About the author

I was born in the 1980s in Yorkshire and live in Essex, where I belong to a small pride of cats. I have a second cousin who made the Guinness Book of Records for brewing the world's strongest beer, and I once ran over myself with a Segway scooter. These two things are in no way related. I've worked in an airport, a lab, and various shops, but much prefer writing because me and mornings are definitely not the best of friends.
I sold my first book in 2005 and since then have published many award-winning paranormal and contemporary romances and light-hearted mysteries, including the popular Sophie Green series. My sci-fi action romance Max Seventeen won the Paranormal Romantic Novel of the Year from the Romantic Novelists Association in 2017. Under the pen name Cat Marsters I also had a successful career in erotic romance, winning an Epic award in 2010.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2024This is one of my favorite romance novels I have ever read. Honestly, this book was one of my gateway books into the genre as a whole when I was in high school. I just finished reading the updated version, but this story and the sequels has literally been stuck in my mind since the first time I read it in 2010. Not exaggerating either. I’m so happy I finally found this one again after the cover change. If you’re on the fence, it’s worth it. The banter is fantastic- like seriously fantastic. The premise is cool. Sophie is a really lovable main character. I love the personality that Kate Johnson puts into her characters- especially the main characters Luke and Sophie. The side cast also has some stand outs that also get developed throughout the next few books. Overall the cast of characters makes this story lovely. This series is hilarious and totally worth the read. Highly, highly, highly recommend reading this if you like rom-coms and value excellent banter.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2011I love Meg Cabot and am always looking for similar authors who can get across that sense of enjoyment while still having a good storyline, so Kate Johnson's book "I, Spy" was a great find.
Yes, it is light and fluffy. The heroine is gorgeous, the men are all hunks and yes, she must have the most relaxed airline bosses ever. It's chick lit in a really good way.
This is the kind of book that you can settle into on your morning commute without any worry over complex plots. If, like me, you're not really that awake in the morning, this is perfect start-of-day reading. And it's pretty enjoyable on the way home too.
A blonde spy with a Buffy obsession and plenty of gumption, Sophie makes her way in a Lara Croft style Landrover Defender, defying the expectations of those around her that she should be a dumb blonde, driving a sports car. She chases down bad guys, managing to fit in some shopping on route and even manages to lock lips with some hot men. Not content with that she takes the initiative to learn new skills from her colleagues and even manages to cope with severed fingers in her mail. All in a days work for Britain's newest spy.
A very enjoyable read and I look forward to the next one.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2014This book is not bad, story wise, but I can't recommend it to people who aren't very familiar with British English or who are extreme Anglophiles. There are chunks of this book that make no sense otherwise unless you have one of the aforementioned traits or you have many reference sources available, chiefly among them a rhyming slang dictionary, a UK-specific word dictionary, and a UK sports team and player name list. Other than that, this was quite a story. It is light and airy for the most part compared to others in its genre. I wouldn't have expected this book to be sold in this form in the US without quite a bit of Americanization. I mean, they do that with other books and series all the time to make it more readable for different countries. I know this book takes place almost entirely in a small village in England, unless my geography is bad, but the complete and total "Britishness" of it surprised me. I won't bore you with a plot summary as I know other reviewers are fond of doing that. I do, however, appreciate that this book has chapter demarcations. Chapter demarcations make it so much easier to see how close you are to the end of a chapter or to find a stopping place when you need to do so. If you can deal with all the purely British pieces of the book and you like the genre in general, I say you should give this one a shot. Have at it because I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's quite a cute adventure.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2013I downloaded this book as a free read from the kindle store. This is a light mystery with a touch of romance. The story revolves around Sophie, an unintentionally humorous airlines worker who stumbles into being a part of a secret spy organization. She builds a bond with the spy who recruits her, and the bond eventually becomes a romantic one.
The story is amusing in the beginning, but Sophie's actions eventually start to seem a little ignorant and silly. Despite this, the book was an interesting, cozy read that is a good time waster for light mystery fans.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2011Oh how I love you, Sophie Green!
I can totally see the comparisons with Stephanie Plum, a series which I used to be an avid fan of! But to be honest with you, I love Sophie even more! She is just hilarious as hell. In the Stephanie Plum books, Stephanie herself isn't funny, it's her supporting cast that makes the books funny. But with Sophie, she's the main attraction, full of one-liners and asides to the reader that make me laugh out loud. I just adore her. Is the story silly? Sure, but it's fun. I consider reading an escape from reality.
And don't let me forget to mention sexy Luke. I really have no other words than sexy. Sexy sexy sexy. Sophie has her hands full with that one.
Once I finished I, Spy? I immediately picked up books 2-4, the remaining ones in the series. I devoured them all within days. Definitely give Sophie Green a chance. If you love hilarious, snarky, curvy, non-apologetic leading ladies who love food, men and sex as much as you do, check this series out.

5.0 out of 5 stars High flying humour; a great summer read
Sophie works for a budget airline and is a bit bored with her job, having little money, and being harrassed by passengers that think she is a blonde bimbo. She helps stop a criminal - and her life changes when she's invited to join an undercover spy agency. Although very enthusiastic, things don't quite work out as she would want. Unfortunately, she ends up getting too drunk, being sick, and spending her money (and the agency money) on designer labels in Italy when she should be tailing a suspect.
This is a great little story, full of silly scenes, innuendo and a totally British way of being a spy. There were times when it made me laugh out loud, and I really couldn't put it down till I got to the end. It appealed to my slightly warped sense of humour and is the kind of book that just puts a smile on your face. I would definitely get others by this author.
Suitable for most adults, it's the kind of thing that could easily be read on a journey or on the beach. Light, easily read in small chunks or straight through, it's a really great little book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A real fun book, and a nice easy read
Sometimes, you don't want much, just a fun light book, with a fab heroine and a gorgeous couple of heroes. This book was free and I took a gamble, and I am so glad I did, The I Spy? Sophie Green Mysteries deliver this on all counts. I read the book over the weekend, and really enjoyed it, Sophie is a smart sassie heroine who has a habit of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and a gorgeous new boss, called Luke. Along with Macbeth, and Maria, and One, they try to solve the murder of one of Sophie's colleagues, which turns out to be part of a bigger picture. A fun read, which rattles along at good pace. I will be downloading the next few in the series very soon and I am more than happy to pay for them which shows you how good this book actually is.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amüsant

5.0 out of 5 stars Didn't want to stop reading this!
I downloaded this book for my Kindle at a very cheap price and I wasn't expecting much, but I found this really enjoyable and a great read. The main character - Sophie - is very accessible, I can relate to her and the plot was believable and by the time it developed into a touch more fantasy - well I was happy to go along for the ride and it was fun.
I'd definitely recommend this for a fun read during a commute or on a quiet afternoon. It would be perfect to read with a soak in the bath - if only my Kindle was waterproof!
I read this book in a couple of days, downloaded the next one in the series and read that in even less time. Can't wait to read the next two

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent writing
I enjoyed this immensely, particularly on account of Kate Johnson's ability to merge romance, comedy, suspense and mystery. Sophie Green was a likable, if sometimes slightly hapless heroine who I couldn't help rooting for. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants an entertaining, fun and quick read. Perfect for those cold and miserable January days.
