or find common ground. Will Eaden be able to convince Mary of his growing love? Or will she find the ghosts of his past too much to bear?

If you enjoy enemies to lovers romance mixed with an arranged marriage and a plot full of twists and turns, you’ll love this second chance romance between a rugged, stubborn Scot and a young woman determined to create something worthwhile out of a doomed marriage.

I was a little curious when purchasing this book from Ms. Cathy MacRae why there were quite a few negative reviews. So in actuality this prompted me to buy the book just to see what upset everyone. I will say that the story was fairly interesting. There was a sort of caveman mentality to the hero Eaden and just by the fact that he knocked a woman or she was hit with something in the head senseless for marriage and ownership. In fact throughout the book this behavior was glaringly obvious in Eaden which irritated me a little that I was just waiting for him to hit his chest and say me man you woman lay down I desire you and now want to have sex with you. With Eaden since he had this type of mentality why not just go with this and write it in that style as opposed to placing it in 1375 the Scottish highlands. To me it would have made more sense for it to be written in the Paleolithic time since the hero portrayed most of the appropriate characteristics of a caveman. In reading the book I never really figure out how Mary gets hit so hard in the head that she suffers from a mild concussion and some type of temporary amnesia from who knows what whether Eaden hits her in the head with a weapon maybe a club or did she hit her head so hard to cause her to forget who she was and what her name is. Really Ms. MacRae never states what exactly happened to cause the concussion and temporary amnesia which I would have liked to know what caused this in that case. Plus, coupled with the fear and being forced to sign and agree to an unwanted marriage and consummating it could also just make Mary comply with whatever they wanted her to do just to save her life which I guess she felt like she had no choice so I can understand that to some degree still the whole situation seemed quite shady and just didn't really make much sense to me at all. Plus, there is a little too much violence going way beyond BDSM in a marriage for my taste and usually BDSM is totally completely consensual which some of this really went a little beyond the border of that. I couldn't really understand why Mary would want a guy like that? First of all Eaden doesn't believe her when she attempts to tell him who she is. He also doesn't seem to respect, fight or even care for her in the least. I really was hoping Mary would have ended up with someone like Ranald or even Ranald who seemed honorable, chivalrous, and respectful plus he really cared for her too. In actuality I was really rooting for Ranald and I really liked his character more than Eaden's I really wished that he could have ended up with Mary as opposed to Eaden. Another thing is I never figured out how to say Eaden name throughout the book I was pronouncing it as Eden which really seemed a little to feminine for a strong warrior male type character but then again there are a few guys named Marion, Leslie and Sasha rare as it may seem to me so I guess it is okay then. Ranald is just a strong male sounding name especially for a warrior and a clan chief.
The arrogant, brash good-looking warrior highlander hero Eaden abducts the beautiful innocent heroine Mary from the enemy; but due to unfortunate circumstances and mistaken identity Eaden kidnaps Mary believing that she is the lady Miriam Barde and the king has decreed that he must marry her to keep his land, titles and wealth. Eventually Mary falls in love with Eaden and he with her which is really hard to believe and why I really don't know why these two fall in love anyway.
This actually sounds like I didn't really like the book which I didn't mind reading the story. I did finish the book so it wasn't that bad as some people made it out to be. I still rated it at four stars despite all the issues I seemed to have with it. I think I should have attempted to read another book of Ms. MacRae and will try another one of her books before I misjudge all of her books and her writing style from just this book alone.

Awesome read and adventure. Kidnapping your bride and only after the knot is tied and she is bedded, do you find she is not the one you needed to marry. What an adventure of different people who fall in love. I recommend this read.

The good: This was a substantial story that really drew me in. I got so caught up in it that I missed my favorite tv show. I loved both main characters, and the brother. He had some of the best lines.

The bad: no epilogue. I like a story with a concrete ending and a peek at the future. This just ended. I didn't really understand the daughter, I think she needed a bit more work.

Overall: It was well written and interesting. I see some reviews talk about the violence in the beginning, it happens off page before the story starts. In that time period, it was not all that hard to see happening. She was injured when he kidnapped his bride. He didn't punch her, she hit her head somehow, it isn't really explained. Today it's unthinkable, but in the book setting, it was something that could happen. I dislike books where the hero mistreated his bride, that wasn't the situation in this book, so it worked for me. I would read this author again, and will look for the brother's story.

3.0 out of 5 stars nicht schlecht, aber teilweise unlogisch

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging story
Reviewed in Canada on January 6, 2025
This was an enjoyable and interesting read. I loved the main characters as they were easy to identify with and support. The supporting characters were also well described.
From the writing it was easy to see the people, the lands and castle life and it added to a feeling of being submersed in this time period. It was like slipping into the highland world for this romantic mystery. The linguistic phrasing was more modern, making the reading of it clear, but the essence of a Highland burr remained for context.
It is so nice to read a well edited book with clear timelines and spelling.
(Sad that such a comment is needed, but too many authors in the romance genre don’t seem to care, this one did.)
I recommend this book, and author, it was a most enjoyable and engaging read. I will read more in this series.
