"The perfect blend of soul-crushing angst, laugh out loud wit, and heart-melting romance.” (Helena Hunting, New York Times and USA Today best-selling author)
From number one Amazon best seller L.J. Shen comes a new, star-crossed lovers romance about loss, love, and meeting The One when you are too young to know how to keep them.
Sometimes you meet people who are out of this world, so you make them a part of yours.
A one-night stand born from vengeance in a foreign land.
An explosive chemistry neither of us could deny.
We signed a contract on the back of a Boar’s Head Pub napkin that said if we ever met again, we would drop everything and be together.
Eight years and thousands of miles later, he’s here.
In New York.
And he’s America’s music obsession.
The intangible Irish poet who brings record executives to their knees.
The blizzard in my perfect, unshaken snow globe.
Last time we spoke, he was a beggar with no intention of becoming a king.
But a king he became, and now I’m his servant.
I’m not the same broken princess Malachy Doherty put back together with his callused hands.
I have a career I love.
A boyfriend I adore.
An apartment, a roommate, a life.
I changed. He changed, too.
But Mal kept the napkin.
Question is, will I keep my word?

- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2024I was hooked on this story from the beginning. I'm not new to L.J.Shen's novels. I've read her books before. This is unlike anything I've read by her before...as she states in her personal notes after the epilouge. And boy is it. I loved all of the characters, the storyline, the dialog and even how the chapters are filled with different POV's. Shen takes you on a roller coaster ride of feelings throughout your time reading this story. It's funny, romantic, heartbreaking, thought provoking and even adrenaline inducing at times. It has the the HEA ending and beautiful closure at the end. The kind that satisfies you after you realize there's not a sequel and you're a bit angry and heartbroken because there's not more to read with these lovely cool characters she's brought to life. If you choose to pass on this book It's your loss. But I was able to read this book for free (thanks to my subscription to KU) and have now decided to buy a copy of the real thing because I want to have it in my library to read and re-read again when I want. It's now one if my favorites and so is L.J. Shen.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2019I recently said that Penelope Ward puts me through the wringer, and my Ativan prescription gets a work out reading her books. I am highly dread-filled, a true worrywart, I don’t trust authors to give me HEA even when they promise it.
L.J. Shen nearly crippled me for a good portion of In the Unlikely Event.
Young love is a mixture of hormones and inexperience. I’m old; you will have to take my word for it. Rory Jenkins is full of the dewy awakenings of adulthood, not ready to reconcile the death of the dad she never got to meet or know beyond letters. Fresh from high school graduation, she goes AWOL to Dublin to at least see where her kin live. What she finds is a warning about homicidal gray squirrels, a sexy Boheme poet, and a cold welcome that lets her know that Tolka, Ireland is not for her.
Although she stays in Dublin and Tolka only one day and night, it’s long enough for her to realize that the poet who best knew her father is quickly and infinitely dear to her heart, but doomed to break it. Fate has given her a brief few stolen hours with Malachy Doherty. Upon their farewell, the troubadour, and drinky romantic, pens out a vow that in the unlikely event the two lovers should meet again, they will forego all else and claim one another for a lifetime of sublime moments like those that they discovered in Tolka.
It’s the Rory and Mal pre-marriage-proposal proposal written upon a napkin and signed next to a ketchup stain.
An admission that their youthful love will remain pure and will never dim nor die regardless of distance and time
It’s the promise that L.J. Shen was giving me that everything would be alright if I just hung in there.
But humans, both fictional and in reality, exhaust me, and these two lovers in cahoots with their creator were only issuing me a threat that my soul, heart, and nerves would not survive the wreckage that the plot and narrative would surely serve.
And L.J. Shen wrecked me.
She plays the devil with Rory and Mal’s hearts and lives. It’s Shakespearean in its level of tragedy. The wind up is intense, the transition felt rushed, but the reveals along the way were K.O.s that effed me up once and again.
The POV swaps throughout the book from Mal and Rory so you can see the emotional state of both. The story has cute little vignettes between chapters that are ‘notes’ from other characters to readers, giving us peeks into all the shadows and actors that impact the narrative. Although this unique exposition-packed vehicle of confessions has the potential to blowout the story, it doesn’t — the push and pull between all the characters works. The slow-rolling rediscovery of their metaphysical love opens up the world L.J. Shen builds in In The Unlikely Event.
