- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2019Chief Thief Catcher Ned Spinks, along with his rag-tag band of mostly-supernatural fellow Thief Catchers, have been tasked by the fey community with catching the most dangerous thief of all: a stealer of life.
The murderer has been targeting communities of supernatural creatures one by one, from the brownies to the dryads to the mer folk, and each victim has been killed in the most insulting way possible for their race. The murdered gingerbread man was dunked in milk. The naiad (water nymph) was left on dry land. And the deceased brownie, a race that’s fond of cake and notoriously intolerant of vegetables, was left in a salad bowl. Curiously, the only thing the survivors can seem to agree on is the existence of a suspicious mustache.
This is the setup for one of the most hilarious fantasy mysteries I’ve read in a very long time.
While The Interspecies Poker Tournament has its grim moments, it’s tame enough (and fast paced enough) for kids to enjoy. The author’s writing style is smooth and easy to follow, and the characters’ accents (particularly that of Jenni, Ned’s assistant and the wayward princess of the fey,) are a delight to read.
There are plenty of fascinating details built into this story, giving it an edge of realism. These are not Disney-esque fairytale creatures. (The carnivorous, predatory mer folk are the best take on these enchanting mythical creatures I’ve ever encountered.)
If I had to voice any criticism of Poker Tournament, it would be that it felt like it ended too soon. I also would have liked more depth to the mystery and a longer build-up to the discovery of the murderer’s identity and their eventual capture– but I think that’s more of a result of the kind of crime fiction I usually read than a reflection on this story.
This is an excellent read, especially for younger readers or those who prefer their fantasy mysteries a lot less grim and gritty. The Interspecies Poker Tournament gets an enthusiastic recommendation from me.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2019The fae in Roshaven are in a flush of panic. Someone is killing fae, and the culprit is playing a very clever bluff. The stakes get higher with the revelation of each new murder while Ned Spinks and his team of Thief Catchers struggle to understand exactly kind of trickster they're dealing with.
So, how exactly does one identify and catch a fae serial killer? This is the question confronting Ned Spinks - and his assistant, Jenni, has her poker face on.
’The Interspecies Poker Tournament’ is a wonderfully quirky fantasy story, full of rich and diverse characters that all have their own priorities and vested interests in catching the murderer. It’s written with humour and warmth that infuse the story with a genuine feel-good tone, despite the multiple deaths, general trickery and deliberate obfuscation by some, and the presence of some rather sinister characters.
This novella-length book can easily be read in a couple of hours, and would best suit a YA-and-older audience. I found it to be a great diversion on a quiet afternoon, and thoroughly enjoyed the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2020Another fun read about thief-catcher Ned Spinks and his assistant Jenni the sprite. This time, they’re after a mustachioed shape-shifter who take the form of each kind of fae creature before he kills one of them. Jenni’s loyalty is torn between Ned and Momma K, the highest authority of all the fae, who has tasked her with finding the murderer. We learn more about each of the fae communities along the way, and a get a quick lesson on Texas Hold’em. If you’re looking for a quick and delightful read, this is the book for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2019Once again crime rears its ugly head in Roshaven, and thief-catchers Ned Spinks and Jenni must try and stop a killer who has targeted the different fae communities. The only distinguishing mark is that all the apparent killers sport a mustache. Ned must try and figure out who is killing the fae before Momma K decides to act and institute her own brand of fae justice. And it turns out that the best way to capture a murderer may be to hold a…poker tournament?
The Interspecies Poker Tournament is the second Roshaven novel, and I am ashamed to say, it is my first one – and that’s a problem I plan to correct as soon as I can. I thoroughly loved this novel, the characters, and the over-the-top story. Claire Buss has created a wonderful set of characters in Ned and Jenni. Ned and Jenni are not your typical buddy cop combination, but Ned’s determination and perseverance to solve the crime and Jenni’s magic, nonchalance, and don’t give a….attitude makes for a fun, and laugh-out-loud duo. In this book Jenni is keeping a few things from Ned, and this creates a tension that continually adds to the action. Then there is the poker tournament at the end, which is a unique way to lure a killer.
The Interspecies Poker Tournament delivers on all points. I couldn’t put the book down and loved the characters. I laughed out loud so many times that I know that I got some strange looks from the people around me. Claire’s writing evokes feelings of the writing of Pratchett and Adams, and I highly recommend this book for anybody looking for a bit of humorous fantasy.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2019This book is so much fun! I loved every bit of it. I read and enjoyed The Rose Thief when it released, and I've been craving more from that universe ever since. Finally, I've been appeased! Author Claire Buss has the kind of whimsical creativity I have rarely found in others, and it is a joy to read her work.
The story begins when Chief Thief catcher Ned Sparks and his sidekick Jenni the sprite get a new case. Someone is killing the fae in Roshaven, and Jenni know's something she's not telling Ned. But why?
Like I'm going to tell you! Read it and find out! :)
The Interspecies Poker Tournament is a great read for all ages. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun ride
The Interspecies Poker Tournament gives us another madly inconsequential Roshaven story.
Ned Spinks has a new case, but his sidekick Jenni isn’t necessarily playing on his team Claire Buss is a mistress of humour, but she doesn’t make the mistake of offering us unadulterated cheer and there are moments of real pathos which ensure that the story pulls you in and takes you along on a crazy road trip.
The wonderful thing about this book is the ensemble, the gingerbread men, the odd octopus, Roshaven itself.
I was sorry to find myself less in love with Jenni and Ned this time, but it’s still an unhesitatingly five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars refreshing read
Few books,or TV now, have such a sense of FUN!
If you need to step aside? Read this.
A Fantasy with characters, story line and a 'P' take look on the world that only Pratchett could better!
Add on...Long after I read it the 1st time and after after recently reading Terry Pratchett's autobiography(Recommend) .I picked it out of my bookcase and read again.Glad I did.
Only one word to describe it.. FUN!

5.0 out of 5 stars Short book, good book, needed more book.
My sole complaint is that it's a novella. There are some wonderful details to the worldbuilding that beg for far more words to properly explore. Roshaven and its denizens deserve more and bigger books.
Fans of whimsical Fantasy and light-hearted wit will really enjoy this and the rest of the author's work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grear Fantasy Fun Read.
Having read The Rose Thief I was excited to see what Claires wonderfully created fantasy characters were getting up to next in the brilliantly imagined town Roshaven. I loved the dynamics of how different species and their environments meet. I hope Ned & Spinks have more cases to read in future. My teenage bookworm daughter love it to.

5.0 out of 5 stars A funny delight topping a cake of majestic worldbuilding.
I adore this book! It's funny and completely engaging. I love the language play. Most of all I love the characters. Brilliant! Jenni is not only my favourite character in this book but the loveliest character I've read in any book for many months. She's a delight.
