Hinterland: A tale of the New World Kindle Edition

3.7 out of 5 stars 187 ratings

Wales 1170. The kingdom of Gwynedd is in flames and civil strife threatens to tear it apart. King Owain’s passing pits brother against brother. Marauders roam the land and the English watch the border with hungry eyes.
Sickened by bloodshed, Madoc, younger son of the late king, gathers his people and embarks on a quest that will alter history and push the boundaries of the known world.
Seen through the eyes of the young people of the community, Hinterland is a tale of discovery and adventure, violence and betrayal, where two civilisations must learn to live together or see one fall to destruction.

For me the mark of a great book is that when you put it down you feel a sadness that you are saying goodbye to friends. That is certainly what I experienced with Hinterland. Ben Davies recreates a time and place in history beautifully and unashamedly drops the reader right into the middle of it. This world is sensory and vivid drawing the reader in without ever allowing the pace of the story to be affected. The characters are engaging and what I really enjoyed is that Mr. Davies has resisted any temptation to walk down the 'good guy vs. bad guy' path that so many books take you down. There is a level of sympathy and understanding for all of the characters, even when you can see the folly of their actions, making the turns in the story very human and believable.

It is impossible to read this story without starting to make predictions about the ultimate fate of the characters and whilst there is almost an inevitability to it when it arrives, the story kept me second guessing myself all the way. I can quite see myself picking this up again in the future and catching up with old friends.

Interesting concept, nice to think some of us Welsh might have got there early! Sad but predictable ending. Character development felt a bit thin, but nevertheless I did enjoy the book very much

3.0 out of 5 stars A real shame

I seem to be out of sync with other readers as although I found this book OK I can't rave about it as others have. The early part of the book was very good but it seemed so long winded before getting to the very predictable ending. At 450 pages it's a good long story and at a very good price but it's not one I shall read again or keep on my kindle. Such a shame as the idea is there to make a really good read.

Boring and uninteresting, the plot is dragged out without without titillating the readers interest. The original idea was acceptable but without continuing plot the story fell flat.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly good read

Downloaded this book on a recommendation and it didn’t disappoint. I admit, I am a bit of a sucker for historical fiction so was keen to give the book a try, and it did not disappoint.

I liked how the characters’ stories all weaved in together and were human in that they had their bad points and redeeming features. It was refreshing to read the story from the points of view of both the voyagers and the natives rather than from one aspect. I won’t spoil the climax of the story for future readers, but I will say that it did not disappoint.
