"It's by no means a hearts and flowers romance, yet you can feel that unbreakable thread that connects these two damaged souls."

- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2021Format: KindleVerified Purchase"“Hark what light through yonder window breaks.” I struck what I judged to be a dramatic Shakespearian pose and Red laughed at me and threw the dish cloth at my face."
I found it interesting that Author Silverwood included a Romeo & Juliet quote so close to the end of the book. And it got me thinking, and pondering, and going down the rabbit hole that I call "What does it all mean?" I can't help but see comparisons between the doomed couple and our Isak & Red. Greek philosopher Aristotle describes a tragic hero has essentially having good and evil, of noble descent and should suffer greatly. But these are modern times, and they call for a more modern interpretation of tragic hero. The biggest thing even playwrights of this millennium agree on is tragedy and suffering is subjective. So could it be that Isak suffered so much in his early years that he has morphed into this conflicted man? A mesmer who takes what he thinks he deserves because he's earned the right? We learn that he was to get married at some point way before Red, but it didn't occur. We don't know why, but... Could it have been the catalyst to his tragedy arc? His mesmer powers? And in contrast, could it have been love that switches his arc from evil to good? Hmmmm.
"She was, I realized, definitely an essential part of my world. Didn’t know why. Currently, I did not care. The anger still swirled and possessed me. How dare he touch her, let alone have his men do it."
Isak makes great strides in wanting MORE. But why? Why then? I don't believe its just his encounter with another mesmer that made him more thoughtful. It seems like boredom played a part, but I couldn't help but keep thinking about why then. Why decide it was time to test the monster? Perhaps we will never know.
"As pure mesmer, the world was dull and simple. Seen through the eyes of my monster, the nuances and excitement of living was crushed. I had taken Red and used her like a toilet roll to assuage desires, then thrown her away until I wanted her again. A human man was more than lust. Should be more."
For me, Isak is pure tragic hero, but I don't think Author Silverwood made it so easy. He starts to think about consent, but we discover something else. Is it possible that Red has changed too? One can argue Pavlov's effect or Stockholm Syndrome here, but Red is a tragic hero too. She wants to do what she thinks she should: Run away from him whenever possible. And she tries. But it doesn't seem like its what she wants anymore. She's made a conscious decision to help him find his human again...his good. And the dark humor Author Silverwood is known for comes out to play.
"“We need to tack an extra bit on that list I gave you at the café: Seven: Do not murder people.”“Gotcha. Next time, Red. Next time.”"
"“Red, we are the least likely couple to be given a Great Pet Owner award.”“This is true,” she said reluctantly, as if straining the words through her heart. “He is super cute, though. But you…” She eyed me. “Best Serial-killer Award, maybe?”"
"Your toddler took his first steps today? Well, my evil @#$% monster guy made a &%$ joke. Beat that."
At some point, Red became so important to Isak that he would do anything to save her and keep her, and Red realizes that she wasn't leaving Isak. I loved how Author Silverwood described Isak's rage at the possibility of losing her.
"Hate thrived, rose in me to heights I had never felt before. I dug the hate from my bones, tasted it on my tongue, and reveled in this raw power. The hate oozed and flooded my head, thumping, thumping. My mesmer senses leaped and curled, wriggled dark tendrils, and I freed them and whipped downward through the tower, questing."
Im going to argue that Isak does come full circle as the tragic hero. He's found a new purpose, a new love and a new respect for Red...or is it simply for the word Consent? I don't think it matters really.
The Eddie Izzard mention is as random as it is profound. "What do you do in life? What do you create, what do you make, what do you add to the human existence? That is what matters." Have these two tragic heroes found peace in the mundane? That and a little side BDSM is really all you need to complete life.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2021The story was engaging until a terrible thing happened to the heroine that can't be undone or fixed, and it made me skim quickly to the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2021Format: KindleVerified Purchase"What do you add to the human experience?" This line from the story, which is further referenced in a book Isak was reading by Eddie Izard, stuck with me. When the story picks up about a year after the events of Used, Isak is dissatisfied with his life. He has Red and she has been his toy as he travels all over the world in search of satisfaction/depravity. As his reputation precedes him, there are others who would like to take advantage of his abilities over women. This leads to problems for both he and Red. When he was approached at the beginning about the possibility that his skills could be used for human trafficking, I worried. I think the old Isak would have been on board with this plan. The difference now is that he recognizes the joy/pleasure he seeks is missing and that is the only reason he doesn't go along with the men who want his skills.
