- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2022First of all, I want to say that even though this book is advertised as a progression Sci-Fi, I think it isn't really about progression. The characters increase their power throughout the story, but it feels more like a plot device than the story's focus.
At first, the book starts as a cyberpunk noir - we have a couple of detectives in a post-apocalypse world. It is fascinating to see how there are some high-level technologies like hovercars, but some other parts of life are far behind. The detectives try to do their job but face corruption and lies from the government. Things go awry very fast.
Supernatural comes to the front within several chapters and takes the place of the noir feeling. Noir is still here, but it is more subdued. The cast constantly expands, but the characters are very distinctive, so it is easy to keep pace with the new appearances.
There are so many good things about this book.
Many things could seem strange, but they have their explanations. For example, why this high-technology world has inadequate surveillance in many places? Why can some weapons be connected to people, and how do they work?
The prologue was great - something is happening, and nothing is explained. But slowly, in the following chapters, we see hints about the meaning of that prologue.
There are fun references to other popular books. Like "an ice cube's chance in the Hellscape". Yeah, I definitely know which series influenced this one.
Nevertheless, there were some aspects of the book which I didn't like.
First of all, the progression of power itself. The main hero (and most of the others) spend only a little time working on their cultivation and abilities. Usually, they get powerups and new abilities whenever the plot demands it. <spoiler> Do we need more power to help a friend? He gets the power. Does the hero need to overcome an adversary? Here is a power boost and new abilities that he can use without training. Do the heroes need to defeat even more powerful enemies? Here is another power boost. </spoiler>
And in general, I think that the power levels of different characters are higher or lower than they should be.
Next is the relationship between the main characters. <spoiler> There are only hints and cues, but it seems that Elena is falling for Itsuki. I'm not too fond of this development, but I admit that it could work out. </spoiler>
Still, these are only minor problems. I really liked the book, and I'm looking forward to reading the next one!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2022It's a cool world with some cool stuff, and I hope the author continues writing. That being said I probably won't be continuing this series. Some spoilers ahead so read at your own risk. I dont want to be too critical but theres a few fatal flaws, for one it's a very long book and I feel like I read the same 20% 5 times. Theres a lot of extremely similar heists, infiltrations, and fights. I mean the main female character is kidnapped 4 (arguably 5) times! Which is another problem the romance aspect is very very weird. I never knew how to feel about it and 900 pages in she referred to him as kinda boring and cliche? One of the weirdest book romances I've read. Also divine sense kinda made no sense like it was arbitrarily as strong or weak as it needed to be in fights. Overall I struggled through the last 30% of the book, but the world is super cool. Like 5/5 world building, 3.5/5 fights/heists and 2/5 relationships. Lot of potential but some weird stuff, still want to rate it highly because I did enjoy it but second book probably not in the cards for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2022Great read! So hard to put down that I blasted through it in only a couple of days. Never a lull, and always interesting. Really cool cyberpunk setting, while staying true to the spirit of cultivation novels. How those two elements mix is really well done. MC is a badass. Likable side characters, and cool “rival”. Super interesting world building. The cultivation for the MC is a bit fast, but it’s not like other cultivation stories have never done that before, and it makes sense here. Very very solid overall. Starting the next book now!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2025My one line for this book would be: Just hang in there! This one started out slow for me. I wasn't sure I'd keep reading but I'm glad I did. The pacing really picks up after the first quarter of the book and becomes a fun read! Great world building and magic system makes it unique and interesting.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2021Jeremy Bai, the author of the book, is the translator for the I shall see the heavens wuxia novel and when I learned that he has written a book I wasn't really sure how it will turn out. However, I was pleasently surprised, this book was great I binge read it in a week, yes that is how good it is. I think the book has the cool elements in the wuxia novels while keeping the boring tropes out, like over the for no reason cocky villians. Don't get me wrong there is some cocky villians who get their ass beat but it makes sense. Also I loved the diverrsity of the characters, their languages, their culture. It really helped flesh the new world of the novel, the world building is great!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2021First off the cyberpunk/cultivation combo is interesting and unique. I also found the main character well written for the most part. The side characters are also well done and we get brief glimpses into their personalities that you don't always get in the genre.
