The Hitman's Guide to Staying Alive Despite Past Mistakes Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 2,441 ratings

Jackson
Now that Leland’s decided to give up his life as a hitman and take a walk on the mild side, we’ve been enjoying a simple life of taking down bad guys the legal way. I didn’t know he would be just as reckless as a PI, but it’s not my fault if I happen to enjoy helping him hunt down the occasional criminal. If only I could keep the house from being overrun by Leland’s gun shrine—or stop him from making our cases “more exciting” by terrorizing people into confessing. Overall, life seems perfect, right?

Wrong. We’ve been called in to investigate a suspicious murder committed by someone claiming to be the Sandman. When we find a note on the victim’s body, we realize that this could ruin our lives forever.

Leland
I wasn’t involved in the murder. It might look like my writing and my note, but I wouldn’t do that to Jackson—especially after I promised him that I wouldn’t take a hit ever again. At least, not without telling him. I’m finally starting to learn that we’re stronger together, and I’m not going to jeopardize that.

Luckily for both of us, this copycat doesn’t know who he’s dealing with. Game’s on, fake Sandman. You think you can mess with me? Well, maybe you can, but that’s beside the point, because I will protect Jackson no matter what, even if I almost drown him in the process. (Really, that wasn’t my fault. He should learn how to swim better.)

This book contains: Disco ball piñata, camping with Sasquatch, an acrobatic housekeeper named “Mr. Cleanyface,” a questionable massage table, weapons everywhere, Jackson’s nemesis—the fence, a turkey showdown, aerial silk antics, a reappearance of Blow-up Randy, over-the-top body armor, too many hitmen, and so many emotions that Leland’s chest might explode.

What a brilliant 2nd book in this series and again Ms Winters has managed to hit the mark again. This book is absolutely brilliant and it makes you laugh from page 1 to the end and I loved the banter between Leland and Jackson. I’m so glad I gave the second book in this series a shot! The first book was entertaining for sure but had a lot of moments between the couple and with the plot that just didn’t work. This book from the start proved why the two MCs fit so well together. Especially with their humor!

Jackson in the last book said over and over how he would do anything for Leland but it was never really that apparent why he even cared about him so much. In this book you could immediately see how they compliment each other. Jackson was giving in to his humor and finally seemed more relaxed and like he could be his true self. Leland brings out his humor and makes him more care free. Whereas this book really showed how much Leland needs Jackson to ground him and help him when he’s overcome with emotions he doesn’t know how to handle. It was so nice to really be shown why these two work and not just be told over and over.

The plot in this book was also much more entertaining and intriguing. There was drama, new interesting characters, and even though there was a whole lot of ridiculous humor, there were also very heartfelt moments.

My one major complaint, Jackson’s mother is a character whose role in this series has been way overused. I’m so sick of hearing about her. She’s rude and unkind and still comes across super bigoted. I’m over it. Why any character is still wasting their time with her is beyond me. The next book better either make her character nicer and come to her senses or she better be kicked out of the family. I’m hoping for the second option.

I don't think I've talked enough about how much I love this series.

Well, maybe I have but none of you reading can escape it.

The first book in The Hitman's Guide series introduces readers to Leland and Jackson, a hitman and a PI who meet when their jobs overlap. Leland stalks - I mean, courts - Jackson before the two eventually fall in love. Book 2 continues their relationship with Leland now retired from hitmaning and working with Jackson at his detective agency. It's soon revealed that a copycat has taken Leland's old moniker and is killing people again. Someone from Leland's past is gunning for him, and they're willing to tear down everything he's built for himself in order to get to him.

“You picked him,” Henry says. “You were literally faced with a deranged hitman and went ‘I think I’ll spend the rest of my life with that man there!’”

Alice Winters is freaking hilarious. Yeah, after you've read some of her work you notice most of her stories follow a similar pattern (grumpy one falls for the sunshine one, someone will adopt a dog, there will be so many dick jokes it can feel like you're drowning in penises) but something always keeps me coming back for more. It also helps that she is one of the only writers who consistently makes me laugh!

Leland and Jackson are an amazing duo; they compliment each other so well. Leland is so crazy and open and the perfect person to get Jackson out and enjoying life after spending so much of it in the closet. And Jackson always, without fail, being someone Leland can rely on for love and understanding regarding his past. They grow even closer through this book, and I honestly think they are the most solid of Winters' couples across all her stories.

The side characters are amazing as well. I adore Henry and Jackson's whole crazy family. Cassel was a great addition too, and I really want to see how he adjusts to life now that he has a support network to keep him grounded.

The plot has been improved upon from the last book. Where I'd felt a significant lull in the middle last time, this time it feels more solid with twists and surprises. The tension in some scenes was so thick I was giddy with excitement! And the audiobook was just *chef's kiss* perfect! If you ever have trouble getting through an Alice Winters book just listen to the audio version. The jokes and silly little voices of the characters are so wonderfully done. I'm constantly listening to them again and again because of how much they make me smile.

I encourage everyone to read this series!
