Humility (Damned Connections Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,284 ratings

Two commitment-phobes. One ridiculous plan. A decision that changes everything…

Riley

If a no-strings hookup is required, then I’m the perfect guy.

When I meet Danny, I can’t believe my luck. A sexy wolf shifter who’s also a fireman? Who runs from relationships just as fast as I do? Sign me up.

The night that follows is one for the history books, and the best part? Neither of us is looking for a repeat.

That doesn’t mean we don’t see each other again. Without even realising it, we become friends. Friends who do everything together.

Everything with Danny is perfect, but when I start to yearn for more from my hookups, I know something needs to change.

So I come up with a plan. A
genius plan. I sign up for an app that arranges anonymous encounters. No names. No faces shown.

No danger of pesky feelings getting involved.

What could possibly go wrong?

Danny

Unlike Riley, my desire to avoid a relationship has nothing to do with commitment issues.

Taking a mate would mean returning to the clan who betrayed me. I’d have to leave behind this life I’ve built, a life I’m very happy with. One where Riley occupies most of my free time.

Everything is going swimmingly until Riley tells me his plan. His
genius plan, he calls it. He can’t see it for what it is—an idiotic idea that’ll land him in danger.

I can’t let him go through with it. My wolf won’t allow it. Problem is, Riley’s as stubborn as they come. Once he’s decided on something, there’s no changing his mind.

Not wanting him in danger, I realise there’s only one thing I can do. One thing that’ll keep Riley happy while also keeping him safe.

I can be his anonymous hookup.

It’s idiot-proof. At least, it would be, if I wasn’t an idiot.

Turns out Riley isn’t the only one who should be scared of hooking up and realising you want more.

Humility
is the thrilling fourth instalment in the Damned Connections series and can be read as a standalone. Featuring a wolf shifter x human pairing, this spicy MM PNR romance will make you laugh and cry. Each book follows a different couple with a guaranteed HEA.

Emotional, friends to lovers wolf shifter/human romance!
"If there was such a thing as a platonic soulmate, then that’s what Danny was for me. I had no desire to change anything about my life." Danny's a wolf shifter firefighter who's determined to never let anyone in. But he finds his match in Riley, and soon these two are attached at the hip. And though it's obvious to everyone but them, their feelings are anything but platonic. After years of video games and double dates, Danny's wolf starts to nudge him towards more and once that feeling is out of the box, nothing's going to put it back in. "Riley had become my anchor. Losing him wouldn’t untether me. It would drown me." I've been waiting for Danny's book since he was first introduced and it did not disappoint at all. Lark Taylor knows how to wring out all the emotions from her readers and I cried so much because Danny's story was so much more heartbreaking than I would've ever expected. And Riley has his own emotional trauma to deal with too. Seriously, these two have been through so much and I'm so glad they have each other now. Their love is so pure and bright and I love everything about them. I didn't think anything could come close to my love for Ferry and Leo, but Humility is right up there with Patience. "Danny had been my favourite person in the world since I’d first met him. Getting his undivided attention was what I imagined Heaven to feel like." Friends to lovers has never been my favorite because there's always a point where I get so frustrated that I just want to lock the characters together in a room so they can just talk things out. But I never felt that way with Danny and Riley. Even when they were being oblivious idiots or avoiding their feelings, the love and care they had for each other was so obvious. Even when they were hurt by or mad at the other, they're right by their side helping them deal with all the bad things that life throws at them. "It was me and Riley against the world. The way it was always supposed to be. The way I’d wanted it to be since the night we’d met." And their were quite a few bad things to deal with. Danny's past comes back to haunt them which leads to some heart pounding action and puts them in some life threatening danger. But it also introduces us to some amazing characters who I can't wait to read more about. Logan is already a favorite and I can just feel how angsty and emotionally damaging Finn's book is going to be. But I can't wait to read them. And until then, you should pick up this wolf/human, chosen mates romance and fall in love with Danny, Riley and their whole family of supes!