My primary dislike is the love triangle that begins developing later in the book. I don't enjoy them in general and this one comes across kinda juvenile. Seems the only people the primary love interests can be open and honest with is everybody but each other which is pretty strange.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2024Cyberpunk Xianxia is a subcategory I have little experience with but this is a sufficiently good example of the form to spark my interest in finding more.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2022If you like sci-fi with steampunk mixed in, and "magic", youre going to like this, I am sure.
It is best to suspend belief and enjoy a fin story. Otherwise a few bits in here will be a little disconcerting.
The writing itself is pretty good but sometimes felt repetitive. However, it never lost my interest.
Keep up the good work Mr Bai! I will definitely be looking forward to this story to play out...

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and easy read that remains interesting from cover to cover
I'll preface this review by saying that if you like wuxia, xianxia, xuanhuan, cyberpunk, fantasy, or sci-fi then I'd definitely recommend this book to you. Although it clearly isn't any single one of these genres, and leans more towards xianxia than anything else imo, it is an easy read that explains itself very well and anyone who enjoys any of those genres is likely to enjoy what they'll read here. I say this with confidence as I too personally enjoy these genres very much.
I'll also note that I read the original three books that were combined to make this one, and the additions Jeremy added in when combining the three books don't change much but they help make everything a little more clear and complete. That's the closest you'll get to a spoiler in this review.
At the start of the book, I found myself seeing a bunch of unfamiliar terms and having a lot of questions. The first few chapters revealing a lot of interesting tidbits (but not too many that I started to forget them all) and that sets you up nicely to be curious with a desire to know more but still leaves you knowing what's going on. That being said all of those questions, and more that I pick up along the way are slowly but surely answered keeping a nice balance of answering your questions and giving more as you go.
The characters are fun and memorable and even those that don't make as much appearance are still interesting and feel human in their behavior. The environment is described very well, but not in so much detail as to bore, which helps paint a mental picture as you read the story and follow along.
And most importantly I found the plot to be clever, interesting, and to flow nicely. Every chapter is meaningful and well thought out which makes it so you never feel like you're just reading filler as you go.
Overall, I was very happy to read this story. Happy enough that I've actually read it three times now. Since I rarely bother to read any story more than once, I consider this the highest compliment.

5.0 out of 5 stars loved it, cant wait to read the book 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars Addicting read, keeps you wanting more!
The Sun's Blood, book 1 of the Heirs of Sun and Storm, is the new release of the first two books as well as the new third book of The Nine Heavens and Ten Earths series combined into one.
It's a more polished version and well worth the read. The book reads seamlessly and always makes you want to read just one more page even after reaching the end!
I enjoyed the unique mix of sci-fi and fantasy with the elements of Chinese martial arts magic (cultivation).
If you have read The Heretic Peacekeeper and/or Secrets of the True Heaven before, don't skip the additional prologue in the beginning, otherwise the story remains the same up until the last third.
I recommend it for anyone that enjoys some young adult fantasy or sci-fi.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read Cyberpunk Cultivation Novel
Jeremy 'Deathblade' Bai is an experienced translator of Chinese Fantasy Novels and that knowledge has been put into this novel.
Many books have said they combine Cyberpunk and Cultivation but this is the first I have read that I feel embodies both these genres truly.
The novel paints a picture of a dystopian city sealed from the ruins of a devastated world. The city will remind many of the scenes from Bladerunner, a bleak city but one teeming with life.
The characters are varied and interesting, as the story progresses you become more connected to them wanting to know what will come.
The story is one of personal growth and discovery, uncovering the mysteries and secrets of the people, city, and world. Each chapter peels away more layers but still leaves much more to be discovered.
The Cultivation is well thought out and interesting. As the character develops we learn more about cultivation and as they discover secrets of the world how cultivation has shaped it and the city they live in.
If you are a fan of Bladerunner and Shadowrun read this novel; if you are a fan of Xianxia novels read this novel; if you are a fan of great stories and interesting characters read this novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome change to wuxia
A great read. A very modern update of the genre. The author has crafted a interesting and week details world. The story is smooth, some times a bit too much amphasis on the romance and not enough development for the side character
