How to Lure a Hunter (VRC: Vampire Related Crimes Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 2,295 ratings

Alexei
When Marcus Church brings his brother Claude in to help solve an unusual murder, I’m positive he did it just to disrupt my monotonous life. None of my coworkers in the Vampire Related Crimes unit seem to understand that I want to keep a wall between me and everyone else—especially Claude, who does everything he can to break through it with an annoying smile. After more vampires begin to die, Claude pinpoints the actions of the killers to a group of vampire hunters, leaving us in a race to stop them. When I discover that I have a target on my back, I’m surprised that Claude insists on staying by my side, even when things go from bad to worse. I’m determined to keep him out—I’ve lost enough people in my life—but I can’t stop feeling something every time he breaks through.

Claude
When I reunited with my brother, I never imagined it’d throw me right into Alexei Karsynov’s path. He’s short-tempered, stubborn, and dangerously adorable whenever he smiles—he just doesn’t realize it yet. When Marcus asks me to help with a case, it gives me the excuse I need to get closer to Alexei, but what I discover threatens to change everything. Suddenly, I find myself wanting to do anything to protect Alexei and to see him smile, despite his efforts to keep his distance from others. I’m determined to show him that he can’t live in the past when his future is so much brighter.

How to Lure a Hunter is a 107k word book that contains: Clothes so bright they could cause retina damage, a ridiculous amount of gifts showered on a reluctant recipient, a cranky Russian with a soft spot he tries to hide, a library full of books that need to be treated with the proper respect, some possibly unhealthy sibling teasing, and a sunshiny 300-year-old vampire with an unexpected protective streak.

Another fun addition to the series that focuses on Alexis and Claude’s story! They were complete opposites and so much fun to read.
I really enjoyed all the humorous moments and crazy antics of the characters. I loved how we got to see previous characters as well and how they all got along and interacted.
Alexis was dark, brooding, and the definition of grumpy. Claude was the complete opposite loud, super nice, and colorful.
Their relationship was so much fun to read with a lot of push and pull from the characters, plenty of simmering tension, hilarious insults and moments, and of course some steam!

    Tropes to enjoy here:

    - opposite attract
    - grumpy/sunshine
    - hurt/comfort
    - one bed

Maybe. 3.5 or 3.75 for this one. Marcus and Finn are way more fleshed out characters than Claude and Alexei. Even after finishing this book, I feel like I know nothing about Claude. He’s been traveling and collecting things for 300 years? I hate how everyone is so mean to him and is constantly excluding him, demeaning him, and making fun of things he likes.

We never really see into Claude’s head to know how he feels about this. At least when Finn was teased in the other books about his height or about being human he, A) teased back, and B) we saw in his head how he often allowed the teasing as a way to disarm people or to distract them so they wouldn’t find out his secrets. We see Alexei use this tactic a bit, but it comes across as more sad and depressing rather than a clever trick.

Claude also could never really tell us what attracted him to Alexei. Honestly, I feel like I have a much better understanding of Alexei and dimitri’s relationship from the flashbacks than I do Claude & Alexei. I also didn’t care for the vague hints dripped about DeGray since the previous books led us to anticipate a pairing between him and Karsyn.

I mostly enjoyed learning Alexei’s backstory, but it was lacking in parts. We never learn anything about his mother or sister. His relationship with Dimitri seems manipulative, but late in the book we are shown something different about their relationship that just didn’t ring true to me at all and kind of ruined the climax of the book in a way.

Mostly I wish Claude was written as more likable and less of a punchline. It would be more believable if Marcus was the only one mean to him and others were nicer. It seems plenty of people have liked Claude on his travels, so everyone thinking he is annoying and a joke doesn’t ring true with how much of a playboy we are also told he has been. Winters is usually better than this, so it was disappointing.

Alexei is a vampire who works for the VRC. He is currently working to find the hunters who are murdering vampires. With help from his friends of the VRC and Claude he will expose a secret society that is attached to a past that he wants to keep hidden. This is the third book in the series. Marcus and Finn from book 1 and 2 return to aid Alexei. Claude is Marcus's twin brother. Claude is immediatly drawn to Alexei. He is determined to make Alexei fall in love with him. Claude is a sweet, romantic vampire who loves fashion and books. He is also protective of Alexei. When Alexei's past is revealed, it is Claude who becomes his support. I loved the relationship between the two men. Claude was funny and sweet. He was also all about taking care of Alexei. This was a great addition to the series.

How to Lure a Hunter is an excellent continuation of the VRC series.
I enjoyed seeing the main characters from the previous books and assuring myself that they are doing well and happily disrupting the peace of those around them. Hey. It's what they do, and I like it.
The author gives the reader plenty of snark and banter to cushion the harshness of the crimes these guys are investigating. The procedural aspect of the story is interesting, and I was on tenterhooks as the book progressed.
Claude and Karsyn's story is everything I wanted it to be. The backstory for each is compelling and gives insight into their character. I wanted to thump them a couple of times to make them understand what I could clearly see, but that angst just made their story more fulfilling in the end. They are an odd couple, opposites attract and all that, but their time together is filled with burgeoning emotion and a heaping helping of passion.
How to Lure a Hunter is just what I expect from this author: a storyline with good flow, well-developed characters, well-placed humor, believable and satisfying love and passion, and the slight hint (and sometimes much more than a hint) of selfish meanness that underlies all of this author's work. It gives me all the feels.
I look forward to more from this author.

This author is definitely one of my favorites. I love the snark and humor and harassment in these books.

For this installment, in particular, I have to say that the evil ex trope is one that I am highly critical of. I was ok with it for most of this story, because the ex's part is so built into Alexei's behavior and standoffishness. It's so obvious that Dmitri, the ex, would be reappearing in Alexei's life and you actually start getting impatient for his reveal. I would have been good with all of it if there hadn’t been a moment that makes zero sense other than it being there to make Dmitri extra villainous. It's such an unnecessary twist that I kind of want to take away a star and just ridicule how it makes NO SENSE, but I won't because I won't let that ruin this for me. I'm tempted, but I get a mental picture of Finn and I can't be that critical. It would be like kicking him or Claude and I can't. I totally get why others may be critical of this installment, though.

Great story for lifting one's spirit and I was looking forward for Claude's story. His sassiness and persistence in wining over Alexei was a lot of fun since the previous book. And in this one his smart-mouth and goofiness were a saving grace in the beginning because sometimes Alexei constantly mistreating Claude, in a teasing manner or not, bothered me a little. It felt too close to verbal abuse. I've enjoyed the book much more after learning about Alexei's past, his struggles with forgiving himself and reading his journey to allow himself to be loved and loving.

Alice Winters has to be my favorite writer. She does books that have characters that are snarky especially well. a prime example is this book. I have read the rest of this terrific series and I really didn’t know how she would be able to write a convincing relationship between Claude and Alexei. I shouldn’t have been worried as Alice seems to specialize in bringing the weirdest characters together. I can just imagine her sitting there in front of her computer rubbing her hands together and cackling at what she puts these characters through. This book is a joy from start to finish. I recommend this series highly.

WOW! Alexei and Claude's story was simply wonderful. From all the banter between them and Finn and Marcus, full of hilarious dialogues and situations that got me laughing aloud a big part of the book, to the unexpected backstory that caught me since the begining and kept me at he edge of my seat the whole time, this book is as good as the previous 2 books in the series. This time the author gave us the opportunity to know more about Karsynov and Claude in the middle of a very interesting and eventful plot. I can't wait to read what is next in the VRC series.