This book really delves into the evolution of Isak. Red is his compass point and the one thing that may help him balance the need of his mesmer side and the side that recognizes he needs to be more human. Even though he is trying to change, he still does some questionable, albeit kinky, things to Red. We see his evolution as the story progresses. Near the end he sends his mesmer tentacles (yep, Cari found a way to get tentacles in the story) out to draw his victims to him. Only this time he is trying to save Red from further harm. His motives behind controlling the nearby women, as appalling and frightening as Red finds it, is less self-serving than in the past. It was at this point I knew the changes in Isak were genuine.
As for Red, this poor woman! She has been a puppet to Isak for more than a year. Early in the book we start so see her coming back to herself. "Slowly, ever so slowly, I became aware of my existence, of being a real person, of being... me." This sentence filled me with dread. To be so disconnected from your own existence, for so long, how would you react? Isak hasn't wiped her memory so she starts to remember everything that was done to her. How do you move on from that? I felt bad for Red in Used when Isak told her to forget her name. As her memories flood back she remembers he told her to forget her name. I really wanted her to ask him what her name is, but she is still afraid of him. Red is a strong character and she has a strong will to get away from Isak, but alas that is not to be. He has done so many terrible things to her, yet she is willing to help him change.
Overall, I really loved this story. I am glad we finally got Isak and Red's story. I enjoyed the ending and was happy that Isak did not become totally domesticated and that Red and he got their HEA together.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI'm not always a fan of happy endings. I'm not gonna lie. I enjoy the not so happy ever after, especially the dark ones. But, I have to say, I wasn't at all upset by this happy ending.
I loved Red and Isak ever since reading about them in Used and I was excited to get more of them. Cari Silverwood did not let me down. This book is everything I have come to expect from her dark romances.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHmmm i don't whether to like it or hate it. I am glad i read both books to see how it ended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant shade of dark romance
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFor those that don’t know, this is the conclusion to the story that began in Used, the book that made suitcases a trigger for me. Whilst this can read standalone, reading it definitely works so much better if you read Used first, imparting a clearer understanding of what went before. There are also references to what (I believe) was a fairly brief scene in Wolfe, but you definitely don’t need to have read that one to follow the plot of this.
Mesmers are men infected by a virus allowing him the ability to control the minds of susceptible women. It also brings out – enhances? - any darkness that resides in his soul, and boy does Isak have an abundance of that. I absolutely hated him by the end of Used, though thankfully he does travel the path to redemption in ISAK & Red. At the start of the book he is still very much a monster, a man with no redeeming features at all. Even his obsession for Red is riddled with evil, with him not truly caring about her welfare at all.
As the story progresses circumstances, and a concussion, bring Isak to a new awareness. A new consciousness and conscience - almost. Despite having free reign, the monster in him remains unsatisfied, feels discontent. The world is boring, bland, colourless, an amorphous blur even when he lets his most base, most deviant, most perverted desires run free. So Isak embarks on a journey to regain (some of) his humanity, but it’s a path littered with pain, fear and whippings, well it is if your name happens to be Red.
As some of the old –the real? – Isak emerges, Red finds herself starting to like him. And therein lies a conundrum, after everything he has made her endure - the suffering, the humiliation, the degradation - how can she ever forgive and forget? The scorching hot, kinky sex and mind-blowing orgasms go some way to persuading her, but even that isn’t quite enough to do the job. Red miscalculated in the past, she seriously underestimated the threat Isak posed to her very sanity and wellbeing. Thankfully this is a girl who has learnt from her mistakes, but untangling herself from the web she is caught in will not be easy.
I found myself as easily captured by this story as a woman entranced by a Mesmer. I didn't want to put it down, mesmerised by the writing and curious as to what would happen next. And I wasn’t ever disappointed. We are given adventure, action, sex, kink and a bad, bad man who is so very good at certain things. Plus a pretty awesome heroine too. For those who don't mind darker themes in there stories and kink, this is a great story.
