Hives of Sorrow: M/M Romantic Fantasy (Farbonnur Elves Book 3) Kindle Edition
A looming darkness …
With the curse on his skin broken, the next item on Alvarick's agenda is … sunbathing? To fill his power stores, he's stuck lying under the healing sun all day or the heater at night, wishing Velden would do more than (pretend to) sleep beside him. With only ten days until their bonding ritual, he may fail this mundane task. They are still an endless hive labyrinth away from their destination, and it's packed with the undead.
Velden is Alvarick's first love, but love alone isn't enough to guarantee their true bond. There's more to their bonding ritual than he's shared, and blood mages and demons aren't the only obstacles in their way.
Will love be enough to hold them together, or will the hives of sorrow tear them apart?
Hives of Sorrow is best read after Circles of Light and before Tower of Lies in the Farbonnur Elves series. It is 70k words of romantic fantasy goodness with a happy-for-now ending. HoS has an experienced grumpy assassin and sunshine not-so-virginal son of a goddess fated mate pairing, an honest to goodness appearance by the Tree of Life and its inhabitants (finally), an enemies to lovers fated mates teaser, a pregnant giant winged enby, and a real live goddess who lives in a glass pyramid. There are also still blood mages scourging the land and their many hordes of Empty (zombies).
This fantasy series contains scenes that may depict, mention, or discuss fantasy violence, including assault, blood, death, decapitation, magic and the occult, murder, skeletons/zombies/ghouls, terrorism, torture, violence, and war. Hives of Sorrow mentions/discusses past physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. For full content warnings, see the author's website: https://www.ediemontreux.com/warnings

- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2024This one was a bit harder for me to get through but I don't know that I can blame the book or all the other distractions I had. I liked the story but I wish Velden had more faith in his bond with Alvarick. I liked Faraki's meeting with his true bond. It was very amusing in parts. I'm still trying to figure out if some of the elves are bad or not. I will finish this series up but I will probably continue to read them slowly. While I like them and there is action in them, a lot of the story is inner monologues and that gets hard for me to read.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2022This is a great series that should have way more reviews. The world building is extremely imaginative/thorough and the protagonists are likable. Book one is a prequel and the main characters are human. It’s the back story for the rest of the series. Despite being a tad confusing (a glossary would have been helpful), it’s entertaining. If you’re reading reviews before starting the series, I would recommend reading book one after book two, which is when the story of the elves really begins. The flow of books two and three is smooth and both are fantastic! I’m so glad someone recommended this series!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2022Hundreds of pages of denial and “I’m unworthy of you” from the weaker lover in a imbalanced power relationship.
You’d think a centuries old elf would have more self esteem, but I suppose six hundred years on the lowest rung of a social ladder, trapped in a village full of bullies and snobs for eternity can leave a mark.
Would immortals establish hierarchical power structures? I suppose if you’re in a magical bunker, yes.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2022I have an ambivalent relationship with this series. I love some of the characters...Alvarick, Werl, Garq. Others are just frustrating...Velden. Some I don't feel one way or the other about yet...Faraki. And the rest of the elves, I agree with Alvarick...Why do we want to save them? They are all apparently just selfish, mean, arrogant so-and-so's. Their goddess is hard to read. She seems alternatively cruel and kind. We have yet to see the infamous Davri in the flesh, but I already hate him for his selfish cruelty. Still, I am compelled to keep reading, wanting to know what will happen to everyone. I was glad to see Faraki meet his mate, and I hope he turns out better than the other high elves. This series is an addiction for me, and kind of like seeing a car wreck...I just can't turn away. I hope sweet Alvarick gets everything he wants and that the Tower elves don't destroy him, and I hope Werl gets her freedom and happiness, too. Regardless of my mixed up feelings, I loved this book and I am sitting on pins and needles waiting for the next one. I encourage you to read it and judge for yourself if you don't (at least a little) think it would serve the elves right if Huroth escaped the realm of dreams.
I received a free ARC from the author and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2022I particularly enjoyed this book in the series and it was very hard for me to put it down. I love the journey that they’re continuing on and the characters that we’re picking up along the way. I am glad that Velden is starting to maybe fight for what he wants and that Alvarick isn’t giving up on him. I’m definitely interested to see where the next book in the series goes. I’m also ecstatic for Faraki! Garq is one of my favorite side characters ever. There is also just enough steam in the book.
(I received an ARC of this book but my review is my own.)
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2022Hives of Sorrow was incredible! I’m so hooked on this series and cannot wait to read more! The characters are multi-dimensional and complex. Some I love and some I cannot stand. I love how the story is unfolding and continuing on and were meeting new characters. Love Alvarick and Velden, although Velden frustrated me to no end at times. The world building continues to be expanded and is fantastic! Overall, an outstanding read! The story was really well written, the pacing was smooth, highly recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2022Alvarick and Velden continue on their journey and while there is some good news with the breaking of the curse, their successful bonding is still not guaranteed. They are still being hunted and the world they much pass through still holds enormous challenges for them. I enjoyed all the new characters we meet here, the world building continues to be complex, surprising and interesting and I am very much looking forward to the next book in the series where hopefully the HFN here will become an HEA for these two.