Bravo! You figuratively kicked my dog into the street and made sure it was only struck by lightning rather than traffic.
Now that is ironic.
I loved this book.
I recommend it.
—and It is an excellent read for anyone who enjoys Penelope Ward too.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2019Fate, Kismet, Inevitable. These are just some of the words that immediately come to my mind when I think of how to describe this fantastic book. Now, this book is a departure from what we have come to expect from L.J. Shen as of late. But, instead is uniquely beautiful all it’s own. So I loved it just as I have loved all of her other writings. Rory and Mal’s story was fun and exciting and flirty and hot. It was also devastating and gut wrenching and angsty and full of redemption and hope.
“You were a beautiful mistake, but that doesn’t mean I don’t regret you.
Aurora”Rory” Belle Jenkins comes to Dublin, Ireland in search of her roots, her history after a death in her family. What she finds is Malachy Doherty, a street musician with enough talent to play his way right into her heart and her panties. They get one night, twenty-four hours. That’s enough for them to form a bond so strong that it seals both of their fates for years to come. So heartfelt promises are made, but will Rory actually have the opportunity to honor those, and what will happen in the unlikely event that it does? Where will she be in her life at that point? How will Rory handle finding out the truth when she discovers that everyone she loves has been keeping secrets from her?
Malachy Doherty is gorgeous and so talented. He falls hard and fast for the beautiful American Rory and after their amazing night together he will do whatever it takes to get her to agree to come back to Ireland and be his forever. He’s that sure she is it for him. So he draws up a contract and swears he will honor it. He kisses her farewell and tries to abide by all the rules but decided he needed to contact her. Malachy and Rory fall victim to lies, manipulations and misunderstandings, someone fecked with their futures (that’s the most I will say #SpoilersSuck) and they have no contact for eight years. They both move on with their lives and LOTS of things change for both of them but especially for Mal.
When the two are reunited for a work project. Years of pent up anger, rage, aggression, sexual tension, hurt and about every emotion you could name is unleashed between these two. Mal is set on revenge and Rory is clueless. And Boy oh boy, with her amazing writing L.J. makes sure you feel every.single.one of those emotions right along with Rory and Mal.
From the second they are around each other, you know it’s gonna be a fight to control the underlying feelings they have for each other with all the other stuff going on around them. That whole thin line between love and hate thing. Everyone else (significant others included ) best get out da way!!
“No matter the casualties or consequences.”
I really loved the uniqueness of having the POV’s from dead characters and inanimate objects, it brought the entire story together and brought it full circle from where it all started to how Rory and Mal ended up where they did. I loved their journey. Now it wasn’t always easy. There was lots of deception and lies and covering up of lies so it created lots of drama for the story which was great.
Rory and Mal we smokin hot together. But they were funny too. I promise you will never look at a chocolate bar 🍫 the same again, or you might find yourself inspired. So I would most definitely recommend you taking a chance on this one. If you are already a L.J. Shen fan or a first timer definitely check this one out because… I give this one five stars ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and chocolate bars 🍫🍫🍫🍫🍫!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wunderschön!!!
Habe das Buch auf Englisch gelesen.
Bisher mein liebstes Buch in diesem Jahr.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best roller-coaster ride
Well, she didn't lied to us when she said this story wasn't her usual. It's not indeed, but this book it's only to prove how good this author is.
I felt liked I've been in a roller coaster by the end of this book, it has all the feelings you need to enjoy it and so much happens through this story that you never get stuck in one page. Somehow she managed to put all this characters, twists and POV's into the same book but you don't feel like it was rushed or without proper character development.
The romance is beautiful and I really laughed with them. Mal is so HOT and sweet at the same time. The kind of men you wished to be your boyfriend. Rory is far from the boring heroines I usually read in other stories, she's fun, intuitive and very realistic. You belive in them right at the beginning.
This is one of those books you won't put down until the end and you're going to wait a few days to star another one just to keep savoring this sweet story. Congratulations Mrs Shen!

5.0 out of 5 stars Magic
Do you believe in destiny? Then read the very well-written story of King Malachy and Princess Aurora, divided by years, countries, families but linked by heart.
