Home Plate (Easton U Pirates Book 2) Kindle Edition

Dominic Girard

My final baseball season with the Easton U Pirates feels bittersweet. I'd like to go out on a high note, graduate, and focus on the family business. But a certain pitcher is making senior year a challenge. Not only because Maclain is stubborn as hell, but because he makes me feel things I never have about another guy. With each snarky comment and hard-won grin, he reveals a little more of himself, and before I know it, I'm in over my head.

Mason Maclain

I'll be graduating college this year, which also means the end of baseball, a sport I've played my entire life. It feels like a significant chapter is coming to a close, leaving behind a void I'm unwilling to face. Something else I don't want to face? The impossibly charming Pirates catcher, whose quick wit and killer smirk poke holes in all my defenses. With each lingering look and quiet exchange, I want to push him away and pull him closer at the same time. I've never felt this intense draw before, and there's no way I'll ever admit it.

When Coach proposes a team-building activity to improve our chemistry on the field, little does he know things are heating up behind the scenes as well. A flicker of a connection sparks into a firestorm, and soon Girard and I are experiencing things for the first time—together. But outside the haven of our hotel room, reality infringes all too soon. I'm clinging to my fraying relationship with my dad, and for Girard, coming out is still scary, loving family or not. Resisting the pull to Girard seems futile, but I struggle at every turn. Any longer and I'll lose the only person who makes my pulse thud quicker than a fastball over home plate.

There's a pitcher-and-catcher joke in there somewhere.

While I enjoyed Kellan and Brody's story I must say I love this one more. Mason and Dominic starting as not necessarily enemies but not friends I think is what made this book better for me. Reading how they grow to be friends and more while also coming to terms with who they are themselves is something of an emotional rollercoaster at times. I felt so sorry for Mason and wanted nothing more than to hug and protect the prickly pitcher. But seeing how he was treated as an afterthought by his stepdad did shine a light on why he was so closed off and moody. This was a great book that I thoroughly enjoyed.

I enjoyed this, Girard was so patient with Maclain and I loved how he cared for him, he observed and asked a ton of questions to get to know him better. All the little details like the candy and the bee were really cute. I have one complaint though, I needed more of that happily ever after, I wanted to see more of Maclain being happy with his new found family

This is a slow developing romance which I gave four stars to after reading it but changed it because these two characters, Mason Maclain and Dominic Girard, simply would not get out of my head.

Enemies in the first book of the series, they had to come together in at least one respect--Maclain is the best pitcher on the small Kentucky college team and Girard is the team's catcher. (Note: What I like about this series is that the players are usually called by their last names, which is a baseball tradition, lends credibility).

In any case, prompted a bit by team manager-bat boy Kellan (from the fist book) and his father the team's coach, Maclain and Girard are forced to get to know each other in a rather logical way--they are to become roommates on the road in their senior year.

Girard, whose loving Italian-American family nearby operates a bowling alley, looks upon this arrangement with a great deal more interest than Maclain, whose stepfather raised him after his mother died and is now what you might call uninterested in maintaining a family bond.

These two family situations complicate both their lives and eventually the lust that develops between them. After the lust comes the boil and the chill and the lukewarm and the heat. In the end, I liked these two ordinary dudes and am looking forward to the next in the series.

Girard and MacLain are like oil and water. They are at odds in spite having to have chemistry as a pitcher and a catcher. Both guys are secretly crushing on the other. Neither has had relationships with guys before.

MacLain is absolutely heartbreaking. The guy has baggage and needs to work through it. Girard is sunny and the perfect foil for the angsty MacLain. The book is a great bi-awakening story.

Second book of a great new adult/sports romance series. While the books are technically stand alone they should be read in order. The characters overlap.

I really enjoyed Dominic and Mason. They had a very tense teammate relationship to start out. Not exactly the best of friends, but there was something simmering underneath. Once they admitted their attraction to each other, the sparks flew. I liked that they were new to this situation and were figuring things out together. Things built slowly between them, which I loved. Dominic’s family was the best. I loved how they welcomed Mason with open arms. My heart broke over Mason’s family life. I was very happy to see him receive that kind of love and support. I am really loving this series and the amazing characters.

I enjoyed reading this novel was sad that step dad did not come to his games since he wanted some support. The ending was to short wanted to see if they got married and what happened after.

I knew I'd love this book because of the angst and raw emotion behind Mason's carefully crafted walls. The way Dom works his way into Masons mind and heart was so sweet and I loved every second of their love story.
My only gripe that I have would be how Dom's internal dialog and then actions almost seemed contradictory at times. Hed precive something and then act totally clueless when actually confronting mace or his own feelings. Despite this I loved this book and highly recommend it!

“Just you and me, figuring it out.”

Maclain and Girard can't stand each other, but they work well together and they also don't actually dislike one another; they just can't understand why they're attracted to each other. Men.

    Tropes:
    – Sports romance (baseball teammates)
    – Forced proximity
    – Found family

This was so cute!! Maclain and Girard are so precious and the way they learned everything together was just absolutely wholesome. I adored their relationship–how comfortable they were with the other person and how that trust slowly built over time. Girard is an absolute sweetheart, the one who kept reaching out his hand even when Maclain was being prickly. Such a precious story of these two men finding out more about themselves and each other and embracing that change the way it should be. My only qualm was that the writing style was so much telling rather than showing, and while I was still invested in the characters and felt their development, I almost felt like I was missing out on some of the other moments because of how much seemed to be off-page. The found family trope in this is *chefs kiss*. Like really. On their own, Girard's family is just precious, but the way they basically adopt Maclain was so adorable. Finished this in pretty much one sitting and was so cute and wholesome. Love them!

5.0 out of 5 stars good read
Reviewed in Canada on May 25, 2024
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The grouchiness, the turmoil and the slow relationship. It wasn’t like typical U romance books where they burn hot after the second chapter and most of the book is them hooking up and keeping secrets, this was more of a journey and starting small, not feeling fully comfortable, until the feels...it felt more real.

I liked that unlike other books where there is someone coming into their sexuality as either bisexual or gay but fearful of what others would think, where most of the book is spent with that character constantly degrading themselves or other members of the LGBT+ community and repeatedly denying their sexuality, in this book, none of the degrading or denial was there, it was more fear of being alone after revealing his sexuality, rather than a disgust in himself.

I loved that the author was able to carry the feeling of the book throughout the entire book. It wasn’t one where he has one dinner with the family and he has forgotten all about his hurt and his trepidations, or where the relationship with his stepfather becomes volatile or even does a 180. The author stuck to the atmosphere and the story flowed.

I loved their story and the pacing of this relationship was incredible. Some areas may have been a little bit predictable but I would definitely still consider this a five star read! Really supportive side characters and my heart just melted for Mason!

I found MacLain and Girard's story to be alot more engaging. MacLain especially was a very endearing character. And it was slow burn and angsty but it was also tender and made me smile loony with how innocent their exploration of eachother was.
Great book and I'm definitely going to miss the baseball guys.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and heartwrenching read!
Reviewed in Australia on February 28, 2021
This was both beautiful and heartwrenching! There was so much more to Maclain/Mason than we saw in the first book - how he kept his sanity at times is beyond me. Girard/Dominic was the perfect counterpart for him - their chemistry was intense, both before and after they gave into it. I loved the Girard family and how accepting and welcoming they were. I also loved seeing the support and acceptance their team had for them, and I'm not specifically talking about when they came out, rather how they operated as a team and looked out for each other. Definitely a book I'd recommend, as with anything by this author - just go read book 1 first if you haven't already.
