Hug It Out (Haven Hart Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 1,276 ratings

Riordan Darcy has spent the last fourteen years building a name for himself as a notorious assassin. He travels the world taking the lives of some of the worst humanity has to offer, leaving his signature on every victim.

Riordan becomes unhappy and withdrawn from the world after a job goes horribly wrong and he makes the decision to get out of the life he was forced into, so long ago. When his meddling, older sister gives him a birthday gift that’s impossible to refuse, his plans to leave his life of crime take a backseat when he’s forced to protect the life of a veritable stranger.

When professional hugger and TLC provider, Teddy Harris, is offered a month-long companionship contract, he’s hard pressed to turn it down. Cuddler by day and a video game reviewer by night, Teddy’s need to make people feel loved and cared for is what drives him. When he meets Riordan Darcy, professional challenge and personal temptation collide, making it nearly impossible for him to endure a whole month with the gorgeous, enigmatic man without falling head over heels in love.

When a mole is discovered within Riordan’s organization, relationships are compromised, and people’s lives are in danger. Time isn’t on their side, and they discover answers can’t always be found by hugging it out when someone is hell-bent on eliminating each and every one of them. Can Riordan and Teddy survive long enough to fall in love, or will they die trying?

Leslie performed the voice of Teddy, while Alces did Riordan. These two do another amazing job, giving the characters vulnerability, humor, and personality.-- "Joyfully Jay"

I shall re-read this story
After reading Davidson King’s “Snow Falling”, I simply had to read, “Hug it Out” and thank goodness I was kindly sent an ARC. This author just keeps on writing wonderful stories that are just unforgettable for me.“Hug It Out” is endearingly sweet yet so sexy and the same time deeply emotional. The world needs more individuals like Teddy who is funny, snarky, giving and loving. It was a funny coincidence that I read an article about “professional cuddlers” so naturally I was engrossed in this story. The author showed a lot of respect to those who try to provide an empathic helping profession in today’s times where society is riddled with many lonely individuals. I love how Davidson King mentioned about professional boundaries in the story that added more credibility to this growing trend of job.Riordan is a lovable guy; an alpha paid killer who lives with regret, guilt and PTSD due to a recent job that went wrong. His emotions and reactions to situations felt realistic and congruent to his nature….I felt so emotional in some of the pages because of the way he reacted. I really love this prickly pear of a guy.The attraction between Riordan and Teddy was sweet, romantic and certainly sizzling. Great plot. Wonderful dialogue. This author brings 1st POV into life, seriously, as I read each sentence I felt like the characters themself. I LOVE LOVE LOVEEEEE it!

    THE CHARACTERS

    Riordan Darcy:

My father and I were almost identical with our black hair and green eyes. The only thing we Darcys all had in common was our fair skin…

Riordan Darcy was a sexy man and when I laid eyes on him for the first time, my body tingled. He was gorgeous. There was a mysteriousness that intrigued me. I was grateful for summer in that moment simply because it meant less clothes. His tank top and navy shorts clung to every muscle on his tall body. It was easy to see he took pride in his appearance, and while I would have loved to have seen long hair flowing in the breeze, I recognized the buzz cut suited him. But it was his eyes that drew me closer. Green emeralds that twinkled with mischief and danger. He was on full display. Big, strong, and everything I craved in a man.

    Teddy Harris:

The first thing about him that caught my attention was his mop of brown curls. They bounced when he walked, radiating happiness. The white polo shirt he wore rested over narrow shoulders. His physique became even more noticeable when a breeze pressed the cotton against his frame, accentuating his lankiness. His legs went on for miles, proving he was almost as tall as me, and there was something about his khaki shorts that made my cock twitch. He may be nerdy with those black-rimmed glasses, but he was a looker. As he got closer, I chuckled when the freckles on his nose came into view. This guy was just as adorable as he was sexy.

    THE STORY

What a great, fun, funny, intense and action packed story. This is a fitting second book in the Haven Heart universe and a great second book for this new author.

Even though this is the second book in the Haven Hart universe don’t worry, it is a fully stand alone novel and you will not miss anything if you don’t read the first book, Snow Falling. You will see some characters from the first book, however they work perfectly in Hugging It Out.

Riordan is a wonderful character. Totally alpha-type male; big and strong and built like a rock, he still craves a life beyond his career as a killer and dangerous hit-man. A killer with scruples who will only take on a hit he feels brings justice, his life is thrown off kilter when a hit goes horribly wrong, throwing him off completely. Enter his sister, a power house like him in her own right, she arranges for Teddy to help his brother come back to his normal self, even though she doesn’t know exactly what it is he does. No one knows what he does.

Enter Teddy. The handsome, geeky gamer. A beta tester for new games he also has his own company of emotional support workers. Teddy’s passion for life is to bring love and well being to those in need and when Riordan and Teddy meet, the sparks fly.

