- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2014This was a great and very entertaining anthology. Carole Gill does an excellent job with each story and creature of finding just the right nerve to set the tingles all over the back of your neck. This is a horror anthology just as the cover says. If you do not like to read horror then you will not care for this book, but... if you are a horror fan then you NEED this anthology! The stories flow and the plot of each story is wonderfully written. There are so many different monsters in this book the no matter what your biggest fear is or your favorite one to read about you are gonna find it without fail.
Very much enjoyed and highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2014First off, I received a complimentary copy in exchange for a review.
If you are looking for a book that you can read a few pages here and few pages there (especially on short commutes) this is not the book for you. Gill has put together a book with enough horror to fill you quota for the year. In these pages you will find vampires, werewolves, DaVinci, a touch of SF, zombies, and more.
If you are a fan of Gill's Blackstone Vampire Series, you will love the prequel (although it is far too short and should be expanded into a novella, at least) and there is the return of Eco.
All the short stories in this collection are fresh and enjoyable. Some more than others and many have unexpected endings, for example Beacon. You'll love it and it opens the anthology.
As a reviewer I was thinking of reviewing each story and judging each on its own merit, but this collection is too large with too much to enjoy. If I were to pick my favourite story, it would be: First. This tale kicks the rear of all the other tales in my opinion.
As with opinion, each has their own and with all these tantalising tales to devour, I'm sure you'll find several you'll like and a few you'll love.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2016House of Horrors, by Carole Gill is an author who seeks to bring back a style, similar to those of authors of the seventies. Back when movies staring Vincent Price, Christopher Lee and even as far back as Bela Lugosi! The horror is this tale was mild and implied more than described. As a matter of fact, not much was described at all!
The stories of House of Horrors fail to capture the true terror the word 'Horror' offers. In Better to Die, a grandfather and and granddaughter work a lighthouse that assists sailors and steers them to safety. Now that one- wow! AMAZING! The lure, then the surprise was perfect but it happened way too fast. The story felt rushed and that's crazy for a short story, but Zombie Winter...
Zombie Winter was a huge flop for me. The story just drops you in the middle of, not just a zombie attack, but evidently a mega Global Warming storm! Nothing set this story up and the way things happened, I laughed at the progression and almost felt let down- had it not been for the fact, the ebook was free. I didn't lose anything but time. The other stories were okay. They were easier to get through but the lack of detail in some was annoying. This author will tell an excellent story in one, then follow up with one that tosses out information instead of allowing the reader to flow through. It was off-putting...

- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2019I have to apologize to the author for this review, but it really needs to be professional edited, and if it was, fire that editor. I learned from the first book I wrote that, if you are not an English Lit. graduate (in most cases), to always have your books edited by a professional (if you are an indie author). I thought my first book was the best thing until I got it back from the editor. There was more red than there was words in the book. And this book is not far from that. I could not finish this book. I only made it to the third story and then jumped around a little hoping for it to get better. I was disappointed. I recommend sending at least one of your books to a professional editor to show how much work a book needs before it is published. This goes for anyone who wishes to publish a book. Keep up the writing because it looks like you have a following, but I recommend an editor to hone in your skills. Good luck.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2014I just finished House of Horrors and LOVED it. Being a horror movie fan since I was a kid, I thought all of these short stories were spooky as heck. Carole Gill knows how to weave a story and some included a bit of creepy history! I truly whined out loud in fright a couple of times!! I'm not one to go into great detail, but if you are a fan of horror, you won't want to miss this one!! High marks to Ms. Gill.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2015For crying out loud, folks, there's a difference between writing and typing. This book is the latter. Anyone can put words on a page; apparently (in these days of self publishing) nobody can actually write. Not this "author," certainly. This collection might be suitable for young, and indiscriminate, teens. For anyone else, fuggidaboudit.

5.0 out of 5 stars A veritable 'blood fest' for vampire lovers!
"That was why vampires always went for the blood-engorged organs first, drinking and savoring the precious nectar."
Gill, Carole (2014-06-07). House Of Horrors (Kindle Location 4181). Creativia. Kindle Edition.
For those who like their horror in short, sharp (no pun intended) doses, I can do no more than recommend Carole Gill's 'House of Horrors' to you. Here is a collection of sixteen short stories that take readers not so much on a walk on the wild side, as a journey through the dark side. Ms. Gill's imagination and inspiration takes on various guises in this collection of stories that ranges from the prequel to her Blackstone Moor vampires series, to my personal favourite, 'Better to Die', a rabid take on the heroic Grace Darling story. This was not one for the faint-hearted and opens the collection in spectacular fashion. The book takes readers on a wonderful roller coaster ride with many different variations on the vampire theme being featured, and I am not going to spoil reader's enjoyment by going into details here, other than to simply say, try it, you won't be disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK
Some good stories, some not so good. I found the writing style a little amateurish in places.

5.0 out of 5 stars After reading this you'll hope you never meet a vampire
If you like books about vampires and Gore this is definitely a book to read. Like any collection of short story type books, the reader will have some that they like more than others, even a best one. Mine was the first story. I loved it. To find yours, read the book. Then try not to bump into any vampires.
