    General Adam Holmes has dedicated his life to keeping the survivors alive. While on the run to Enclave, everyone is tired, worn, and at the end of their limits, especially him. The pressure of leading is eating away at him and he can’t lean on anyone for help. Liberty Lawler can see that Adam is at his breaking point and she forces him to take a break. She vows to spend each day finding joy in life and she knows it's time to help Adam find his own reason to go on.

    This book was nonstop action, emotion, and romance as the survivors make their way to the Enclave and avoid the aliens. Holmes has been a solid, dependable, and strong figure throughout the series. In the last book we saw that the burden of leadership was resting heavy on his shoulders and it just continues to get worse. He is burdened by the guilt of every person he loses or can’t save. Holmes was a surprisingly sweet man under that starch uniform and he can really kick butt when he needs too.

    “I need you, Liberty. You’re my light. Your smile, your voice, just watching you sleep. You give me more than a reason to keep fighting, you give me a reason to keep breathing.”

    Liberty is a strong independent woman who spends each day living life to the fullest. She is the perfect partner for Holmes because she shows him how to live life to the fullest, even while taking care of everyone. I also think she makes a great partner because she sees the other side of leadership by reminding people to find happiness during the bad times and to keep moral up. She listens and makes a difference, not only to Holmes, but to everyone in the Blue Mountain Base.

    Also I just loved how crazy Tane and Hemi were in this one. I cannot wait to get to their books because I know they will be good.

    This isn't a synopsis of the book (you already know that by reading the teaser), rather this is why I liked the series and why you may also enjoy reading it.

    As Anna mentioned somewhere; 'The Hell Squad books have stand-alone romances in them but the action arc of the invading aliens grows with each book. Many readers have entered the series with later books and they haven't been lost, but, characters from the early stories do appear in later books and I really think it adds something to the reading experience to read them in order.'

    Also reading the books in order is a good idea as each book follows a series of sequential progression toward the potential elimination of the aliens called raptors. As such, if you didn't read them in order you may miss part of the story that may be an important factor such as what a 'Hunter' or a 'Darkswift' is. I do feel that Anna does a great job giving brief explanations of things to help keep new readers informed and remind former readers where we left off. Although one thing I would strongly recommend is a character list so readers can refresh their memories of the previous books and characters. The characters make appearances in the books and sometimes I can't remember who is who (or Anna's going to need to write faster) ;) Anyway -
    Reading Order: Marcus, Cruz, Gabe, Reed, Roth, Noah, Shaw, and Holmes
    Book 8 is about General Adam Holmes and Miss Liberty Lawler.

    GENERAL ADAM HOLMES is in his 40's and had a military-straight bearing he’d developed in the United Coalition Army and a head of dark hair with a brush of distinguished gray at his temples. He was classically handsome, and his eyes were a piercing blue. He was the top man in this last little outpost of humanity. He was a general to the bone and always looked spit and polish. Everything about him screamed money and a fancy education, so not surprisingly, he tended to rub the troops the wrong way. Although they do respect him. He had a handsome face, like movie-star handsome, and a dash of gray at his temples that suited him. His khaki uniform was always pressed and neat. Holmes could be just as dangerous as the Hell Squad members in the right situation. Plenty of people underestimated him, blinded by his neat façade.

    LIBERTY LAWLER was a beautiful blonde and she knew how to work it. She took care of the base’s clothing store, and ran a successful underground market in scavenged beauty products. Considering the world had gone to hell, the woman spent a long time ensuring her mane of hair stayed healthy and blonde. She was a curvy 35 year old 'beautician' [she cut hair] who had a tough life before the aliens attacked Earth so her goal was to live each day to the fullest and be happy about the little things. Liberty was funny and unapologetic about the fact she liked sex with well-muscled soldiers. The harder and sweatier the better.

    Adam and Liberty had been acquaintances but that developed into friendship and worked its way to love. Neither one of them really wanted to be in love. Liberty came from an abusive ex who said he loved her and Adam didn't have time for love with all the demands of being in charge. In addition he felt that Liberty would tire of him and leave him soon just like his ex wife did. This developing relationship is happening while the convoy is trying to get to the Enclave for shelter amidst fighting the aliens while in route.

    Anna Hackett does an excellent job with character development! Each character talks uniquely. They act independently. They have their own mannerisms and idiosyncrasies. I think that's one of the things I enjoy most when reading Anna Hackett's work. Sure the tense plot and hot sex scenes are all great too but the fact that the reader can really connect with the various characters in Anna's work is a big plus!

    Definitely a must read for sci-fi romance fans!

    Holmes: Hell Squad Book 8 focuses on General Adam Holmes the ranking officer and leader of the Blue Mountain refugees fleeing from Blue Mountain after their base was over-ran by the Gizziad, the reptilian alien invaders of Earth. He is confident soldier and leader who has done his best with what little he had at hand. He has been a loner and kept his distance from other refugees in order to be able to make the decisions that he must make for the best of all under his command.

    Liberty Lawler is the person to go to when one needs something that is in short supply or not in the limited stores of Blue Mountain and even now on the run to their new sanctuary in the Enclave she is able to produce much needed and wanted items from a bar of home-made scented soap to the rare bottle of single malt Scotch. She's everyone's friend and always a good laugh at parties. She's watched Adam Holmes from a distance.

    Swift Wing convoy is moving as quickly as possible with the cobbled together vehicles travelling under a cloaking signal even with the Gizziad dogging them and sending every vicious weapon they have to try to stop the convoy from reaching their destination. Attack after attack forces Holmes to fight every step of the way.

    Dieses Buch war mal wieder actionreich und spannend, aber obendrein gab es so traurige Szenen, so starke Verluste, dass ich immer wieder schwer schlucken musste.
    Ich hoffe von ganzem Herzen, dass diese Reihe ein Happy End haben wird, bei dem die abscheulichen Raptoren von der Erde vertrieben werden.

    Another fantastic instalment from the Hell squad series. This time we watch General Holmes and the beautiful Liberty come together. They make a passionate and intense couple.

    Although these books give us a HEA at least so far its the journey the whole group are embarking on that makes this series so incredible. We watch them fight to survive, to beat back the hord against unprecedented odds but the don't give up, they band together. That's a powerful message. This writer has a serious gift of imagination and I can't wait to see how they adapt to the Enclave.
