About the author

Wilkie Martin is a bestselling comedy and cozy mystery writer. He lives in the Cotswolds, UK with his partner in a town remarkably similar to the fictional Sorenchester of his unhuman series, although he has never come across a policeman there like Inspector Hobbes.
He loves cooking, especially curries which is why his characters tend to like things spicy and despite living as far away from the coast as is possible in the UK, he is a qualified scuba diving instructor.
Wilkie's latest book is a comedy crime fantasy story - Inspector Hobbes and the Common People.
There are now 5 books in his unhuman series of comedy cozy mystery fantasy novels, described by Cotswold Life magazine as 'odd, inventive and genuinely very funny indeed':
I - Inspector Hobbes and the Blood
II - Inspector Hobbes and the Curse
III - Inspector Hobbes and the Gold Diggers
IV - Inspector Hobbes and the Bones
V - Inspector Hobbes and the Common People
They can be read standalone but are best read in order. They are available on kindle, paperback, large print paperback, hardback and audiobooks.
Find the first 3 unhuman books together in his ebook bundle - First Ever Unhuman Bundle.
Find the first 4 unhuman books in the Hobbes omnibus (paperback, hardback and audiobook).
He also has a fantasy thriller - Razor
an a little book of silly verse - Relative Disasters - that chronicles the various humorous but fatal mishaps that happen to family members.
Children's books are written as Wilkie J. Martin, and a cookbook as his character A.C. Caplet.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2019I've read all of this series thus far. Though I, at times, find Andy's denseness to be a bit annoying at times the other characters more than make up for it. The characters are quaint and endearing. The storyline sometimes slows just a bit in the middle but soon picks up and moves along so that at the end your sorry that it's over and one is more the sorry for it. There are corny jokes, funny situations, puns that make one roll their eyes, and stories that involve a town and surrounding areas that move one to want to consider a bit of a visit there. I do hope this author keeps producing Det. Hobbes books.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2017This book is like a warm cocoa after tiring day. It is a cozy mystery involving not human creatures. Some of them are a tad repulsive at first glance but, despite it being a murder mystery, there is not a graphic gore. The book is funny but it also has a smart (and logical) murder plot. I liked all characters; nonhuman inspector Hobbes, his housekeeper, his clumsy (and very human) sidekick Andy and everybody else, including dogs. If you like cozy mysteries with a touch of magic and a lot of humor and need a break from everything serious go for it.
This was new author for me and I started from book #4 in this series because it popped up somewhere on my computer, it looked good and it was just $ 0.99. But I am already half way through book #1 and it is as good as #4. I think that I like it even more because I already read #4 and some characters are familiar. One can read these books out of order and still have fun.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2023Hilarious turns of phrase is a hallmark of the author, in part a British talent in general at least to my U.S. ears. I've started jotting them down. I'm glad for the unfolding reveals about the unhuman and uncanny. Maybe a reader new to series could pick up this 3rd volume before the previous two, but you'd miss out on a lot of good stuff. Meanwhile I have the next 2 on the top of my tbr pile.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2017This the latest book in the "unhuman" series by Wilkie Martin is every bit the pure delight of its predecessors! Andy as always humbled along getting into mischief while his recently acquired wife is off out of town! A mishap puts him back under the good Inspectors roof and with the aid of all the lovable and eccentric characters in this series they somehow manage to get to the bottom of things! These a bit odd British cozys set in the Cotswolds are second to none and a pure delight for readers of any age or gender...in fact it's been a good many years since I have enjoyed a series more! The last possibly being Alan Bradley's Flavia DeLuce series. That said...Wilkie Martin has with this Inspector Hobbs series an equally delightful mystery series with memorable and loveable albeit eccentric characters! I can't wait for the next one...and have heard Wilkie has one in the works...meanwhile I highly recommend these for hours of delightful reading!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2019This is a supernatural book with a really good police officer, Inspector Hobbes, as well as an accident prone human, Mr. Andy Caplet. Andy gets in trouble making Hobbes and his dog, Dregs, save him. Andy stays with Hobbes after his house had been destroyed. Andy loves the cooking of Mrs. Goodfellow, the woman who takes care of them all. She is also not a human. Andy is learning to be strong and to save lives. He is also working to helps Hobbes solve crimes. There is a lot of action in this book and a lot of humor.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2018.... and will now give my take on the entire series. VERY entertaining! Although Andy can get a bit exasperating with his clumsiness and thick - headedness, he does have a certain charm and is our window into the world of the UnHumans.
Inventive, funny, punny, and by the time I've finished a few chapters, I'm invariably famished! You'll see why, if you go ahead and read these stories. Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2018i was worried when i finished reading the third book in the series that i would have to move along in my reading, then i found out that there was another book ! it is great. a quick read with believable characters, including some of my favorites from the previous novels. and the dog, too !
if you enjoyed the first three, you will enjoy this one too. and if you haven’t read the first three, hurry up and get cracking ! if you read the first three and didn’t like them, well, go ahead and read his one, too. it can’t be worse the the others, can it ?

- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2019Usually I read regular mysteries and police stories, but this is just too good to pass on ! I have read all 4 and love the laid back style of these novels. May be other people find them too long threaded, but that is what I like. I cannot stand writers who hurry over everything. As usual, the narrator, Andy, gets himself in all kind of problems, and the world of unhumans expends with yet another being. Waiting for the next installment. These are indeed LOL books ! Great job !
No grammatical errors, lovely word choice, so much more to enjoy than the regular vocabulary. Thanks !

5.0 out of 5 stars Another cracking read!
Andy's life has changed - he's married, has a job and, finally, some money! He's happy and settled.
A violent storm leaves him homeless while his wife is in Egypt and Andy moves in temporarily with Hobbes, Mrs G and Dregs. Immediately Andy and Hobbes get involved in a series of apparently random events. But are they?
Another hugely enjoyable read, a complex and engaging plot packed with incredible characters and lots of humour.

Great book well worth the read. I hope to learn more about Andy, who it seems is hiding some kind of hidden talent!, all the other characters as well.
Thank you

5.0 out of 5 stars A marvellous find
A fabulous series; funny, quirky, endearing and engaging. The author writes with humour, compassion and a great sense of story and character. Great anti hero - Andy, fumbling, bumbling and a refreshing change from cliche. I loved gentleman Inspector Hobbes and a housekeeper who gives martial arts because people confuse the word with marital.

Mi sono divertita nel leggere un giallo simpatico e diverso dai soliti e ho comprata l'intera serie. La consiglio per le lunghe sere invernali avvolti nel plaid e con una tisana calda tra le mani.