The last book of the series. So bittersweet. But man, what a perfect ending it was! We met Danny and Riley in the previous books in the series. Danny is Leo's best friend and a wolf shifter, and Riley is Matty's best friend and human. Riley doesn't know about anything supernatural or that the new group of friends he's come to be a part of has several members that are supernatural. But on Matty's birthday, they decide to let him in on the secret and use Danny's ability to shift to get him to believe them. And believe them he does. He isn't scared, just shocked, and still very much has his eyes on Danny. But only for one night as he's a pretty big commitment phob and Danny refuses to take a mate or have a relationship because it would make him have to return back to a dark place he walked away from and swore he wouldn't go back to. The two hit it off even after their one night stand, and they became best friends and have stayed that way for 5 years. Everyone can see that there's so much more there, but Danny and Riley are strong in their denial. But when things start to change for Danny and Riley finds out, after a stupid solution to having hook ups with no feelings, their friendship becomes strained as Riley refuses to even think about being with anyone but also doesn't want to hurt the man who has been his best friend and person for years. Then tragedy strikes and descions are made that would change their lives forever. I don't want to spoil too much, so that's all I'll write, but man, this book made me cry. Not just the fact that both men were hurting because feelings and fear together are hard to overcome but for the reason why they feel the way they do about relationships. Danny eventually gets there, but Riley takes a good while. Until about 72% of the story, actually. There were times I was SO frustrated with Riley for being so stubborn and hurting Danny, but I can definitely understand his fear that he had ingrained in his head since he was young. He saw and went through things a young boy never should but he does get there because in the end he knows Danny is the only right choice and his love for him goes beyond any fear he could have. Now, when I read what Danny went through, it nearly broke me. Reading the devastation he experienced is enough to scar the soul. Yet with Riley, he was able to hope again and experience a love he thought he'd never have again. These two were banterful, tender, and sexy as hell, and their love for each other was beautiful and definitely made the book and their journey so worth it. I'm sad to see the series end, but Lark isn't done with this world as she has 2 spin-off series in the works revolving around this world, and I'm so excited for more!

It was just too long for me. Riley took way too many chapters to develop. The time jumps were a lot. I’m sure it was definitely for other people. I think the quality of LT’s writing and intricacy of story telling was still present it was just a slog for me personally.

I have been waiting for Danny’s book as soon as I finished reading Patience, I was just convinced that he would be a wonderful mate and I wasn’t disappointed. I’m even proud to say that when Lark first announced that Danny would have a book I guessed his mate, Riley sounded to be made for him. They were just so similar in certain ways, perfect for each other and what a rollercoaster of emotion obviously like always !!

Riley and Danny are best buddies, they’re like a platonic married couple, doing so many things together, relying on each other. Until one fateful night when things start to change, following this Riley decides to have the best idea ever which puts Danny in a weird position and makes him react with another best idea to protect Riley from himself - and what a fiasco that was.

I loved every word, every page, Lark Taylor has this way with words, I think I could read whatever she writes, I’ve never been so many times on the bridge of crying. Her plume is so full of emotion, that you can feel the pain, the happiness, the relentless, everything that the characters are feeling.

Sooo do not hesitate to read this beautiful love story between two best friends who finally realised what their bond was.

There is a lot going on in this book, both MC’s have past trauma to overcome and it takes time and a large portion of this book for them to realize that they love each other as more than best friends. There is drama, some bad guys, new friends and old and of course and HEA. Other characters from the related series and previous books in this one make appearances and you will have a much better understanding of the friend group if you have read them. Every related book is awesome so don’t miss out. I look forward to any future related books.

Reviewed in Germany on August 2, 2024
Humility is the first PNR story in a long time that has piqued my interest. Lark Taylor's world is very intriguing and there are many compelling characters. This book is about the wolf shifter Danny and Riley, his "princess".
I love the story of how two notorious singles who are completely against relationships develop a deep friendship after a one night stand. I loved the way Lark Taylor convincingly explains why they are so afraid of commitment in a relationship.
The book is exciting and compelling. I just wish I had read the previous books in the series first to avoid spoilers. The book can be read as a stand alone, but for me the other characters are so intriguing that I have to read their stories as well and I will definitely devour each book that follows.

    Highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Commitment? Pish! Who needs commitment? Hmm. Danny and Riley. That’s who.

    5 stars.

Another great story with some heart wrenching moments but with a perfect happy ending.

Danny and Riley are meant for each other, of course they are, being as they’ve been such close friends for years, neither of them realising just how close they are. But with both of them having experienced deep hurt regarding loving relationships, neither one can see them ever falling in love and being committed to one person. Silly boys!

I loved Danny and Riley and the path they take to find their happy ever after. I was very amused about Riley’s solution to him still receiving his core emotional needs and how that idea just fell apart - thanks to Danny’s solution to protect Riley. But for everything that happens, it only draws them closer to realising that they are meant to be together - that they are truly mates. It just takes Riley a little longer to understand that.

Danny’s story is quite heartbreaking, and I fully understood why he wanted to protect his heart.

This is a lovely story about two men finding love, having wonderful friends who would do anything for them and having a future that will be joyous.

Now, I really would love to see if Finn, Calan and Logan, the three brothers, childhood friends of Danny and who have been taking care of Danny’s pack in his absence, will find their mates. They’re good people so they deserve their HEA too.
