House of Horror: Short story Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 25 ratings

When Mathew Hansen first heard the disembodied voice of a woman through the wall of his new London flat, he thought he imagined it. Mind playing tricks, in a flat that settled and creaked like an old woman. Or maybe too much booze fuelling his nightmares.

The voice couldn’t be real; just the wind, moving around the old Victorian house.

Besides, his bangable neighbour Amanda couldn’t hear the strange chanting sounds. She was just messing with him when she said she did. A little payback for sleeping with her and never calling her back.

It must be his imagination.

E. J Bennett is the author of the YA/Fantasy novel, “Secrets of the mind” and also the children's book author of “My little brother”, which features her own children.

E.J Bennett is a stay at home mom of two young children, a girl age 5 and a boy age 2. Due to her little boy been born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate, E. J Bennett found that she has no time for a full time job.

She wanted to do more with her life than be a stay at home parent. She wrote her first children's book “My little brother” to help other children, as well as families who are expecting or have a baby born with a cleft lip. Although cleft lip and palate defects are one of the most common birth defects she felt there was not much information out there, especially for young children like her daughter, who did not fully understand why her baby brother had a poorly mouth.

E.J Bennett then went on to write her first YA/Fantasy novel, “Secrets of the mind”

E.J Bennett lives in an old mining village in South Yorkshire, England, and loves to spend time at the holiday resort Skegness.

She loves to write and is looking forward to realising Book 2 in her “Secrets” series, hopefully in the next six to eight months.

This starts out as a normal enough horror, with a man, Mathew Hansen, experiencing a haunting in his flat. He’s a selfish, thoughtless, user of women, who likes one night stands as he is unable to commit. He has a troubled back story which partly explains his behaviour, but never enough to excuse him.
He hears voices and bangs, experiences delusions, and an increasingly physical presence manifests in his flat over the course of a few nights. Eventually he flees the flat, leaving his one night stand alone. I won’t say anymore, but the end is unexpected, and a really good twist in the tale.
This is told in the third person, which is a change from the first person for EJ Bennett, and I must admit I think the story and writing is stronger for it.
    A very satisfying short read!

There's a world of horror awaiting Matthew Hansen - and it's just possible he deserves it.
The serial philanderer finds himself haunted by voices in his apartment - at first he doubts himself, but when the girls he brings home hear them too, he turns to a friend for help.
    Then... things get worse.
A claustrophobic tale from EL Bennett, this is another from her that could easily fit into the world of such shows as The Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits. There's an element of modern moral fable to it - and it's compelling to read, even as much as you might find its lead character a disagreeable sort.
I felt the dialogue had a tendency to be a little overdone, particularly as characters stared death in the face - but this is a solid tale from EJ Bennett. with an ending sure to unsettle.

Think the next time when you decide to play with people’s feelings and discard them when they aren’t of use to you anymore…
Matt has been tormented by strange noises in his bachelor’s pad for quite some time now. Only, when the situation took a turn for the worse and even the walls themselves started to show signs of decay around him, transforming in a sinister manner right in front of his eyes, Matt realized that something wasn’t right either with his apartment, or with his head. However, just like any condemned person, who refuses to listen to his inner voice and even the voices around him – exactly what Amanda, his neighbor, tried to do talking some sense into him – Matt refuses to change his ways, and soon his life turns into a very real hell, a house of horrors, from which there’s no escape…
I absolutely loved this short story. It was dark, chilling to the bone and haunting, and I honestly didn’t want it to end. If you’re a fan of horror or thriller genre, this one is definitely for you. Five huge stars.

I've often thought that shallow, selfish men like Matthew should be rounded up and imprisoned somewhere so they couldn't hurt anyone else. Ms. Bennett has taken that though to a whole new level. The story is tense, spooky and filled with twists to keep you on the edge of your seat. Well worth the read..

Readers are thrown right into the thick of things in House of Horrors. This is a well written, quick read with creepy and mysterious elements. For myself, I didn't find the story overly suspenseful or scary but I enjoyed it all the same. I would read more by this author. 3.5/5 stars

Ok tale of terror where a womanizer gets his up-comings in an ironic ending. The writing is quite competent if not particularly riveting or suspenseful. Other reviewers found the ending to be an amazing plot twist, I thought it was fairly obvious early on. Still, there was some entertainment value here and it is a short read. Recommended.

So, we all know the basic horror tropes, but this one’s not quite the same as most. While some tropes just can’t be avoided, this one took some turns I just couldn’t see coming. While characters seem to be flat and be nothing more than the generic pancake in this genre, this little read breaks that mold and runs out of the gate with backstories and lives that leave you questioning who you want to ‘win’ right up to the very end.

Matthew is a player as he brings home a different woman nightly and throws them out as soon as he is done with them. He begins hearing things in his flat and it progressively gets worse. He goes to his next door neighbor Amanda for help who also happens to be a previous conquest of his. I won’t say much more than this as it is a short story and don’t want to give too much away.

I did not know what direction E.J. Bennett was going to go with House of Horror. I did enjoy it as with the horror in the story there is also a lesson to it.

I look forward to reading more by E.J. Bennett.

Mathew is a young man who uses women to satisfy his needs but does not care for them. All that changes when he shifts into a new flat and meets his new neighbour. She insists she can't hear voices in her apartment but Mathew is no longer sure whether she's telling the truth or he's going mad. As in all good horror stories, the climax is at the very end when the real truth of what is going on is revealed. Enjoyed this short story very much!

A spooky tale of a man called Matt and how he belives his house to be haunted. He even goes to his neighbor for help. Does she know more then she lets on. At least she warned him. But he didn't listen oh well poor Matt. What a ending for him Enjoy Matt.