As Riordan learns that there is a mole inside the organization he works for that is trying to bring them down Teddy comes into the cross hairs of the mole and Riordan must fight to keep Teddy safe, even to the extent of hurting Teddy and putting Teddy’s feelings for Riordan into serious jeopardy.

A great story with wonderfully strong characters which, if I must say so seem as even stronger characters than those in the first book.

    THE WRITING

This author’s writing has continued improving in her second book. What a wonderfully told story.

The creation of these two very strong characters and a very well developed cast of secondary characters makes for riveting reading. These secondary characters come alive in a vibrant way that I couldn’t help but love them and they deserve follow up books on their own. Black, and Lee and Jones, are richly written characters that are knocking at the door wanting to tell their tale.

Regardless, I am thinking that Davidson King is becoming one of my go to authors. So far this author is on a winning streak.

I enjoyed coming back to the town of Haven Hart! Not only do we have a new pairing that are definitely likeable, but we also get to see characters from book one as well, which I absolutely adore. The way Teddy and Riordan meet is quite different and fascinating! They are very much a meeting of two very different worlds and directly tackles themes of heart, love, softness in the midst of a life that would appear to have no room for it.

Knowing what I know now about this book, would I still read it if I went back in time?

See below for the four criteria I use to decide whether and when to read a book

CHARACTERS: As a professional hugger, Teddy's character is one that we don't often see in books, although many of his traits are subconsciously given to characters. So it was fascinating to read those traits given to us so blatantly! He's truly someone you would never expect to get caught up in the 'dark' world of crime/murder/assassinations. Riordan's part of the 'dark' network as a professional assassin, but it wasn't a job he set out wanting. Rather he 'stumbled'/was forced into it and that discrepancy has finally caught up with him. His strict moral code kept him from truly integrating all parts of himself, even those he felt ashamed of. The intersection of these two worlds and worldviews is the highlight of this book, in my opinion. Not so much as unexplored territory, but the setting allows us to explore these themes in a brand new way.

PLOT: An action/romance in which the collision of two different worlds leaves us with one part delving into the depths of the human psyche and one part the action and high stakes of underground crime world. Teddy helps people through grief and healing and Riordan's grief has finally caught up with him. As an assassin, it's not expected that he'd have these moments of vulnerability, but watching the journey through healing within this high stakes world of whodunit and danger leaves the pair fighting for their lives and for the relationship they both desperately want to discover together.

EMOTIONAL INTENSITY: There is no good/bad here. Sometimes I just want a low-investment entertainment read whereas other times a high-stakes 'I need a therapist to recover' is what I need.

3:5/medium. While still a light read, there are some truly deep themes occurring in a setting that could consist of several TWs depending on the reader. This one felt deeper to me.

CATHARTIC FULFILLMENT: Is the emotional journey worth it? Do I finish this book feeling that I've crested the wave of the climactic moment and everything has been settled, leaving me settled and fulfilled?

90%. I do with we got to spend more time in the climactic moment and immediate aftermath, but I'm always saying that. They have their HEA and you do feel like they fought for it! And the way they finally get together in the end is truly quite priceless. I utterly adored how new and different some of the 'tropes' were in this book!

This is book 2 and introduces Riordan and Teddy. Riordan is an assassin who has been working for Black for 14 years. When his sister hires a companion for him, he is against it until he meets Teddy. Teddy is a professional hugger and caregiver. As they to know each other better, feelings start to emerge and when Teddy finds out what Riordan does, he was not impressed. When Teddy ends up in the hospital, Riordan, with the help of Black, Mace, Chris and Snow try to figure out what happened. Loved the pacing of this book with action mixed it. Loved it and off to read the next one.

I loved this instalment. The idea of a duster who doesn't know what her brother's stressful job is, hiring him a surprise hugging companion for a month is hilarious.
This is a total grumpy/sunshine match.
    Riordan is a covert assassin.
Teddy hugs people and babies and writes game reviews for a living.
Riordan is annoyed when Teddy enters his life, but somehow, whilst dodging bullets and conspiracies, he falls for tall, cute, curly haired ray of sunshine.
His grand gesture near the end of the book is classic!
So much fun with spice, humour, danger, cameos and romance.

    I loved this!

Teddy is such a ray of light and Riordan has a heart of gold but a job that weighs his soul.
Teddys job is so unique and I love it.
Teddy and Riordan are so precious together, I love every second of it.

There were parts that were funny, there were emotional ones and I also loved seeing more of Chris and Snow.

    The sexy times 🔥🔥🔥

I can’t wait to read the next one!

    Second time but in audio

Simply delightful! I love this series so much. Teddy is definitely a big teddy bear and I just wanna hug him. He goes through a lot because of Riordan and in the end it was all worth it. Riordan was stuck in his lifestyle that he didn’t want but Teddy was his light in the darkness and it was beautiful to see them come together.
Also the narrators did a good job of bringing them to life.
