I Need You: Riverside Town, Book 1 Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 137 ratings

Losing a loved one can change a person, their outlook on life and their reason for being… Dane and Noah go through those changes together. Neither of them encouraged or expected what their future would bring, but they don’t regret their new normal.

When Dane’s girlfriend, Maranda, became pregnant during their summer break before starting college, Dane did what he felt any man should do in that situation, he gained a respectable job as a firefighter to provide for his girlfriend and their daughter, Sydney; he became dependable, not needing to rely on his parents or anyone else for help.

After disowning his parents for their choice of disowning his gay, older brother, Noah’s life was blissfully simple. He was the manager of a hotel, and engaged to his best friend, Sydney, Dane’s daughter. As long as he had a good book to read, he was happy.

Life for Dane and Noah was set in stone; they knew who they were, who they loved, and where their lives were going. However, when tragedy strikes, their lives are upended and they have no one left…except each other.

I Need You is the first book from debuting author Darla O’Malley.

Author Note: male/male romance, gay for you, can be read as a standalone. Contains sexual acts between consenting adults, strong language, light daddy kink, light dubious consent.

Darla O’Malley had been writing male/male fiction and paranormal stories as a hobby for quite a few years, until encouragement from friends and family to become a published author had her finishing one of her many half-written novels. She’s extremely happy she heeded their advice as having others read her creations has become an exhilarating experience.

The emotions were palpable

The emotions were palpable
The strong—and well written—emotional journeys of the characters were what hooked me into this story from the start. This first book in their debut series; Riverside Town by Darla O’Malley, is an excellent start for a new author. This Love-After-Loss, Age Gap romance really hits it where it hurts most with every step of their grief and shows that True Love can be where you least expect it. I adored this story! O’Malley has a talent with playing with their readers emotions. All the story elements, vivd language and dialogue transported me into the story. I felt so connected to the characters. Age gap romance with a “taboo” pairing has never felt both so dirty and bad but also so perfect. I’ve never actually read a book with this relational Dynamic before. I was blown away with how well it worked. Truthfully I read AND listened to the audiobook from Audible. The audiobook was alright, it wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t excellent. He was clear and concise but it wasn’t always easy to tell who was speaking so I found myself reading along with the audiobook. I like to listen when I do other stuff like laundry so this wasn’t ideal. I’d give the narrator another chance though.

Noah and Dane do not have an easy time of things. Both lost in their grief, they take comfort in each other’s company until that starts to turn into something more. It was a good book and I will probably read the rest of this series. These characters got to me. No one gets to dictate how people should behave or grieve. The only ones that matter are the two involved. They both broke my heart but it got put back together by the end!

This is a new to me author. I really enjoyed this story. Dane and Noah are drawn to each other as if that's the way it was meant. The heartbreak they experience is tragic but the way they support each other is awesome. It's definitely a slow burn. You feel the push and pull with every word. I can't wait to see if anything happens for Mark!!

Very rarely does one find a first time author who has put all the elements together to make it a first class read. Excellent story, great characters, and a writing style that flows beautifully. Darla O’Malley is on her way! Looking forward to her next one.

This is a new series by a new to me author, and she said forget about speed bumps(haha). It has a good storyline with interesting characters and a great ending. Can’t wait to start the next book.

I liked the characters and the emotions in this story. I didn’t have trouble separating the characters “voices” and I think the pacing was well done. The relationship dynamic towards the end and the creepy coworker plot felt somewhat forced. I’m not a fan of D/s without the all important limits conversation, even when both characters have no experience with bdsm. I felt like they went from 0 to 100 and forgot to talk.

Dane and Noah relationship develops slowly after suffering a great loss. The comfort they provide each other to ease the pain is so full of love. It simply flows off the pages. When they actually realize what they're feeling they are quick to accept it but not before dealing with some self-doubts. It isn't glossed over, the writer does a great job of leading you through the growth of their relationship. This a new to me author and I'm glad I took the chance. Can't wait to know more about the rest of the characters which you also get to love

This was way beyond what I was expecting. It has a lot of depth and plot. Yes is has steam but it goes way beyond that. The tragedy they work through to find happiness with each other is beautiful. I can say enough good about this.

After a great loss Dane and Noah realize there is something more between them than friendship. The story develops slowly. It's so sweet. I'm happy, they find their HEA. I recommend this book.

I read this after reading book 3 and needing to start at the beginning because it was soooo good. The writing is fantastic, well edited and the storyline i great from start to finish with a wonderful HEA. The only thing that wasnt to my liking, and it’s personal taking nothing from the book because I would read it again, is that it was such a slow burn. It was over 50% before they even realised they were having feelings for each other. Everything at the start was needed for the story however so it wasn’t like there was a bunch of unnecessary stuff added just to bulk out the book.

This book left me tingling with happy feelings. Straight to gay minus the angst and multiply the intense love scenes. So hot! So many emotions! Like a puzzle where all the pieces fit perfectly.

My only bit of sadness comes from the newness of the author. Darla O’Malley hasn’t released many books yet. It won’t be long before I’ve read all her published works. If only books were like concerts. Then I could clap and cheer in hopes of an encore.

Enjoyable enough tale, even if the premise gave me pause. The leads mesh well and the story flows well enough.
